Rod02-Caesar's Confusion

I've got MTDG 2 due tonight and some turns with SGOTM 14. I'll try to sneak in a looksee tonight and get a grasp of what is going on.

I know that the basic game idea is :trouble: , on AI graves and avoid the deadly :spear:, but it helps me to grasp what is going on by having the looksee.

Mmmm.... army. This is going to be messy for the AI. (It also means we can always swap SoZ to the Epic, if disaster befalls us, which is nice.)

Karakorum in the Red! Woot!
Army! Woot Woot!!

It looks like you guys finally got your bearings. Good luck with Philosophy, I think you have a reasonable chance.

Just our first army.....I predict many more. I think at this point, an army of Legionaries should be deadly, considering the AI has Spears defending. I think it may be time to go bash Germany and the Iroquois big time.

How many turns are we to do each set? I presumed 10 or at least up to 10. Was I supposed to do more than 10?

I think we can drop to 10 turn sets, I played 18 just to get us back to even turn numbers. Plus I had some momentum going. I think we are in good shape and can go on the offensive.

01 Warriors
01 Archer
03 Spear
04 Catapults
01 Army
16 Legionary

Current Units: 30
Allowed Units: 32
Support Costs: 0 gpt

01 Iron connected.
02 Ivory connected.

We have one settler, but we will need more cities. Hmm, have to look into that.

Cycle through the cities.
Real tempted to change Rome to a settler, but I'll wait a bit and see how the battles go.
Karakorum has a BG to be improved and Horses to connect.
We're cranking out 4 turn vLegionaries in Antium, no change for that.
Cumae has our Army and trains a new Legionary next turn. Has a BG that needs a mine.
Work an open mined BG next to Rome and Neapolis's commerce jumps from 1 to 3, all science.
In Pompeii the walls complete this IBT, worker will follow, then barracks.
One worker and both slaves are working to connect Pisae, which will take 2 turns.

We have one settler, but we will need more cities.

City Planning 750 BC
T750_Rome.jpg

The city ruins NE of Pisae (Light Blue Dot) look like a good (not great) place for our next city. It is a bit tighter spacing than what we have right now, but it doesn't encroach upon Viking territory to our north, so less cultural pressure. It could be connected easily. Or do we want to place it 3NW of Pisae (Pink Dot), towards the coast (and currently in the fog)?

What is our next tech? Philosophy?

I'm only planning on playing 10 turns.

That is going hurt the towns (light blue) in the long run. We do not have to worry about culture pressure here as we will take down that town. These early towns will be the core, so CxxC should give them enough room, but less will cramp all.

Philo should be worth a shot. Where is the save?

I'd move Pink Dot 1 south, making it CxxC from both Pisae and Karakorum. That one seems obvious-ish to me. Given that, Blue Dot would either move 1N (keeping the CxxC) or 1NW (CxC to Pisae). I think I'd tend to go 1N personally, but obviously there's a bit of guesswork involved.

I wonder if expanding south or southwest might not be at least as good an option, though perhaps tactical constraints prohibit it.

EDIT: And agree that Philo is worth taking a poke at. If it doesn't work, so be it, Monarchy after that.

I'm thinking that we could keep some enemy towns(saves on making settlers) but don't mess with waiting for them to not autoraze If they autoraze, so be it. What survives can be incorporated into our empire, especially further out, where the corruption gets bad. The save is on the last post of the previous page. DWetzel and vmxa are right about the placement of the two planned towns, keep to CxxC until we hit 90% corrupt, then CxC will be fine. Nice summary, CBob, your thoroughness does you credit and is a big help for planning.

I would say we will not want to use any ICS, because it takes too many settlers and the map is huge. Maybe one here and there, but not many. I suspect your are correct that we will be able to hold some captured towns as they will be weak.

In addition to them being weak, any border will shift fairly soon in this game. If it was maybe Emperor or DG, then borders will hold longer. It is hard to flip a ton without culture over lapping.

