Well, things look groovy so far. We're about to snag Liberalism and have a decent sized army. Our neighbors do not like us altogether, buit that is as it should be in this variant. The GreyFox very wisely pointed out that Izzy is amassing troops in her border city. Maybe she wants to prevent it flipping, but you'll never know what she is up to. As we can see into her cities thanks to our Espionage I devise a plan . But that needs some preparation as our main army stands south, waiting for orders to destroy the Chinese. Therefore the tech situation gets some attention first.
Our hopes of getting something more valuable out of the Liberalism free tech are somewhat limited. Thanks to our Espionage we can see that Saladin is on the verge for Lib himself. Hi discovers Education the same turn we're just one turn away from Liberalism. The screen shows he needs only 7 turns to research it, so there is not enough time to research are prereq tech instead first. Moreover Bismarck can reseearch Lib too, and we don't see his research efforts due to our lack of EP spending. Therefore I decide to go with Liberalism immediately and not risk it with a gamble.
And we get it of course.
As free tech I choose Printing Press. The common move would have been Nationalism, but as we don't have Marble the Taj is an expensive wonder to build. Moreover we have Villages and Towns. Lots of 'em. So my choice falls on Printing Press. With staggering results, our GNP skyrockets from +15 @ 50% to +30 @ 50% - that's double ! Sweet !
I then adjust our EP spending - away from Isabella and towards Khan and Roosey. You know what's coming, don't you ?
Well, as Izzy has her main army all in this border city, the best way to ensure it threatens us no longer is wiping it out. I know that wars are major game decisions needing consensus with the team, but the chance presented was to good to let it pass, and moreover this is only Prince. Also Saladin was occupied by two AIs in the north, so I grasped the window of chance and told the nut where she can stick it...
The battle for the city brought us another GG, I settled him in our HE city. Maybe a Medic III unit would have been the better use, but I guess this is not the last GG we get.
One thing to be aware of: Roosey is in WHEOOH mode. Maybe he is going after Izzy too, or Khan gets on his nerves. Or he comes after us...
Stalin had declared on Saladin earlier (who is dogpiled now) and wanted us to join. No, thanks.
After two turns of warfare it was accomplished. The city was taken and razed into the ground. With it all of Izzy's main army is gone, her core is now lightly defended. We only have lost some Cats and a Samurai at high odds *argh*.
The next of Izzy's cities fell at the cost of 2 Samurai's shortly later. Burn, baby, burn.
I then wanted to continue wirth driving into Izzy's core, but Saladin's borders expanded, and we don't have OB with him. Very annoying ! So I had to go round the mountains, giving Izzy some relief...
KK wanted OB. Now I think he is not a friend, so I declined...
After PP I had researched Banking and Gunpowder. Muskets are good city defenders with CG II, moreover they can ignore the ridiculous Castle bonus.
The next player can happily drive into Izzy's very weak core. Our units are not fully healed, but that should be no problem. Unless she hides a big stack somewhere there is not much that can resist us. Now that we've completed the ring we may keep her better cities, or is that ruled out ?
We also have a healthy tech lead over the AI. We could trade for Economics at some point, for now I've set research to Replaceable Parts, heading for Rifling (no beakers invested yet). The state of the world:
Izzy is willing to talk peace, she will give a lousy 220 gold + 9 gpt and her map.
My military record:
Battle Stats: Units victorious while attacking : 32 Units victorious while defending : 0 Units defeated while attacking : 8 Units defeated while defending : 0
Not too bad . Also spies are getting a bit annoying despite our stationary spies in the cities, those sluggards do no real preventing...
Imhotep

