Diplomacy got upgraded as Incas found the Congress on 127. Tasked to propose something, I was a bit trapped between a rock and a hard place, so I exposed my hand kind of:

After stealing Iron Working and getting Machinery, I used all gold to upgrade a total of 5 CB -> XB, Sidon gave us a CC so I push back the Horseman in Nil in favour of a University, which I chopped a bit as well. Plan is to aim for Gunpowder on the same turn as Ratio opener. I have also taken Sailing and Optics and have one extra TR ready. I suggest sending it for food to Grenoble as it will take a while for the jungle to clear out for farms. Sinai is fairly crap but some farms will improve it very soon. Nil is looking alright, perhaps a Guild would be in order to speed up culture. Musketeers should also be available pretty soon. Our shrewd diplomacy works:

to buy back an alliance with Sidon. After all is said and done, we look like this:

and now some final comments and the save

We are coming along nicely after coming back from the dead. The several XBs should be enough to defend against any surprise attacks, and I would consider sticking in a Musketeer or a few to support the XBs. I don't think we're in a position to take anyone out just yet but I'd suggest Incas and Egypt first as that side of the map also has Enrico, the perennial pushover.

Not sure when to estimate Dynamite, I suppose in the 170s range would be realistic. If Sidon keeps pumping up the CCs, that should eliminate the need for the "Pea shooter made of paper to swoop in and capture city at 1HP" unit class, while Musketeers should cover for XBs/Cannons/Arty. Getting through to (now really weak) Liz and Askia will be a trouble but that's where the team's grizzled war veterans will shine

I have queued up a Mosque/Pagoda so don't forget about that. It should come before Renaissance ups the price. Our gold is good, our science is alright, culture is a bit bad because Guilds got delayed thanks to that bad DoW we had but I like our chances. Especially if Ashur and Shaka keep fighting and nobody snowballs

I've been called away on an urgent family matter, so please skip turns for the next two weeks or so.

OK, if jagmagn or Olodune can grab the game between now and Friday afternoon (next 36 hours) they can play. Otherwise I will play tomorrow afternoon (eastern daylight time)

Advice is just make an effort to time Renaissance with Ratio opener, I guess. Then workshops and we should start cranking that army

Here's something I have never been good at. Typically I just try to get to the Renaissance as quickly as possible, then use the next social policy to open rationalization. Is there something I should be doing?

I have the game and will begin playing tonight.

Some InfoAddict-type mods help with that by displaying a countdown for your next SP rather than your base CPT. That way, you have an easier time estimating how many techs you can get away with researching before Acoustics and still get renaissance before the next SP is due.

Turn 130 – 375 AD – Things are looking good in the French Empire. We have a university completing in the capitol in a few turns, plus two crossbows. We have good cash flow. We have pretty decent science. We don’t have the smallest military, that honor belongs to Lizzy. Nevertheless, we are not strong.
We have 17 turns to the renaissance and 14 turns to the next social policy. Looks like we need more beakers somehow to do Storm Trooper’s timing.

IBT – Lizzy denounces us and I tell her she’ll pay for that in time.

Turn 131 – 400 AD – Grenoble: crossbow => workshop. I considered a university but at 15 turns it won’t help with the timing. Perhaps we’ll just buy one.

The open borders with Ramses has ended. I sell him OB for 1gpt.

IBT – Pachacuti wants to swap OB. I sell him ours for 50G. Shaka enters the renaissance and we meet Riga.

Turn 132 – 425 AD – We sell some incense to the Doge for 7 gpt.

IBT – Pachacuti wants to renew the incense for cash deal. Sure thing!

Turn 133 – 450 AD – Paris sur Nil – University => autostart on caravan. Don’t queue up builds in a SG. I let it stand.
I hire two scientists in the capitol to work at the Sorbonne. We now produce 108 beakers per turn. That get us to the renaissance before the next social policy.

Pachacuti completes the Globe Theatre and our spy tells us that the Doge is building the Forbidden Palace.

IBT -

Turn 134 – 475 AD – Steel => gunpowder (due in 9 turns, next SP in 10 turns!) I guess that’s what Storm Trooper is talking about!

Paris sur Sinai: Crossbow => workshop

Turn 135 – 500 AD - Sometime recently we turned unhappy. I was going to use the cash to buy a university, but I purchase a circus instead.

Turn 136 – 520 AD – The Doge completes the Forbidden Palace. Two extra votes for him.

IBT – Pachacuti wants a research agreement straight up. Since he probably is ahead of us in science, I say yes.

Turn 137 – 540 AD -

IBT – Sidon gives us another companion cavalry.

Turn 138 – 560 AD – Paris sur Nil: caravan => autostarts a horse. Veto that build. I select a treb.

I upgrade our last composite bow to a cross bow.

Send the new caravan to Tiwanaku for 8 gpt & 3 beakers

I now find out that a mosque was auto purchased in Paris sur Nile. :gripe: [pissed] Look if you don’t want to trust your teammates to play the game, DON’T PLAY A SUCCESSION GAME! I go and find the switch that automatically purchases a mosque and turn it off.

IBT – The Doge wants to be friends. Since we won’t be going to war with him in the next 30 turns I agree.

Turn 139 – 580 AD – Our spy comes through and we steal chivalry from our new friend.

IBT – I renew our horses for cash and gpt with Pachacuti.

Turn 140 – 600 AD – Ashy makes peace with Shaka and denounces us. Get ready for Assyrian War II.

Lizzy is taking it in the knickers at York. The city is down to yellow.

Post-flight – We should probably think about upgrading our two companion cavalry to knights since war is coming. We have three more turns where Ashy has open borders. Don’t renew that deal.

We’ll have workshop in our 2nd and 3rd cities so we can build a lot quicker. I know we have a huge “to do” list, but I think we also need to think about barracks and armories. Experienced units will help against the battle hardened units that Ashy and Shaka have. We also need the last university in Grenoble so we can build Oxford when that is appropriate.

or just use Enhanced User Interface.

Also, SORRY about the Mosque, I mentioned it in my writeup

I was really busy last week, being on vacation in Sweden and in a auto racing competition in my hometown, but I'm still interested. Is it my turn after beorn?

Some observations before I dive in:
 • Islam has taken over ; we'll get a pagoda in the capital but that'll be it. Influence in the capital is 30 for ours, 66 for islam. Just a lost cause, best we can get out of it is a pagoda in 11 turns.
 • 3 turns until gunpowder, musketeers, renaissance and rationalism. Good relief there.
 • We can upgrade the 2 CC to knights in short order
 • Our current military is looking great for a defensive ranged war. I'm of a mind to go Workshop -> (University in grenoble, Writer's guild in the capital) -> Armory -> Cannons. That's the power spike we want to nail.

Now, any suggestions for tech paths beyond gunpowder? Cannons or metallurgy first?

And how was the race, jan?

I'd go for Cannons. After workshops I don't think we need any more infrastructure so grow, musketeers and cannons and try to stomp them.

and Oxford into dynamite, natch

Yes, you'll be up next.

Sorry guys, I should've called earlier. It's been unexpectedly busy here, I'll need a skip this time.
