y'all post fancy stat.s

Toteone
Candidate: Hobo McHobosen
Home State: California
Color: Black
Party: The Bum Party

sorry toteone, cant do black.
1. it would merge with the state borders and erase the map when i try to fill it with another color.
2. the nubmers on the map would be invisible with a black (or even just very dark) fill.
hope the darker gray is ok.

Actually, that's the point of playing black! :) Adding the borders to your territory gives your faction an 'ominous feeling' like playing black on Risk only more terrifying, the blackness will wipe out the map!
That's why I gave you the option of gray: it's totally ok. :)

PS. You could change the borders to gray. :D =^_^=

well, we're up to 8 players now. while i'd love to get up to 10 (which is the limit) i'm perfectly fine with running the game with 8.
so the first update is on monday, so get your orders in before then.
i'll send a PM to all the players just to remind everyone that they joined and that i need orders for the first update, if you've already sent orders (there are a couple players who have) then please ignore the PM.

Sorry Roddy, NPC me in this NES.
If you really want me to play then spend first 40 hours campaigning in California and then 20 hours fundraising and campaigining in California for the rest of the game. After the second turn spend half the money all the time except all the last.

well, guess we're down to 7 players. glad i didnt go through the trouble of changing the color of the borders just to give you black as you color.
ah well.
update still on monday, so the rest of you get your orders in.

Roddy I am having touble with these rules can you send me a pm with a brief explanation of what I can do and stuff, I just dont understand American politics that well :P . If you do so in the next 10 hours or so, I will send orders in before I go to work. Thanks!

sure sheep. i should have done it to start off with, but kept putting it off.

Electoral Colledge (winning the elections)
In order to win the election a candidate does not have to get the most actual voters to vote for him. What he needs is to get the most states to vote for him.
The voters in each state decide which candidate their whole state wants as president, then all the states "vote" for their candidates to pick the president. Some states, being bigger, have more "votes" when weighing in to pick the president, so convincing california to vote for you is much more worth while then concining Nevada to vote for you. At the same time, it is probably much easier to convince Nevada to vote for you, because the other candidates are not likely to fight you too hard for Nevada's votes.
To win the election, a candidate has to have enough states vote for him that his "state vote" (actualy called electoral colledge votes) total is 270 or more. These are the numbers on each state on the map. So California is worth 55 votes, while Nevada is worth only 5.
You could win the elections if you win the 11 biggest states, and the other 40 vote for other people. But good luck gettin ALL 11 of the biggest (its probably smarter to go after a few of the bigger ones, but get some smaller ones too so you dont have to win all the big ones)

Winning a state
So the game boils down to 51 seperate popularity contests. One in each state. Every time you spend time or money in a state, you will gain popularity points in the state. The person with the most popularity in the state is its current winner. The difference between spending time or money:
How much popularity you gain by spending time in a state is based on two things:
1. amount of time spent (the more time you spend the more popularity you gain)
2. wheather there are other candidates that spent more time there than you did this turn (if others spent more time here, then you then you gain less popularity).
How much popularity you gain by spending money in a state is based on two things:
1. how much popularity you already have in the state (the more popular you are, the more you'll gain) 2. wheather there are other candidates that spent more money there than you did this turn (if others spent more money here, then you gain less popularity).
Notice that the actual amount of money spend does NOT influence how much you gain in the state (think of it as, your tv ad campaign was successfull, but by spending more on it, you'd just annoy people by interupting their favorite shows with you commercials all the time).

Orders help and hints
so you could spend your whole turn in one state, and prety much dominate that one state, but once you've convinced everyone in the state to vote for you, you wont gain anything for more hours you spend there. some smaller states will take as few as 10 hours of uncontested campaigning to "max out", and spending more time there will be completely fruitless. california, being the biggest state, still will only take 30 hours of uncontested campaigning to completely win over (meaning if you're the only candidate spending time in the state, 30 hours will get everyone in the state to vote for you, but competition from other players will make it unlikely that you can pull this off, and they could just take it from you next turn with their own 30 hours if you dont defend it somehow). If you continualy spend all of your time in one state then no one will ever take it from you, but you wont have the time to get other states either, so you'll never win. And as soon as you stop spending all your time in "your" state, someone can take it by spending all their time there for one turn.

