Rocks 2 Rockets

If C2C doesn't then R2R wont. I think they have some things in common but they were being developed at the same time so might not be exactly the same

C2C has some elements of k-mod but k-mod is incompatible in many spots as well. I'm not sure how many K-mod elements were infused into the code before R2R was split out... I don't think there was much of it in there at that time if any.

Would I be able to install K–mod on top of r2r or will there be compatibility issues and the mod won't run as designed?

In general you can't install two Civ IV mods on top of each other it just does not work. In this case you have to merge the code in the dll and then recompile it as both k-mod and r2r have their own code for the dll.

So I guess it sounds like that the way that r2r was compiled that there seems to not be the need for K – mod as r2r was already tweaked to be well-balanced, with a challenging AI adjusted for the added components of the mod and an overall enjoyable playing experience?

It was built on a much earlier Caveman2Cosmos version, made to simplify and diminish the complexity level. Caveman2Cosmos was not all that far removed from AND at the time, as it is an evolution from a time before the AND renewal project. C2C began shortly after Afforess stopped working on AND for the most part. C2C was initially an effort to recapture the majority of some of the best modmod stuff for AND that had been rendered out of date by recent AND advancements and include it all in one great mod.

C2C had some severe flaws at the time stemming from a basis of a mod that had long been pushing new boundaries and taken little time to polish and perfect. So I won't claim R2R didn't inherrit a lot of the challenges we've struggled long and hard to overcome in C2C since the splitting off that R2R represented. It may or may not be able to match k-mod in its elegant AI improvements in some places.

I see, well if I could I would love to run c2c but it doesn't look like my laptop would be able to handle it that's why I was looking into r2r. Given my specs and my interest in C2C do you think this is the mod I should try? Does it have stability issues or something? Would it be an overall enjoyable experience as well as a stable one or any other mods that you would suggest that are similar to C2C that my machine could handle? Thanks in advance

I respect the AND team and what they've done. If this mod or C2C won't do well for you (try the 3GB switch for this by the way) then perhaps A New Dawn would be a good fit for your system.

It's a memory trick to use on weaker systems. Do a search on the forum for 3GB Switch and you should find how to implement it for your system.

I did search for it in the forums, nothing comes up other than our discussion about it. Sorry to ask but if you know where it is I'd greatly appreciate if you could post a link, thanks so much in advance.

The new forum must be making it harder to find. If that search isn't working, I would have the same trouble myself. Maybe someone else 'round here would be able to be more helpful from here then. Possibly ask in the main forum section for civ 4?

Ok hopefully someone else can chime in if they know. By the way between r2r and AND which one is easier on the machine?

Not sure. AND has had a lot more development since r2r was divided out from C2C. It may be a lot more stable and might not even be quite as heavy. But it could also be more system taxing since they've been working on it quite a bit. Very hard to say. When I was working on a system similar to yours I needed the switch for AND but that was pre-C2C days even.

Ok I think I tracked down the threads on this enabling the 3 GB switch is employed in order to avoid MAF errors it seems?

Enable the 3GB switch on Windows Vista

  • Right-click Command Prompt in the Accessories program group of the Start menu. Click Run as Administrator.
  • At the command prompt, enter "bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 3072"
  • Restart the computer.
Now I assume I could start the game without doing this and if I get the MAF error I could do it later and it won't matter that I started the game before employing the switch?

The reason why I ask about starting the game first before enabling it if needed, is that I read that not all graphics drivers might work optimally with the switch enabled.

Yeah, but we always found it helped with speed of play and stability in general. And yeah, that's the one. Our graphic drivers did better not worse.
