One crisp October morning, Tokugawa came to his nephew and spoke of a plan to venture west to explore the unknown. In his place, the nephew would look over the kingdom but leave all decisions to Tokugawa's wise ministers.
Alas, the nephew was young and rash, and the ministers often referred to him as Emperor Fool behind his back. "It will be up to history to judge me fairly," he mused.
We shall see . . .
While scouting the borders of the vile Chinese, Kazuki made a disturbing discovery.
When they attack, they will be wielding fearsome metal weapons. Best that we begin our defenses now.
But not all is bad news. Our farmers and hunters have worked together to tame the local beasts.
And they've even found a certain breed that will prove more useful in the fields than in our bellies.
As fears of the barbarians to the south grew, talk of expansion north toward the unexplored jungles turned to action. Without his uncle's charisma, Emperor Fool was unable to quell the fear, and so a train of settlers left Kyoto to found Tokyo.
EF was always dreaming, and it was with delight that he heard the news of a method for sharing his dreams with others.
And soon the leaders of the other tribes sent forth emissaries seeking writs of agreement to enter our lands freely. Filthy peasants! EF sent them on their way.
BUG Highlight: We added some new alerts to Civ4lerts, one of which tells you when AIs become willing to sign Open Borders agreements.
As his advisors are fond of telling EF, "Good. Bad. Who knows?" Not long after discovering a method of building more durable structures . . .
. . . the slaves put to work using that knowledge revolted. EF wanted to ignore the problem, but his advisors convinced him it would be better to invest a small sum in order to put down the revolt.
Apparently, some of the families preparing to expand our empire sympathized with the slaves, and it took some time to placate everyone and get them back to work.
News from EF's wandering uncle reached Osaka. Though the west is a barren wasteland, beyond it lies a vast ocean full of wonderful creatures.
And without warning a barbarian party swarms over the nearby hills and attacks the men EF had sent to watch over the south-eastern lands. When will they learn it is pure folly to rise up against us?
What is this? News of a people so foolish they allow a
woman -- nay, a
temptress! -- to lead them.
The lands beyond our sight are strange indeed, and these Spanish might just be interesting enough to earn our friendship . . . in 1000 years maybe. For now, however, they can gawk at our wonders from outside our borders like everyone else!
Some final news from Tokugawa and Kazuki: the wasteland, though vast, is not endless. And at its border they have discovered a rich cache of fine stone. Perhaps some day our borders will extend far enough such that we could use it to build a stairway into the heavens!
----------
Mathematics is on the way (for chopping), Osaka is building the Great Wall to keep out the vile hordes, and a Settler should pop out of Kyoto in a turn or two.
We should start planning which city locations are best suited for comm or prod. Osaka looks great for both. Normally I'd go comm there (gold and spices, FPs), but it also probably has the best possibility of prod. The downside for prod is that it will be on our rear border with the ocean to the west.
I sent that archer southeast to start pressing our border to China as well as grab the rice/cow, but feel free to settle elsewhere. My normal inclination is to expand toward the AIs and save the backyard for later (as much as we can with our expansion rules).

So, how'd I do for my first time?
