I hate micro managing my workers. I will to a large extent but when my empire gets massive and I'm only building stuff in my third ring I really don't care anymore if they build a TP or a farm, unless I'm going for something specific. The thing is I hate automating my workers in civ 5. Primarily because I've noticed they like to start roading, or worse railroading, all over the place. This was no big deal in civ 4 when they had nothing better to do but in civ 5 that gets expensive really fast.

So long story short, has anybody found the do not build roads button? Because I haven't, and I want it.

i personally like to have control over them =/ so i seldom use the automatic button. If you don't need them , put them to sleep ? =/

I probably use fewer worker than most and rely heavily on captured slave labor and I wouldn't dream of putting them on auto and when there's nothing for them to do I delete most of them.

Like most I have more improved tiles than I can use and after a while every tile is improved and I just keep a couple workers around for possible tile expansion and when I discover Uranium etc.

To me, if I want to win on Immortal and move up to Deity (and not take advantage of exploiting severe AI weakness that may be patched some day) I want to micro everything, especially my half dozen workers.

.. neilkaz ..

I don't have a ton of workers. The ones I do have are mostly stolen like yours. I usually make two, maybe more if I am unlucky with how many I can steal and I just like to put them on auto when I don't have much for them to do but fill in the outer reaches of my territory. I am already playing on immortal without using exploits, and as important as micro is, not spending forever to play a game is important too, which is incredibly difficult in civ 5. So yeah I would like to use the automate button, I just don't want it to lead to tons of roads t no where.

Has anyone found a way to keep them from building roads?

Line them up against a wall and shoot them. Then sell their tools for 7 gold. Win-Win.

What? that's a terrible waste :P The real way is to put them in grasslands in enemy territory to be slaughtered to lure soldiers onto -33% defense.

Someone mentioned using them to take Barb camps after boats destroy the units. This is a great idea!

Probably better off letting the barbs capture and keep them. You can always go rescue them if you need workers at a latter time. no maintenance either

That is actually a very good idea  ... that is, if no one is going to stomp those barbs besides you ( well, that now is easy if you have a barb camp in a island, given how the AI is waterphobic, but ... )

Personally, I'd like to see the idea of storing settlers and workers with barbs go away. This could be easily done by placing a turn limit on the time it takes before they are simply lost vs rescued.

At some point stockholm syndrome isn't reversible? In fact, it'd be cool to see captured workers try to escape if not guarded. This might help cut down on very early turn thefting workers from CSs which I find a little cheesy too.

If they were slaves you can let the barbs capture them and then rescue them and return them to the original owner for a diplo/influence boost.
