Role Play Challenge: The Amazon Queen

I'd suggest capturing Mecca ASAP, and spread Hinduism around as fast as humanly possible. Or, if Buddhism spreads to you, that would be even better, seeing as Isabella will never, ever convert to Hinduism.

Actually in base 3.17 it can easily be accomplished with a combination of gifting her a missionary (if she's already in theocracy) and spies...from there you can spam it to her and hope for the best, but she'll still prolly change back.

The Amazon Queen: PArt II

Boudica moves ahead with her plans, to assemble an army to take down the Arabs. But they are protective, and yikes they already have copper and slavery before we even get a road to our copper. What is a Celtic Queen to do???

To start Boudica dictates to research some economy techs first, and the tech order went: wheel/Pottery/Writing/Masonry and start Animal Husbandry.

The Celtic Woman may be impressive with a sword, but her traits and UB leave much to be desired.

The Celtic Huntsman Scout continues to be useful, mapping out nearly all the continent and finding those last few MALE leaders skulking behind corners.

BoudicaB0000.jpg

HA! Boudica laugh's at the Mayan civilization, easy picking.

Meanwhile, the Celtics settle their second city

BoudicaB0001.jpg

On a hill (We are Celtia afterall!) and calim 4 strong resources early, providing our Sister Cathy does not get too close.

Boudica meets another Males leader

BoudicaB0002.jpg

And then meets another Male, er Sister, er, well I don't exactly know but we'll treat them as an enemy.

BoudicaB0003.jpg

Now, our Arabian Rivals have been busy, building a few settlers and teching off Monotheism

BoudicaB0004.jpg

Gratious me, 2 Holy Cities!!!!!

Boudica Assembles here army through a highly productive Capital and forrest chopping.

BoudicaB0005.jpg

Excessive perhaps, but Boudica is NOT one to fool arround.

At the same time we teched writing and

BoudicaB0006.jpg

We also opened borders with our three other Sisters including Isabella, hoping whe sends us a few Buddhist Missionaries.

The Celtic Army attacks Mecca first, looking to cut Saladins empire in half.

BoudicaB0007.jpg

We have the Hindu holy city but chose NOT to adopt Hinduism. Hell, with being charismatic and access to gold, we don't need it. The Holy City also get's +5 culture so borders popped fast.

Next we took Damascus pretty easily.

BoudicaB0008.jpg

At this point things went so well that the Celtic capital starting building a library.

The final hammer blow falls on the city of Medina

BoudicaB0009.jpg

So sal was protective, had copper in his capital BFC and hooked up, yet was clobbered by Boudica. Agressive trait rules protective! Also due to the chrismatic trat we have a unit at 13 XP and thus level 5. If we get him better promoted, perhaps we can open up West Point without needed an GG attached to a unit although a medic III unit is a big advantage.

We did some housekeeping, have a good sized treasury, and building some roads. Our empire

BoudicaB0010.jpg

And our cities

BoudicaB0011.jpg

So there we are. My feeling is that we may have some diplomacy problems being between the backstabbing sisters, but we have some dynamite lands for ealy teching!

So my plans.

1) Library in Capital and run a pair of scientists ASAP.
2) We need some workers.
3) Cottage everywhere
4) Get one more settler north of Vienna to help cut off Cathy a bit. I think she has alot of last to her west to settle.
5) Start expanding North and then NE and NW.
6) Tech towards Currency and CoL very fast, even before Iron Working and access to the UU.

So how is our Mighty Amazonian Celtic Queen doing!

First a few general remarks:
- Technicaly, demanding Tribute or making peace for a tech+gold is a "trade". But i think thats allowed, isnt it?

- Every few rounds, one of the males is asking for open borders, thats annoying....

- Are the male leaders realy random? I mean, mostly protective civs or with a UU-Archers + Sitting Bulls Dog Soldiers... you realy need a powerful warmonger like Boudica to fight them!

- Aggressive+Charismatic is just crazy: 13 XP for a combat 4 formation Spearman, and the Supermedic for 28 XP (only 2 more XP then for a Aztec Supermedic-Jaguar).

My shadow game till 1 AD.
Spoiler :
3655 Agriculture, building worker
3355 Archery, building barracks
3085 Mining, building archers
2515 Bronze Working, building settler
2320 Wheel, Bronze in the BFC! settle the ivory/marmor/rice spot in the west, start building axes
2130 Masonry, chopping Stonehenge (finished 2070)
1940 Pottery
1740 Animal Husbandry, war agsinst Saladin
1670 Saladin dead, got 3 cities, including Hindu holy and 2 worker. was a close fight, survivers are only 2x CR III Axe + C III Formation Speer
- Isabella is Buddist, all others have Judaism, my cities are all Hindu, i dont want to be the only Hindu nation. Hatty is sending missionaries to everyone but me, need to capture a Judaism city soon.
~1500 Isabella demands hunting, i give it to her, seems Alphabet is discoverd, but i have nothing to trade yet.
1040 Ironworking. the tundra city i settled for Stone has Iron, great!
950 War against Sitting Bull with the newly built Gallic warriors.
580 Great Prophet -> Shrine in Mecca (+12 Gold)
550 Mathematics, traded to the 4 Ladies for: Med, Poly, Mono, Priesthood, Fishing, Sailing, Alphabet
420 Great General: i make a CR III, guerilla III Tactis Leadership Gallic Warrior with 80% retreat chance
350 Capture a city with Judaism from Sitting Bull, convert to Judaism. Sitting Bull has only one city left, dont know where, so i make peace.
300 Construction, Isabella wants to trade for Monarchy, sure.
270 War against Hammurabi, now with Catapults.
240 Hanging Gardens in Bibracte (with 3 chops)
100 Horseback Riding, trade it with Contruction to Cathy for Currency and Money. Demanding Money from all the Males, begging some from Hatty. Cathy and Hatty are pleased, Victoria and Isabella only cautious. The male leaders dont realy like me, but they all have only a limited lifespan left.
20 BC second GG, this one will be my Supermedic, needs only 28 XP for Medic III + Woodsman III, the first GG is already at 55 XP (CR III, Guerilla III, Tactis, Leadership, Cover)
10 BC 4 Cities captured from Hammurabi, now peace for Calendar + some Money, war will continue in 10 Turns, with War Elephants!
Research is on Aesthetics->Literature, i plan to build Great Lib + National epic in Bibracte. GP-Pool will be mixed with Priest and Engineers, but both of them will be useful too if i get one.

Score:
Boudica 1060
Catherine 719
Hatshepsut 595
Isabella 587
Victoria 531
Males between 534 and 154

So far only few request, 1 for a tech, some to stop trading with Victoria which i had to deny. I see only problems with close border to Vicy and Cathy and the raising "war agsinst friend" penalty (-3 so far)
Religions: Buddist: Isabella+Sury, Hindu: Sitting Bull with his last city somewhere hidden, the rest ist Judaism.
I think i will raze all Buddist cities, i dont want Isabella to ask me to change religion.

First a few general remarks:
- Technicaly, demanding Tribute or making peace for a tech+gold is a "trade". But i think thats allowed, isnt it?

Yeah, I think that's fine.

- Every few rounds, one of the males is asking for open borders, thats annoying....

Hmmm, yes it is. I plan to just go to war, that should stop most of the request ;)

- Are the male leaders realy random? I mean, mostly protective civs or with a UU-Archers + Sitting Bulls Dog Soldiers... you realy need a powerful warmonger like Boudica to fight them!

Yes they are! ACtually any leader properly played can take most of those leaders out except for Hammurabi. If you read the Suleiman game I shredded Sitting Bull and Al pretty easily with an Imperialistic/Philosphical leader. That said, Boudica certainly makes it more fun!

- Aggressive+Charismatic is just crazy: 13 XP for a combat 4 formation Spearman, and the Supermedic for 28 XP (only 2 more XP then for a Aztec Supermedic-Jaguar).

You bet it is, makes up for a really bad economical leader.

Regarding my game (I have not read any spoilers yet).

I am thinking that after AH I should hit meditation (monestaries) and priesthood to unlock the Oracle and build a few temples. We have marble and getting a shrined holy city early can pay for alot of Celtic troops.

Great Start!

Since the weakest part of my game is diplomacy I'm totally intimidated by this one.

Excited to see how you do it.

There is no doubt that your economy must be brought online ASAP, but it seems to me you are in dire straits diplomatically. I would reccomend trading for/teching feudalism ASAP if things do not improve and garrisoning a considerable number of longbows in border cities with Cathy to discourage attacks for a bit of time, I would try and get Buddhism as fast as possible, to the point of leaving a city without a religion unconnected for a bit to try and encourage a missionary from Isabella. Meanwhile I expect to see warring in nearly every round, your leader's only economical advantage is:trouble:, so don't stop using it, you are pursuing a domination victory, so the economy should only be a means of supporting domination, techs will not be too important for two reasons.

1. Extortion will grab you many
2. I have found that the larger my empire gets, if I prioritize Espionage builds (courthouses, jails, castles, later on security bearaeus/intelligence agencies) I have enormous espionage points and am able to rob my technologically advanced neighbours(Amazonian sisters) blind.

Diplomacy, Bah! There are two things to remember with Boudica here.

1) The men are irrelevent and will eventually die, preferably sooner than later but these things can only be rushed so much.

2) She is the Allie of here sisters until they are stupid enough to pick a fight with BIG sis!

So as long as the rest of the world understands Celtic diplomacy we should be just fine ;)

A bit of a random question but why did you give your scout guerilla 2 instead of the more conventional woodsman 2? Especially since the scout cant even use guerilla 3's withdrawal chance...

At the time I was on an unforrested hill, wounded, with an animal nextdorr. It was the best way to survive.

Update coming.

The Amazon Queen: PArt III

OK, a rather short and uneventful segment here

First of all, we finished Animal Husbandry AND....

BoudicaC0000.jpg

Boudica is very pleased!

We then went on a tangent after meditation and priesthood, at the same time building another settler

BoudicaC0001.jpg

NOW, we settled that spot because we are running out of space (Large board, but extra AIs) but also the spot remained free of jungle since the beginning of the game. Thus we settled that spot incase iron popped up. More on that later.

Meanwhile, after priesthood we started the Oracle in Bribrate getting

BoudicaC0002.jpg

We opted for Metal Casting and quickly Cathy came asking for

BoudicaC0003.jpg

Which means she has alphabet, thus we offered this trade

BoudicaC0004.jpg
Allowing us to check out the tech situation. Sure it's Russian heavy but Cathy would be demanding it anyway and we are committed to giving it to her.

Techpath for the segment went: meditiation/Priesthood/Iron Working/Currency/Code of Laws.

To get Iron Working we made this trade

BoudicaC0005.jpg

And do we have iron???

BoudicaC0006.jpg

Eurika!!! Settled right on top of it!

we made another trad ewith Cathy.

BoudicaC0007.jpg

Unfortunately Victoria came asking for this

BoudicaC0008.jpg

So we adotped the Jewish faith for a bit then revolted back to no state religion.

In Bribrate we had the Oracle, and ran 1 priest and 2 sceintists which gave us.

BoudicaC0009.jpg

Wanted the Prophet but we'll take the Scientist. We build an academy in Bribrate.

We also kept building up military, wanting to keep up those power numbers all the while teching very well, as you can see.

BoudicaC0010.jpg

So we have a monopoly on Code of Laws and Currency!

Tech options

BoudicaC0011.jpg

I saved here looking for advice. I am not often in this situation, but I think Machinery may be the best choice here! It will take 39 turns for machinery and 36 turns for Math and Construction. Very tempting here to get Crossbows and see how Sitting Bulls vaulted Dog Warriors stand up to stacks of Crossbows and Gallics!

The tech situation

BoudicaC0012.jpg

WOW!!! And here I said Boudica was a weak techer! Just to show you what can happen in the economy if you put your mind to it!

Our cities are going after some monestaries for science and some cross spreading the faith(s).

So there we have it. Do we tech machinery and bring the battle to SB, or wait until someone else stirs the pot!.

I would still rather go with Math and then Construction. Can crossbowmen inflict collateral damage like catapults? I'm just asking as I never use them.

No, they can't, unless you're not playing as China ;)

I'd prefer Catapults too, but that depends on the cultural defense of SBs cities.
What's up with that, Mad ?

And what about the dumbos (which also would require Construction/HBR) ?
A nice stack of dumbos/cats would also be nice to deal with the Natives, methinks.

Yes, I agree that construction + HBR for 'phants and cats will be the easiest way to take out the bull. Xbows will pwn doggies in the field, but you'll still have to face CG3 archers + culture in his cities.

Well I am going to be contrary here, I say aesthetics(trade for maths/maybe for construction to someone else later) - Literature(or construction if you just can't get in trade), grab great library to speed up liberalism because your economy is going to be dependent on GSes. Trade lit away.

Disadvantages of course being no monopoly on catapults, but the AI has no idea how to use siege so you will be fine.

Just noticed you don't have poly for lit yet(maybe trade for that as well)

Noticed you don't have poly, trade for it as well.

It seems to me like you broke the rules to get alphabet for metal casting. You must have turned down her request for metal casting in order to go back into the trade screen give your counter offer. This seems to directly violate rule #1.

The Amazon Queen: Part IV

Well, we opted for a little of everything with our segment again starting slowly but ending in a situation that you expect Boudica to be on a Pangea map! There is some advice I would ask for at the end, so the segment does not really "End" as one of my segments generally do!.

Let's start off with the techpath: Machinery/Construction/Fuedalism/Literature

Yes, Boudica has a one-track mind!

To start I pulled up the Military advisor

BoudicaD0000.jpg

OK, CAthy and Victoria are each others most hated civilization, leaving us out!

And we start off with a demand from one of our Sisters

BoudicaD0001.jpg

Yeah, you know who.

And quickly before she can ask for anything else

BoudicaD0002.jpg

So as we cruise towards crossbows we are one short tech from Catapults. Thus we decided to hold off attacking someone right away.

Isabella was alot more reasonable

BoudicaD0003.jpg

NOW, we have 3 of our sisters as Buddhists and the other as Jewish. Considering we do not have Buddhism (YET!) we stay with no state religion.

We swap civics

BoudicaD0004.jpg

And make another trade

BoudicaD0005.jpg

Oh, by the way. Cathy demanded machinery, Victoria demanded CoL, and Hatty demanded something I don't remember.

Here we got 5 barb Horse Archers which allowed us to get some better promoted Gallics for the upcoming wars.

Some more fillin techs

BoudicaD0007.jpg

BoudicaD0008.jpg

And then out of nowhere massive was erupted within the continent.

BoudicaD0009.jpg

All of a sudden everyone is at each others throats except Sitting Bull, Charles, and the Queen herself!

Rather than be left out of the fun, Boudica launches her army finally against the Backwards Bull

BoudicaD0010.jpg

And Diplomacy

BoudicaD0011.jpg

There, we feel better. Eventually Charles declared war on Sitting Bull also, my guess fearing the Celtic strength.

we steamrolled 2 Native American cities

BoudicaD0012.jpg

BoudicaD0013.jpg

Out first Great General

BoudicaD0014.jpg

We settled in Bribrate.

At this point we finished Literature and saved here because

BoudicaD0015.jpg

At the moment I am undecided how to proceed with the Literature wonders and the capital.

The map for the north

BoudicaD0016.jpg

OK, we clear out Sitting Bull and aim for the northern coast. That cut's the continent in half with Charles in the west and Hammurabi in the east. With no open borders I think Hammy is essentially isolated a bit.

Our cities are doing well.

BoudicaD0017.jpg

And techs

BoudicaD0018.jpg

By the way, we adopted Vassalage once we teched off Fuedalism.

Ok, a few questions here

1) Future techs: Guilds and Engineering to see how much damage we can do before the liberalism race. Also banking early will help with the economy.

2) Do we finish Sitting Bull off? A retorical question, of course we do.

3) Who to hit next, the weaker protective Charles (5 cities) or the stronger and agressive Hammurabi?

4) Now the big question, what to build where??? The Great Library can be built in 23 turns in Bribrate, likely beating all to it. This commits Bribrate to being a GP farm (well suited) and we then need the NE (again fast). Alternative we can build the HE for 13 turns in Bribrate and have a military production house at the capital.

It seems to me like you broke the rules to get alphabet for metal casting. You must have turned down her request for metal casting in order to go back into the trade screen give your counter offer. This seems to directly violate rule #1.

Cathy demanded Bronze Working which I gave her. To do this she must have had alphabet. I had Metal Casting from the Oracle and initiated the metal casting for alphabet trade. Cathy never demanded metal Casting I never said no to any of her requests.
