I'm looking at getting more involved with stategic, turn-based gaming and am evaluating Civ III, but can't seem to find answers to the most basic questions. I'm hoping someone can spare a sec to help me out.

1. Can Civ III be played with multiple players on a single non-networked PC (i.e. in the same household) taking turns competing against one another? We're not interested in on-line gaming (yet!)

2. If this is possible, what versions allow this? Seems the original Civ III release does not allow this, but we can't sort through all the various other versions out there.

3. Our primary gaming machine right now is Win98. Any significant issues playing Civ III on such a system?

Thanks in advance for your help.

1. Civ3 can be played "hotseat" mode.

2. The Play The World (PTW) expansion pack or the Conquests (C3C) expansion pack is necessary to play anything other than a single-player game. (Conquests includes all teh core PTW things, so is a better buy. ;) )

3. If you have sufficiant RAM, it should play okay.

There were alot of complaints about the multiplayer in PTW. Most of the problems were sorted out by Conquest though so that would be a better choice. Plus it contains some scenarios that are well suited to multiplayer games.

I play CIV III on a win 98 platform w/128 MB RAM (lower levels only so far) and haven't had any complaints about performance.

The only problem you might have is that large and huge maps are real memory hogs. Don't try a large map with less than 256 mb RAM, and a huge map with more than 12 civs needs 512 mb.
