"Rock can't die -- its design is flawless."

I had a discussion about this with some friends recently (one in particular who never fails to remind everyone that he has a degree in music theory... only to turn around and applaud Avenged Sevenfold) and they kept harping on how "bad" popular music is "today." I just kept asking "why are you paying any attention to it, then?" Like why be offended that it's "bad" if you aren't listening to it in the first place? I mean, we're all in our 20s and 30s... you're just now figuring out that commercial radio sucks and that mainstream media outlets promote shallow products??

I know it's trendy and hip to diss media products like Kesha or Beiber, but I guess I assume that nobody outside the teen demographic really listens to them. It doesn't make for much discussion when all you can come up with is "pop music sucks!" Err, okay... what about all the GREAT music that doesn't show up on the radio or or have TV commercials or Mountain Dew promotional contests? I mean, that's the stuff that's worth listening to, so why are we wasting our energy getting offended by Soulja Boy??

Do what I do: intentionally remain aloof; play it up for lulz with your friends! :goodjob:

That style of rock is dead.
Almost.
That style of rock isn't dead as long as people who were around when Petty was around are still alive. It's too soon to tell. In 40 or 50 years after Petty is dead will be the true test of whether him or his style of rock is dead. But that's a minor point.
40 or 50 years ? Have you seen how he looks like ?
Aaaand any semblance of respect I might have had left for Tom Petty is now gone.
I lost that when i first read about Tom Petty on CFC.

That doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Just because it's coming out of Tom Petty's mouth doesn't mean it's correct.

I never said it was true. I said to discuss it.

Ugh, can people stop saying this crap? This is possibly one of the best times for music and people dont appreciate it because they are too lazy or dont have the interest to actually go beyond all the stuff they were force fed from baby boomers.

I see your point, but today we don't have Beatles or Stones or Hendrix or Zeppelin, do we? If there really were bands of such quality they would have been discovered. Unlike the 60s, where a band like the Velvet Underground could be completely unknown, the Internet era allows a band with genuine talent to rise to fame.

I blame this dry spell on changing youth culture - earlier, every kid and his brother was in a band or musical venture. Today, everyone's poking each other on Facebook.

Rocks indeed can't die.

Hey hey, my my. No, it can never die as there's more to the picture than what meets the eye.

Winning post right here.

 Neil Young.

Who cares?

Man, there are bands of equal quality to the ones you posted. Just look for them, theyre there. Stop living under the delusion that the past was some kind of golden age. It wasnt. You think the average person back then listened to Zeppelin and Hendrix? Nah. Because they werent nearly as revered then as they are now. Its almost ridiculous. We put these bands on such an unreachable pedestal that it becomes so easy to dismiss the current music scene (which is absolutely amazing) and go in circles listening to the same ancient crap over and over. It becomes cool to be a music snob and pretend that revering these old giants is the pinnacle of what is means to be a music enthusiast, when in reality it's quite the opposite. Sticking to the same safe and tested bands isn't what a real music fan does.

You gotta dig the well man, this is how its always been. Find that shiz.

Then enlighten me. If there's good music today, I want to hear it. What do you listen to from today that isn't heavy metal?

The 00s seem to have been pretty uneventful in musical terms, although this probably appears to be so to me because i was infinitely more into music in the 90s.

Some more good modern bands:

Leningrad. Russian ska band, formed in 1997, disbanded in 2008:

Jesu, formed in 2003. Maybe too metal for your tastes, I dunno:

Both Ananda Shanka and State of Bengal had been around a while, but when they came together to make their "Walking On" album, it was a work of art!

Then there's Tomahawk, formed in 2000:

The absolutely excellent punk band Pasi, which has been around since 1996:

The Cracow Klezmer Band, around since 1997 until about 2007, apparently. Be sure to give them a listen!

Eyaculación Post-mortem, a goth/psychobilly band. Probably not to your liking:
