RR4- Spain on a lake..... Again :p

Sorry for the delay.... I don't have time for posting a decent report now, so I' let just the save. We faced most of monty invasion without major losses and got a GG. OTOH our economy is in the toilet, by too much units ( i think I went overboard with the spears :( ). HBR in one ( monty also has it , so beware of war elephunks )

Got it, will have a look and perhaps play this evening.

a quiet set of turns building elephants and :hammer::hammer::hammer: Monty

situation at the begining

HBR in, set research to CoL for courthouses, time to build Elephants

Great prophet born in Madrid, thought about a GA but in the end built the third shrine for the Hydra

First AP election and we win :hatsoff:

Meanwhile at the front, :hammer::hammer::hammer::hammer::hammer:, comes with a very nice academy. Note that there is a barbarian city to the south which will claim iron when the border pops, i think we need this

Monty will talk now, guess it will be best to build our economy back up and then go :hammer::hammer: some more

Couple of tech/civic screens

If we continue warring we'll have to be aware of a small Monty stack close to Angle, there should be enough defenders but just take care.

i didn't :whipped: at all (i think) so that's now available for cats and phants

and with the three shrines we need to get all the religions in all the cities for maximum monies

I checked... Monty is willing to part CoL for peace. :hammer:

Hmm ... but I don't think we would grant him that. He is out of steam I believe, and we are already halfway through CoL. Nah, we shall continue pounding on you, Mr Kill-1000-slaves.

And that we did.

Somehow, he withdrew his stack near Angle, but his current forces right at the middle is decimated, earning us a general.

Which I didn't hesitate to use for a super-chariot-medic.

Remember the stack that I said he withdrew? It appeared down south, apparently he decided to go for the barb city there. Strange decision. You are at war, and in case you haven't notice, you are losing the war, and yet you go pick on someone else?

Anyway, I shadowed his forces, just in case he do a diversion and head for our southern city of Cordoba instead. And once his forces is out in the open, I hammered on it with our shadow force, and he decided to withdrew once again. Chicken! :hammer::hammer:

But that is likely because his capital is a bout to be flying the Isolationist flag :D

The bad news is he has longbow.

The good news is he has only one. :hammer:

The dont-know-good-or-bad news is he is 8 turns from CS.

Next player should be able to take the capitol in 2 turns. There after I suggest we sue for peace. We can wait for Monty to get CS (and we get CoL) if you think that there is any chance he will be willing to part CS. If so, may be we can try to capture one more city south of his capitol while we wait.

I have already started to gear down our war engine, switching away from Theology to OR. We need to jumpstart our economy again. Fortunately, we met Suryvanarman, who traded us currency.

Yeah, I know certainly some of you would frown at archery, but quite frankly, I don't give a damn at the WFYABTA. We are so backward that we won't get a lot of opportunity to trade to trigger that limit. :hammer:

With currency in, markets are ordered, and we should really start spreading Jewish and Buddhism around.

Here is the situation of our empire:

We might want to add a settler to fill in the space east of the captured ex-Aztec city (whatever-its-name-is).

and ofcourse, there are always people trying to amuse us. Cyrus tried to get us to adopt Hinduism, while our archbishops, cardinals, and patriarchs in the AP tried to convince us to go for a vote on open borders. :crazyeye:

Oh, I have only whipped once. Feel free to either whip, or revolt away from slavery.

:hammer::hammer::hammer:

It is in the queue for sometime Saturday.
I head out shortly for the night, and tomorrow is just as bad.

I hope RR will confirm I am up before then, and possibly swap in the next person can play sooner.

This is getting complicated :p

Given that we are in half team mode and that 3-persons SGs are burning to the players, I'll let things in the hands of LK and play after him.

1250 AD
After rebooting my PC Windoze finally decide to let me start Civ. I swear I can't go more then a few days without being forced to reboot with Winblows.
(IT) I skip the options from the AP.

1260 AD
I kill 3 stray units of Monty near Teot. The rest are too risky to attack.
(IT) Monty is clueless and attacks a spear with a horse, and an elephant with a horse.

1270 AD
I kill two more units of Monty near Teot.
I just notice a good chunk of our stack by Teno will suffer a river penalty, and have to delay the attack by a turn to fix it.
(IT) UGG - Zara just became a vassal of Cyrus.

