Ruff06 - Testing / Illustrating BUG!

Actually, I'm an aussie that just happens to live / work in NY. However, I do find it annoying when people walk slowly and slow me down. That said, I have found NY to be a very friendly town ... stop in a subway station and look at the subway map and someone will ask if you need help in less than 30 seconds.

Oh, friendly towns... Here, if you stop at the subway station and stare at the map, you can die there before someone ask if you need help! If you walk slowly, be sure that someone will just trample you!

If you guys want friendly towns, come to Italy ;)
Not to Milan, though, it is terrible. But the other towns and cities are ok :)

The only town in Italy I have been to was Trieste ... and only for a day. It was lovely, great day, huge plaza. The only funny thing was that we ordered take out coffee and then sat down in their chairs to drink it ... apparently that is a big NO-NO.

lurker's comment:
another thing to avoid there is the nunneries

isn't there a game going on here? ;) [/spam]

*** For everyone wondering why my photos look slightly different it's because I'm using the most current version of Flavorful BUG, which contains many improvements to the diversity of the Civilization. I am also using Blue Marble, another MOD which makes the terrain appear more realistic. This will continue throughout the game, and the appearance of things may change slightly as I will be updating before each game. ***

A powerful wind blew off the shore, causing the trees to sway, and then bend under its power. It signaled the beginning, for on this day the first city of a Powerful nation was born. The wind continued down the river. This river lost its force and as it continued it became slower and caused the vast plain on which it flowed to become flooded, and lush. On this place, the village was born, and they called it Kyoto.
A lone warrior crouching in the reeds, ready to protect his home, felt this wind, and knew it signaled great things. This was the Divine Wind which would protect his people, and guide them to glorious deeds! The warrior, named
Kazuki, slowly made his way through the flood pains, and entered the village that was his home. Today was an important day for the city, for they would be selecting a new Warrior from the ranks of the young men, and the Elders proclaimed they had a major announcement about the future of the village.
He entered the village, thinking if the city had walls one day; it’d be much more secure. Standing away from the rest of the population slightly, he leaned against a cherry blossom tree, and watched the last of a small play before the leader of their people approached the raised dais, and turned to the people. “Today, we embark on a great journey! No more will we all be required to search the forest for our food. One of our own has discovered a way to make the food grow where we wish! It shall take time to adapt to these new ways, and understand and learn them fully, but it shall be worth our toil in the end!”
As the crowd cheer, the Leader stepped from the dais, and with a small nod of his head motioned Kazuki to him. “Kazuki, you must explore the borders of our lands. There have been rumors of other places like this, but wanting to take what is rightfully ours. Defended our land, and ensure our children’s children shall have land of their own.” Kazuki nodded once, and without saying a word, turned and headed off towards the north…

(Turn 1)
Set Kyoto to warrior. Growth in 11, Agriculture in 10, and warrior in 8. Any Suggestions on what renaming convention we should use Ruff? I’m going to go with “Random Civ name” of “city”, unless someone wants to change it... so you may want to sync up your Renamers for this one.

Great start! I thought that I had coded up any naming convention that included "^rc^" (or the other random code) to totally ignore any other stuff in the convention. Was I wrong and my name eingine worked better than expected?

1. alerum68 - just played
2. FeedBack - up for 20 turns
3. ·Imhotep· - on deck
4. EmperorFool
5. Ruff

I didn't do it this time, because I wanted to show what the autolog looked like for everyone but from now I'm planning on writting up a small summary report with photos, and then as a spoiler I'm going to add the autolog text, so anyone wanting to see details can. I'd suggest doing the same to help keep down on post size.

First of all, great report, alerum. It's going to be hard to keep up with the good writing! I hope there's nothing on the variant that makes me write like you!
Some minor issues:
  • Your gameplay is slightly different to mine. I would have not gone Archery nor Warrior first, but it's just me. Seeing china close on the map makes it for a good historical accuracy, doesn't it? :mischief:
  • Is it mandatory to change the naming convention? I think it should be better for all of us to have any combination we like to test ruff's programming skills demonstrate the power of the naming code. What do you think?
  • Are those sites written on stone? I know we talked about the X-pattern and stuff and I haven't looked enough into the screenshot to see if this is the reason, but, let's say, one city placed one tile away of those signs would take another resource... Would it be allowed?
  • Ruff, you're a chicken! Moved yourself to the back of the roster abusing the power of the SG Leader! Well, at least it couldn't have a better timing, as I have pretty much time to play tonight. :D

I see the save, I downloaded it, but I can't say I got it because I'm at work. I'll get it and play in about... 10 hours. Until them, would you please post some directions to me? :mischief:

I moved my self to the bottom because I has modified the map slightly in WB and didn't want my map knowledge to affect the game. The city signs are based on minimizing the distance expenses. Cities have to go where the signs say or we don't take max advantage of this minimization. Being Japanese, I think that we must take max advantage.

