Rod1- Something Enjoyable

lurker's comment: does your loading, moving and offloading require 3 movements or can you do it in 2? i.e. load into ship and move= 1. unload later turn in port =2.

I will try to get some starts up on sunday

Roster-
Rodent
Yahya
CommandoBob?
we still need at least 2 more

Of course i dont object! Roll 'em up!

Pencil me in as a part-timer, I will play some turns when I'm not busy with other SG's. I am familiar with the Vikings, so that should help. Having Berserkers will greatly offset the lack of cavalry, they are the most powerful foot unit until Marines. Other thoughts....we'll want Knight's Templar, very powerful foot unit, a great compliment to Berserks. Tech-wise, we'll want the Monarchy slingshot, The Vikings start wth Alphabet and Warrior Code, so that wil help immensely, as both techs lead the direction we want to go. We could also consider an early Archer rush on a nearby enemy, starting with Archers will be very handy.

Not quite.

Loading into a ship from another tile will consume 1 movement point. Fractions are ignored, so walking on roads for two tiles and then loading into a ship will end the movement; similiar to walking on roads for two tiles then moving into an unroaded tile.

Loading into a ship from within a tile (in a city or a part of a ship-chain) takes 0 movement points.

What you describe is what Rodent is trying to avoid. He doesn't want any unit to load -> move by ship -> unload/attack all on one turn.

Ship Movement Question
After that first turn, we have two options on unit movement. I did not see this earlier or I would have mentioned it.

1) After an IBT aboard a ship, both ship moves and unit moves are available to the unit. A unit could be moved and could unload.
2) After an IBT aboard a ship, either ship moves or units moves are available to the unit, but not both. We have a choice: either move it or unload it.

I've modified the game rules.

Variant: Always War
Level: Regent
Map Size: Standard
Land mass: Continents
Water %: 60 (more land to conquer)
Standard number of opponents, all random.
Age, etc: middle values

Special Rules:
Foot soldiers only.
No land based attacking units with more than one movement factor may be built. (No Horses, no Tanks and nothing based on them.) Bombardment units can be built, regardless of their movement rate (they cannot capture anything).
All naval units can be built.
All air units can be built.

Loading into Naval vessels
Each unit that loads into a naval vessel is required to spend at least one IBT in that vessel. At sea or in port does not matter. No unit can load into a vessel, the vessel moves and that unit moves out of the vessel, all on the same turn. This would include both military and non-military units (settlers and workes, mainly).

(This has the same effect as not using ports, but gives an easy way to measure it. At least, I think it is an easy way to measure it!)

New Civs
We may trade techs and such on the first turn we meet another civ. We cannot trade luxuries, resources or gold per turn. We can buy techs, sell techs or trade for techs. We cannot make any per-turn deals (peace, military alliance, trade embargo, etc). On the first turn we meet a new civ, before the turn ends, we must declare war. We never make peace.

We Are...
Vikings!

I am about to roll some starts, and I realized that we haven't discussed barbarians (unless I've missed it). I am setting them on "Roaming" for now.

At Regent, even raging barbarians would only be a nuisance, so Roaming is fine. Make sure your starts include a river and not too rugged. Otherwise, it doesn't have to be a HoF special with 4 cows, a lux, and a goody hut, just not too ugly. I hate jungle and mountainous starts.

lurker's comment: I guess I have already signed in for the subscription service so I just wanted to mention that I am really looking forward to watching this game. Can't wait to see the starts. :scan:

Same here.

Guys, I chatted with Darski and Shes available as a player

I will roll starts tommorow

Some people are just born insane... i don't know if that is me or Rodent

this came up in a recent chat so I would like to mention that my usual build sequence is Warrior, warrior, barracks, settler. The first warrior goes wandering carefully while the second would babysit the city. the challenge is that roaming barbs are a pain in the neck and we could lose a lot from their pillaging. (I am not a big fan of anything but sedentary barbs)

I do think we need to get that Rax up as quickly as we can. right after we complete our first settler we can start on Vet archers.

@ CivRulesAll

You are in! Just dont hesitate to stop playing and ask if you are doubtful

I do think I need to mention that the Random Number Gods really, really, really, really, really, hate me and I could be a major drag on our kill ratio.

I decided to go back to my Mayan game and just see if I could take out Japan (7 cities) out of 35 offensive units, I had to sue for peace when I only had 5 units left. I had taken 3 cities far from Kyoto in that first round but had to stop for 20 turns to build up some cavs to go back and get those next 3 cities. On this round of war I lost about one third of my Cavs... mostly to spearmen.

I'm just letting you know that that is how my games go.

I will understand if you don't need that albatross around your throats while you try to win an AW game

BTW, Just as I am filling a caravel to head over to the last Japanese city, the Sumerians at the other end of the world declared on me... According to my MAdv. I am weak compared to them.

Could you post that save?

Or maybe start a new thread focused on that save?

I don't keep saves generally. I was fed up and removed those ones.
