Rnes5: To Trust a Thief. Board NES

ok, here's the deal. MjM and MattyB2's user profiles both say that last time they were online (on CFC) was Feb25 or Feb26, which is almost a month back.

so i'll do both of their orders i guess.
if any of you have sent and/or gotten diplomacy from Britain or Austria, forward them to me. you have 1 day. i'll do the update tommorow (assuming i have a relatively free day at work, which i should).

man, when a righteous rant is not taken seriously by those its aimed at, but is taken seriously by others, you know the world is turned upside down.
anyway, i'll try to actualy get to what i threatened to do as soon as i can.

Update!! Whee!! Hamsters!

MattyB2 has officialy quit. i'm so glad he told me this now and not a month ago
did orders myself for Britain, Rome, Austria, and followed Grubans advice on Germany, but didnt do it well (misread his suggestion), still worked out though.
Rome is dead. Austria has no land, but still has armies on ships that could get it some land. dont know if we had a rule for this situation. will ahve to go see. i'm inclined to let it live till its armies are dead (which shouldnt be too long).

Battles:
Sea Battle at N: - 12 English vs 13 African
Both sides were ordered to attack, and this is the only reason why the new african ships are envolved in open sea fighting. if only the african had ordered attacks, then those 3 ships would sit in dock.
After the first day, the British gained the upper hand in numbers, on then faltered and were unable to sink a single african ship on subsequent days (and there were quite a few).

Territories taken without a fight: 27, 55, 60, 61, 40,

Territory 44: - Rome 6 vs Africa 7 (with city)
Romes armies tired from walking for years, are no match for the fresh defenders. and rome is finaly a government without land or army. The surviving politicians loot the roman treasury and retire in a life of luxury under the rule of their new african overlords.

Territory 14 - Britain 24 vs France 8 (with city)
The british invaders overwhelm the French forces ocupying the spanish city, and take control of it.

Territory 13 - Britain 20 vs France 13 (with city)
In the first assault, the british loose over half of their forces, while dealing milimal damage to the French, it seems the battle is lost. On the second day the british rally and regain the numerical advantage they lost earlier. on the third day, the british took the city, though 90% of the original attackers lay dead around it.

Territory 11 - France 30 vs Britain 31 (with city)
The British easily repel the huge French advance and wipe two thirds of the invading force on the first day. The second day, its just a clean up job.

Territory 34 - France 21 vs Britain 20 (with city)
After 3 days of fighting the armies outside the city are both wiped out, and the city stands intact in the middle of the carnage.

Territory 36 - Germany 15 vs Britain 11 (with city)
after day one the recount proves that the opposing armies are exactly the same size even though germany started with a considerable advantage.
on day two, the germans get their revenge for their fallen brothers, and wipe out the British with almost no losses to their own forces.

Territory 37 - Britain 10 vs Germany 16 (with city)
A quick battle ends in defeat for the british attackers.

Code:
nation, size, gold to spend
Britain	50	69
Norway	27	115
Austria	0	72
Africa	79	153
France	17	184
Russia	6	228
Germany	5	81

ok, econ posted. econ PMs sent. update officialy done.

Four words: Norway-Britain-Africa alliance. It's the only sane thing.

I mean, you shouldn't have quit and I wasn't clear enough on what was happening. Roddy told me you quit because you though I betrayed you; fact was, I had no idea what would happen after the last player change thingy and so issued a blanket statement of unfriendship wherein I would steal caravans sent to me (except Africa, Lord of Trade) because I didn't know who was (still) allied or friendly. So afterwards I said "Oops, take some of my caravans in retaliation, I didn't know" but you had left.

I mean, Norway+Africa+Britain are the major powers at this point. If two of them join up, the minors will side with the third. Best option, IMO, is for us three to declare an Allied Victory. (And the game will be over at last!!)

I do not see where you are thinking Britain is powerful. They may have land, but their treasury is depleted, and they trade with nobody. Even if they were to trade with Norway, it still would not be enough. Britain is done.

Give me a bit of time for some private messages to be responded to before I answer the Allied Victory proposal.

Africa, Lord Of Trade (is that anything like Lord Of The Dance?)

oh, i forgot to post an explanation of Austria's situation.
they have no land now, but still have fleets and armies (which could take some land hopefully), so just deleting them out of the game would be a bit harsh i think.

anyway, after skimming the rules i figure that there's not much there that applies to this situation, so i think that what i'll do with them is as follows:
their armies/fleets live, they keep their cash, but untill they get some land, they can neither recieve nor send trade. and ofcourse with no cities/bases they cant build new units. so basicaly when their current cash runs out cause of upkeep(after 3 turns as of now) or when their armies are killed, they will ciese to exist.

also, while i always want to get orders as soon as possible, and i always want my games to continue, i will say this.
before you do your orders for this turn, please decide who you think your allies/enemies are. because if we have another turn where someone dont know who his allies are because of confusion, this game will become too one sided to be worth continuing. if its treatury that causes this, then i dont mind, that's part of the game, but please dont be confused about it. and in that light. please try to respond to your PMs from the other players as soon as possible, even if its to say something like "i cant realy give you an answer before i get an answer from player X about something" because the worst is sending a proposal/question and waiting for an answer that will never come and thinking that the recipient just hasnt taken the time to respond yet.

We have discussed the proposal from the honourable Norwegians ... and the British :king: ... and have a counter-proposal. A 4-way victory. Russia-France-Germany-Africa. Don't laugh, I'm serious.

Here's the trick. The so-called minor powers, France and Russia, aren't as minor as the honourable Scandinavians think. They've got more money than any of the so-called major powers, Norway, Britain, and Africa. And money is more important than territory under these rules. Britain proved that, by attacking France, who was larger, had more allies, and had more armies, but poorer. Just look what happened in that war. Now the tide has turned. Russia alone has more money than Norway plus Britain.

Also, numbers of countries in an alliance counts for a lot. Look at an example: one country size $100, versus two countries each size $50. Think it's an even match? Not even close. The 2 countries of size $50 trade with each other. After the first turn, they each earn $100, $50 from the board, $50 from trade, and together are easily twice as powerful as the enemy.

So, that's the proposal. Sure it may look like Lord of the Rings (hmm, Africa, the Dark Lord?), plus 3 lesser rings (for Elvenkind?), but in this case it's the 3 lesser rings that make the magic work. :king:

Okaaay.... AFR I can understand...
Africa 79 153
France 17 184
Russia 6 228
...on the basis of "3 countries with lots of money", but don't I have Germany beat on all counts?

Looks like if you can get Russia to accept you, you can be in. That starts with returning Moscow (61) to him, but there may be other conditions. Why don't the two of you talk it through directly?