The archery move was also because we are playing like Tokuwaga ... very conservative!

Thanks Feedback, and yes you must write a story on your first round.:p

About the city placement...That's not quiet true. It's not like the old RCP where if you had 1 city out of place, it would mess up everything. As long as it's 4 tiles or less from the capital it'll be the same, doesn't matter if it's in rows or not. And if you do have 1 city out of place, it only added a little bit of maintenance. If there is a resource that is 1 tile away, I say it's worth going for it!

pretty sure I disagree with alerum here. 1 city out of place could push another city out of place. Further, it would destroy the beautiful harmony that will be the Japanese empire.

But this is an SG and people will disagree.

But this is an SG and people will disagree.

People at work call me the else, as I'm always the one who disagrees with all the other team members. I'm used to it.

Now that I brought the subject and already caused a little chaos, I think we should let this discussion for when it really matters. Maybe ruff edited the map for this not to occur. :mischief:

lurker's comment: Just a minor point but why does it say DEAFULT against Combat[AIR] in the first screenie rather than DEFAULT? Simple typo? More to the point will the default naming convention for air units work correctly?

Maybe ruff edited the map for this not to occur. :mischief:
Did I say there was a little map editing? Well, I did ... that is one reason why I moved myself down the list. Do you want the truth? Can you handle the truth?

Spoiler :
I linked up our future city sites by river and that was it (I think). I rolled this up about 2.5 weeks ago and I have forgotten.

lurker's comment: Just a minor point but why does it say DEAFULT against Combat[AIR] in the first screenie rather than DEFAULT? Simple typo? More to the point will the default naming convention for air units work correctly?
Good catch. As far as I know, DEAFULT will cause the unit to be named 'DEAFULT'! Apart from some special situations (code for standard civ naming or either random version), the code scans and replaces some elements. Anything it doesn't recognize, it leaves in.

Actually Ruff, it was a typo on my end. I don't like the somewhat cheesy names to show what type of unit is built, (birdie for example.) so I cleared it out, and typed DEFAULT in each line, with a typo in one of them. Will fix it on my end, but it's not that way in BUG.

Ok, I`m searching the thread looking for the line that requires me to tell a story but I haven't found it yet. I'm sorry, alerum.. This isn't easy for me...

Adding a disclaimer: I use Blue Marble too, but I don't use FBUG. :)

Let's start showing how the units I make will look like:
ruff06unitnamingscreendt0.jpg

So, it's like one of the old Ruff mod options... Unit X of city, where X is a roman number.

I know nobody here is dumb, but I added this anyway:
ruff06optionstabhr4.jpg

If you have already configured your BUG mod, you may uncheck that option. :)

In the next screenshot you can see the Civ4lerts acting:
ruff06civ4lertspp8.jpg

And the scoreboard that EF almost made from scratch. Maybe he can show it in more depth later!

Ok, enough showcasing. I set the building into a granary, than changed to a setler when the city grew to size 4, let the worker finish the farm, woke up the warrior for a greater circle recon around our borders (only to see a little into the second ring) and let the tech flow into:
ruff06miningny6.jpg

Set the research into Bronze Working and ordered two cottages in the floodplains next to the farm. Then, in my 15th turn I got this message:
ruff06questzv1.jpg

What are we gonna do about it? I say ignore it. 10 chariots are a little too much if not going to war. The settler is ready:
ruff06bluecirclesry5.jpg

Weird enough, all our city sites are one tile away from the blue circles!

Even not knowing where copper is, I recommend settling here:
ruff06proposedcityly4.jpg

There's a weird grassland that gives 5 food :crazyeye: and the gold that will help research.

I know I was up for 20, but it felt right to stop here. Next player can take my extra 5 if wanted!

Save is attached.

See what happens if you edit the map ... you get a floodplain on a grass land (food=5). Can someone WB the floodplain away ... I will not be home until tomorrow night or I would do it myself.

3. ·Imhotep· up baby, ... up!
4. EmperorFool - on deck (is this a first ever?)
5. Ruff (kicking himself for poor map editing!)

Was just teasing about the story FB.:p Good turns all around... had a feeling something strange like the +5 food tile would appear with even slight editing with WB. Oh well, to late to now...

Are you suggesting settling on the marked City Spot, or the Game suggested spot?