Need the save to look at any details.

[750 BC IBT]
Purple Warrior suicides as Veii (1 of 1).

Cumae vLegionary -> vLegionary in 8.
Pompeii walls -> barracks in 10.

1 0730 BC

Catapults miss the two Iroquois warriors on the mountain S of Veii.
Wake Spear in Veii and move to protect Worker from wounded Iroquois Warrior. This leaves three defenders in Veii facing two attackers.
Redlined eLegionary moves to Karakorum to heal.
Ping a German Archer on the mountain S of Antium.

Two German rArchers are N of Rome. Rome kills one and Antium gets credit for the other (3 of 3).

Science drops to 30%, Polytheism in 1, +17 gpt.
[IBT]
Another Iroquois Warrior suicides at Veii (4 of 4).

Mongols want to talk. We say no.

We learn Polytheism and start on Philosophy, 20 turns at 30%.

2 0710 BC

Ping an Egyptian Archer in the grass SE of Antium.
Ping an Iroquios Warrior on the mountain S of Veii.
Ping a German Archer on the mountain SE of Cumae.

Pisae is connected. Irrigate that tile (1 Worker and 2 Slaves; 2 turns).

eLegionary N of Rome moves into Rome.
Redlined eLegionary arrives at Karakorum.

Drop Luxury down to 0%, Science up to 100%; Philosophy in 6, -6 gpt. We have 36 gold, and one city to build.

Karakorum is now flip-proof (MapStat). And of the civs we know, we have the most culture (248) and best growth (+6 cpt).
[IBT]
Antium vLegionary -> vLegionary in 4.
Neapolis catapult -> catapult in 5.

3 0690 BC

Catapult miss at Antium, aiming at 2 German Archers on the mountain S of the city.
Last time these both moved off the mountain and aimed for Neapolis, which has only one defender. I expect the same this IBT.

Ping an Iroquios Warrior on the mountain S of Veii.
eLegionary finishes him off (5 of 5).
eLegionary from Cumea dispatches the remaing Iroquois Warrior (6 of 6).

Mine E of Veii is done, worker moves to BG NE of Cumea to mine.
eLegionary in Rome goes home to Antium.

Catapult in Neapolis moves to Antium, now two Catapults in that city.

We are paying 1 gpt in unit support.
Philosophy in 5, 30 gold, -7 gpt.
[IBT]
German Archers head to Neapolis, leaving the mountain and moving into the grass N of Rome.
Two Mongol Archers are adjacent to Karakorum.

Pisae walls -> barracks in 10.

4 0670 BC

Ping the Egyptian Archer E of Antium.

German Archers N of Rome die. Again, Rome and Antium split the honors, with the new eLegionary getting another piece of the action (8 of 8).
Move a vLegionary from Antium onto that mountain (three defenders left in Antium).
Mine N of Antium is complete, begin road.

Irrigation complete SE of Pisae, but Viking Warrior prevent work north of Pisae. Worker and Slaves move S of Pisae, will road to connect to Karakorum.

Settler Pair arrive at city site (1S of Pink Dot).

eLegionary (already in place) removes one Mongol Archer at Karakorum (9 of 9).

Philosophy in 4, 23 gold, -7 gpt.
[IBT]
Bad News. German Horses.

Mongol Archer fails to take Karakorum (10 of 10).

Rome vLegionary -> settler in 5.

One catapult at Cumae misses both German Archers on the mountain SE of the city.
Send in a cataplut from Veii.
Move vSpear to protect Worker NW of Cumae from German Horse.

Worker and Slaves start road S of Pisae.
Ravenna is founded, walls in 10, grows in 10. Access to 3 BGs.

Ping the Egyptian Archer at Antium.
New vLegionary in Rome heads to Neapolis, to allow that vLegionary to head to Pisae. It (Pisae) will face two Viking Warriors on the IBT. And the way the roads are right now, it takes 4 road tiles to arrive from the nearby cities. No help will arrive this turn, but help is on the way.

vLegioary in Cumea defeats one German Archer on the mountain and promotes to Elite (11 of 11).
Wake the Army in Cumea and it unseats the German Horse in the area (12 of 12).