Because it is impossible to win with just one state, you will need to spread your time between a bunch of states, which means that you wont be able to "defend" every state you win. What you need to do to beat the other players, is spend your time better then the others. If whenever you spend time in a state, you are the the one who spent the most time there, but not by a lot, then you'll win the game (if you win by alot every time, that means that your competitors spent time in more states, and will likely win with them).
Same goes for money. You could get votes by dumping all your money in a state you have some support in, but if you're the only one spending money in the state this turn, then $1k would have the same effect as $100K - you're still the biggest spender in the state this turn. Again, the goal should be to spend more money then your competitors, but not by much and in as many states as possible.

In general, spending time is for states that you do not have a good hold on yet, or ones where you want to quickly increase your popularity (or fight of another player trying to gain in the state). Spending money is in states where you already have a good amount of popularity and want to steadily increase it.
If you are already popular in a state, then by spending money in the state you could "defend" from other players spending small amounts of time in the state, but money will never ward off a concentrated effort to take the state from you by another candidate.

i'm gonna give you all a bit more time to send in orders, till later today, but i will do the update today. i may decide to just randomly throw hours around a few states for people who dont send in orders, but i realy dont want to do that.

edit: sent PMs to those that aint sent orders yet.

so first update.
got orders from everyone. there are now 7 players in the game.
almost none of the states that anyone visited were contested. only Georgia and Florida were visited by two players, and MjM beat Tossi in both by a good margin.

Highlights (the "state vote gain" numbers, is an indication of how effective your turn was on average. its not a great indicator, but only one i realy have at this point).

North King - 162 state vote gain
Issac Corel spread managed to visit 14 states during the week, in 9 of those he was the only candidate to visit, and has now gained an uncontested lead in those states. Because he spent relatively little time in each state, everywhere he met an opponent, he didnt gain as much support as his opponents, who concentrated their efforts more.

MjM - 183 state vote gain
Randy McPharkin spent all his time in Florida and Georgia and has gained wide support in both states. If it hadnt been for Brian Shelley's disrupting presents, McPharkin would have likely convinced every person in both states to vote for him. As of now its virtualy impossible to find a person in the state who wont vote for one or the other, and the vast majority (80-90%) would say they'll vote for McPharkin.

Stalin006 - 202 state vote gain
William Rainer spent so much time in his homestate of Callifornia this week that every poll now shows a 100% support for him in the state. Late in the week he went out to some neighboring states and gathered some support in all three as well.

Cuivienen - 128 state vote gain
Louisa Mitchell spent time in her homestate to bolster support there and visited some the states near by where she was also unopposed and was very well recieved by the voters. The only candidate to already start asking for campaign contributions, she has raised large amounts of donations from her homestate of Pennsylvania.

tossi - 153 state vote gain
Brian Marshall Shelley toured much of the SouthEast of the country and was well recieved by his fellow christians, but in Georgia and Florida his visits were constantly overshadowed by Randy McPharkin's rallys.

Blackheart - 177 state vote gain
George Washington II convinced everyone in his home state to vote for him, then spent half the week campaigning in New York state and has gained wide support in the state. Smaller tours of New Hampshire and Massachussets made him the leading candidate for "New England".

Sheep - 202 state vote gain
'Gunshooin' Sam Yeager visited four states during the week, and has become the leading candidate in all four. Some competition was met from Issac Corel in a couple states, but Yeager came out ahead both times.

Based on the update I've created an Excel file that anyone is welcome to use; I'm feeling generous. In first place currently is Mrs. Unclaimed with 112 electoral votes, followed by stalin006 with 77 and North King with 73. In last place is tossi with 49, just edging out MjM and Blackheart with 50 each for the bottom spot. Good luck to all candidates.

updated the update, lol.
added the money totals above the map.
the "state" and "electoral" table is votes you've now got, think of the state ones as popular votes, sort of how many actual people are voting for you at this point. the national one is basicaly a total of the map shown numbers, these are the ones you actualy win the election by.
posted the highlights from the update, i probably wont do one for every player in future updates (just the actualy interesting events), but this time i did.