1280 AD
We get the prize. :hammer: :hammer: :hammer: :hammer:

This helps our tech situation some.

The next tech is tough to call. I finally pick calendar since we need more happiness for larger cities.
Signing peace lets me up science to 20%.

1290 AD
Sury is mean, and won't give us literature. :hammer:

We are now in pure rebuild mode. :hammer:
We are at 40% science bleeding a bit of cash. I am concentrating on courts, markets and missionaries. We need to convert all of our cities to maximize income before we can go after another civ.

I don't care if some of the courts aren't that effective yet. We can't afford units at the moment, and it still prepares for a larger empire.

Nice play. Sorry, forgot to mention the river. Those on the wrong tile are moved there first before the river was discovered. I kept them there since we need to bombard, and the river cut both ways.

I am worried about a runaway Cyrus. But we can't do anything right now. We are even his worst enemy, fortunately he is quite a peaceful chap, so he probably won't declare in near future. Being isolationist, our best bet is still to hammer on Monty real quick to grab land with any hope of catching up Cyrus ... there is ofcourse danger of monty capitulating to Cyrus, but we do not have much options at hand. We should probably start to gear up for war again before Monty reach machinery (which he is clearly trying to do with Metal Casting now).

Some minor observations: We should switch tenochitilan to barracks and whip next turn ... those pops are going to whither away anyway (we could also work on the plains tile instead of hills). I think missionaries is more important than courthouse, so barcelona should switch to Jew/Bud missionary build. And I don't understand why that stupid Papaya wonder is not producing any culture?

Lurker's Comment:

That stupid Papaya wonder doesn't produce culture when it has been captured, just like every wonder. I am only assuming though that it has been captured, since I doubt you've built that youself ;)

Good luck with further military conquests :hammer:

Will save more money with a court, then we gain with a missionary. I vote to stick with courts.

As for expansion, we still have that barb city in the south with iron. :hammer: :hammer: :hammer:

Mysty: Oh really? Captured wonder produce no culture? Hmm ... never noticed that in previous games. Learn something new everyday. :hammer::hammer:

Lee: While I disagree that courthouse saves more money (partly because Barcelona is too close to capitol and partly because building a courthouse = 3 missionaries), the main reason I suggest Barcelona to build missionary first is because currently only capitol and barcelona can build bud and jewish missuses. The sooner we spread bud and jew to other cities, the sooner other cities can build them as well. But it doesn't really matter, it is not significant at all.

As to expansion/military matter, I am still with the opinion that the war against monty cannot be delayed. the faster we grab more land, the faster we can catch up in tech rate. 20% science with 10 cities is still much better than 100% science with 1 city. Time is running out because Monty is going to get metal casting and then machinery soon.

I too think we should get back to :hammer: down Mounty. Right at the moment his power is below ours but it's fast regrowing.. And as there seems to be noone else down south we may should even think about raising and later resettling his cities as we'll need the troops to conquer rather than on guard duty..

And techwise I'd purpose to go straight towards machinery as well as I'm not sure how far from maces Mounty really is...

And about court in Barca: Neither nor I'd purpose. We'll need more cats!! :hammer::hammer::hammer:

I still have to look at the save with good eyes, but definitely continuing pounding Monty is a option: he will not love us anyway, his land looks decent enough and, most important of all, we're Spain and they are Aztecs :p

BTW, got it.

Don't forget about the Barb city as a another expansion...

This was not exactly a animated set :/

After giving a good look to the save, I must agree with LK: we are in need of a economical buildup. We are backwards and have not much of land, but we have 3 shrines and a good cottage city spot.....

So, this set was pretty much making missionaries courthouses and such. We are no longer Cyrus worst enemy ( :woohoo: ) and sury entered in hands full as soon as I hitted enter.

With monty continuing his buildup and with 3 shrines in the capital city, going CS is definitely the way:
Spoiler :

I also traded for MC with Cyrus.
Spoiler :

Everyone has CoL anyway.... BTW I queued machinery. Giving that Monty is flexing up his military ( in spite of not being in hands full ) and that captured that barb city downstairs, war with him is inevitable sooner or later. Maces will help and we need machinery for our UB ( and to say the truth , there are no signs of maces in monty's land )
So, this is how i let the empire:
Spoiler :

I strongly suggest next player to revolt to Beauro ASAP.

Ad Hoc, you're UP