At 100% science we will run out of money before we learn Philosophy (16 gold, 3 turns, -6 gpt). At 90%, Philosophy in 4, -2 gpt.

Drop Science down to 90%
[IBT]
We repulse one Viking Warrior at Pisae (13 of 13). The other one does not attack.

Just a Thought
T650_HeroicEpic.jpg

Heroic Epic, anyone?

6 0630 BC

vLegionary arrives in Pisae and slaughters the Viking warrior still left (15 of 15).
Army outguns a German Archer (16 of 16) and heads to Antium.

Raise Science back to 100%; 14 gold, Phiolosophy in 2, -6 gpt.
[IBT]

Drop Science to 90%, Philosophy in 1, -3 gpt (8 in the bank).
[IBT]
Egyptian Archer fails to defeat a Legionary at Antinum (18 of 18). The other one runs away.

We learn Philosophy and then we learn Monarchy and then we start on Literature, 10 turns at 90%.

For right now we stay in Despotism.

Neapolis catapult -> catapult in 4.

8 0590 BC

Drop Science to 80%; Literature in 12 turns, +3 gpt (5 gold in the bank).

No one inside our borders at this time.
Army stays in place to heal.
Worker and Slaves begin to mine the BG NE of Pisae.
[IBT]

Played only 8 turns. I stopped because we won the race to Philosophy and picked up Monarchy. At this point we are still in Despotism. We are learning Literature, but have no beakers invested in it. So we have those things (government and tech) to discuss before moving on.

Statue of Zeus is 17 turns away. Vikings and Iroquois are building the Pyramids, but that started before these turns. We are the only one building Statue of Zeus.

We have a free (unassigned) worker in Neapolis. I was moving him to Karakorum to connect Horses or maybe improve some BGs along the way.

The worker NW of Cumae will finish his BG mining this IBT.

Rome is building a settler; could switch to a Legionary, though we seem to have plenty of them, and most of them Elites, too.

East Rome 590 BC
Spoiler :

T590_EastRome.jpg

Egypt and Germany are still sending units. Egypt is focused on Antium. Germany was focused on Neapolis, but in the last few turns it has been hard to tell.

West Rome 590 BC
Spoiler :

T590_WesttRome.jpg

One new city and rather quiet the last few turns. Horses can be connected and we need to road to Ravenna. Pisae needs better roads; it is four road moves from Pisae to either Neapolis or Pompeii.

Nice going on the military front.

Looks like we managed to stabilize the game and have our defenses ready. We should use this to build up the infrastructure. We need more workers Library prebuilds wouldn't be to far off either.

The sooner we get to Monarchy, the better. The longer we wait the greater the chances will be for a long anarchy. We only have SoZ going and no one else is making it, so the loss of turns should not hurt it.

Since we have the feeling, that we got enough military power, I agree on that.

Monarchy slingshot worked, sweeet! With ~8-10 cities, we could hope for a quick Anarchy. It will halve our unit support, but hopefully the added income will compensate.
I guess we'll want to grow our towns to cities to offset the unit support issue and we'll need that Incense Germany is holding. Speaking of them, lets heal the army and go find their Horses, they need to be unhorsed permanently.

Nothing from DWetzel so far.

I will play for now, if he reappearsd we just swap places.

Doh, sorry. Didn't realize it was me.

Go ahead Kulko, we will call this a swap.

Will post save later when my Civ Compi has Inet Access but here is the short version.

Kill Ratio 22-0 and no real thread in sight
Got a second leader and rushed Heroic Epic
Met Arabia Traded Construiction for Monarchy and declared
Destroyed Leipzig and started the attack on Berlin
Build Hispalis on the Viking Border.

We could really use a Settler factory right now so maybe we should switch Rome to
Granary.