Pretty good turns, let's finish Izzy ... However, I suspect that will cause a new "enemy" to take her place. But we would probably get by without needing to declare since it is less probable for any new cities planted at this stage to be able to steal tiles from our cities.
Nice work Imhotep (dotless because I cannot find that key). I'm not sure about the right way forward. The variant means that we cannot keep any of the cities. We can plant a second ring (see this thread for city locations - someone will have to work out a grid for us) but we need to clear out all of the AI culture taint before we start. I'd be tempted to take the peace offering and leave Isabella in place as a buffer against any other AI expansion.
BTW, KK is a little way off so we are his friend. Stalin is further away so we are his buddy.
Do we have to accept any request by Stalin (like the war request), or do we merely lean that way?
By "clear out the cultural taint" do you mean we have to completely clear the whole ring before planting a new city, or only clear out wherever we plant? I ask because it might be tough to stamp out all culture from 3 AIs at once without one of them plopping down a new crappy suburb. Keep in mind that Izzy surrounds us all the way over the top (part of it is Saladin I think directly above) and over to the West.
I agree with keeping Izzy alive. If we remove her entirely, the other AIs will only get stronger taking up her old land. Better a weakened nutcase we can slap around if we ever need some entertainment, like Qin (though I am in favor of carving a slice off of him).
This SG will have two aims. The primary aim is to showcase the brand new BUG mod ... The second aim is to help Tokugawa regain his organized days. This will be done by strategic placement of cities. We will be placing our first 8 cities in a ring around our capital to minimize distance maintenance expenses. I've marked them on the map already. Our second ring of cities (if we get that far), will be placed to also minimize expenses.
<snip>
In this vein, we cannot start our second ring of cities until there is clear room to plant a city and have it expand to its Big Fat Cross.
I think that we just look favorably at it. The further away they are, the more likely we are to accept. If they actually like us in the game (rather than just via this variant), the we are even more likely.
Our buddy Bismark asked me for 380 gold and got it. Lizzy asked too - NO WAY. I think that we need to help a friend if he is in danger of getting destroyed. If he is just on a rampage, then good luck to him ... we will cheer from the sidelines.
I started off not realizing we're at war. (note to self: READ SGs before you fill in on them )
So, in 1685, after founding an Academy:
and a crummy event:
I attack:
Next turn, there was an AP vote:
Bismarck won.
We got ANOTHER event:
However, a couple turns later in 1615:
Sally wanted us to give in:
while Qin wanted us as well:
I was SO close to saying yes, but in the end, Sally's 0.6 power rating was a strong deterrent (and thus my BUG feature ).
Before I ended, i razed one more city: Barcelona, on the way to Madrid. Here's the army waiting to move next turn towards there:
And here's a GG:
He's waiting for an explorer to finish to make a Medic to continue the fight into Spain more. Thus, our army can move on next turn!
I didn't take peace yet (since I wasn't sure WHY we were in war), but here's the deal:

Ruff (up but looking for swap with EF)
Pholk - why the walls and castle? Do they actually give any benefit (except +x% on defense?). And I noticed you started a settler. I'll look into working out our second ring of cities and see if we really want to push that far.
well, we ARE Protective, and it seems fitting w/Toku. Also, w/the upgrade to them both (halving siege attacks), I like them more.
'Twas a "hold on, kids; i'm almost done" sort of set
for settlers, I marked a couple cities using a rule of thumb: 3 horizontal/vertical spaces or 2 diagonal from existing cities ~ see what you think of them
Regarding castles, they provide an extra trade route. Since we're on offense, their defensive bonus is useless.
Yes, I suspect Saladin will be eying us as soon as his war with Qin is over. Granted, much of his 0.6 power ratio is probably due to having more cities, but we should be wary of our northern border.
Sadly, my video card is being a PITA. Either DirectX or the card itself is borked, and it'll be a while before I have the time/energy to reinstall XP to fix it. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the driver several times with worse results each time.
Holy moly - what a bad captain. I completely forget about this. Anyone want to grab this game - I will try and put in a few turns tonight if no one has snapped it up.
Here is the minimum distance city location for ring 2.
We have some options with the second ring cities regarding final placement. Obviously, we cannot settle all the coloured tiles shown above, but we can move cities around a little. Naturally, these small movements will have some flow on effect on the other possible city locations.
I've played my set - report up tomorrow some time.
Again, only a quick report - no time for much else ...
things of note ...
peace with Bella - picked up optics
looked at 2nd ring city placements - took a while to get the diagram right so I haven't updated the game - pholkhero's suggestions where not minimum maintenance distance (deleted)
upped the income from wine
traded printing press to Bismark for Econ, world map, 70 gold
traded printing press, liberalism to Roosevelt for Nationalism, world map
received some extra cash for a new breed of race horses - ohhhhhhh
woke up the workers and rebuilt the sheep pasture
settled the GG - we don't need a medic as this shouldn't really be a war focused SG - that said, don't really know what our victory target is ... space?
missed stopping the explorer build - so we have an explorer with 9XPs sitting around
The biggest thing that I did was stop our research. I put in a few turns on spying so that we can see what the top AIs are researching. MM'ed the apportionment of spying to get the AIs 'over the line' re seeing their research. It also helped stop their spy activities at home. I don't have a screenshot of the scoreboard showing what they are researching - oops.
peace with Bella ...
Upped the gold income for our wine ...

happy birthday to pholkhero, 29 ... babe in arms.
My BUG feature - you can turn all of the features off and just run the logger silently in the background - the game doesn't show that BUG is running at all except that the era in the clock flashes when you change the science (or similar) rates.
