Ruff08 - The AI Shuffle

Wow - didn't realize that crappy Japanese city was so far away. I might sell it to someone during my turn.

Good point, without mininc corp, or slavery , or US, this city is useless ;) (no way of building anything).

In my opinion that city is exactly in spirit of this game and should be kept by all costs :p. Like Ralph said, we got to have one of those pointless maintainance killers!

arrrGGGGGGGG - other leaders are starting to annoy me. I must be getting old. That bearded guy is squashing some of our beautiful cities ... that makes me mad! Not as mad as this ...

 Yes, but now I have evidence! Let us dance, you and I :D.

A Mine was destroyed near Rheims <- our gems again. I wonder who ... NOT!

In other news ...

well, there is 'like' and then there is someone who actually helps you. What has beard-in-rollers done for us?

Firstly, this game looks like it is in the bag. There are lots of things to like but a few things that are starting to annoy me. Boudica, our BFF is a great Gal. Sure, she isn't helping in our little tiff with the Americans, but that is ok as we are doing pretty well there.

Boudica: Friendly (+12)
Spoiler :

• woman [+1]
• Hot _and_ has a crush on me [+2]
• France has always had a soft spot for the celts [+1]
• Gave help [+1]
• Fair Trading [+3]
• Open Borders [+1]
• Shares religion [+3]
• Shares resources [+1]
• not French [-1]
Our other 'Friend', Hammurabi, is not helping either - but he is starting to annoy me.

Worst of all - he is not letting our glorious Military capital shine. We really must have a talk to him about that.

Ruff08-0220.jpg

Hammurabi: Unknown Quantity (0)
Spoiler :

• shares our religion [+3]
• Open Borders [+1]
• Fair Trading [+2]
• Gave into our demands [+2]
• not French [-2]
• thinks we are small [-1]
• Close Borders bring tension [-5]
I did a tour of our cities and re-assigned some tiles. Some of these ex-Japanese cities are ok, but will not be able to produce much. Kyoto, on the other hand will shortly be a monster. I put the Moai Statues in there as well as giving that city the grasslands copper mine and another hill. Once it grows back to full size, it will be able to work all of its mines and the production coming from there will be awesome. I swapped Sapporo away from its fishing boat build (30 turns) to a light house (building / unit / building requirement is relaxed for this fishing village - unless we can painless swap to slavery and whip something here). I build a 2 turn workboat in Kyoto and sailed it down to the other fish resource (7 turn trip).

I also played around with a BUG feature - in city view, I selected 'Food' yields and 'worked tiles' to find that Satuma did not have enough food to work all of its beautiful elephants. I farmed over 1 or 2 cottages, irrigating the rice there and now it has 27 food to feed the people to work its 14 city tiles (sure, that is 1 food short - but Biology is just around the corner and that will solve that problem).

Ruff08-0234.jpg

Another example: Atlanta which was in revolt was using a Banana and a Workshop tile - for nothing. I gave those two tiles to Los Angeles who could do with them. LA needs some worker work but will have to wait as we just got ...

Ruff08-0245.jpg

I also burnt the Great Spy against Zara Yaqob and ran 4 or 5 spies into one of his cities. I mis-clicked and stole Corporation without waiting for the 5 turn stationary bonus. At least it opens up Assembly Line (currently running 0% science to build up some cash for a run at it).

On the War Front - we captured Harappan for the loss of 1 unit and Washington for the loss of some siege. The war anger is also getting high so some cities build jails and we also swapped to Police State. We are now running Police State: Free Speech: Caste System: State Property and Organized Religion. Emancipation is not open to us and I didn't want to take the additional turn of anarchy swapping to Free Religion.

I think a nice little mini-goal here would be to have the following civics ...

 • Police State
 • Free Speech
 • Emancipation
 • State Property
 • Free Religion

Here is my suggested battle plan for the rest of America ...

Ruff08-0249.jpg

We have some units en-route to Boston. The other units (with GG Medic) are healing up on Washington. I would then move them down the Western yellow line and take out those three cities. Other units are being produced and making there way towards the front (concentrated on Cavalry and Cannons). You will notice that I am leaving New York. Here is the reasoning for this ...

 • finish off non-NY America mainland cities
 • End the war with America (Capitulation and, hopefully, Democracy)
 • That would leave America with New York and Portland (small island city down South)
 • Prepare (ie move units to Etheopean front - but away from NY) and then declare on Zara
 • Zara takes NY
 • We move in and catch most of his forces in NY - slaughter!

Things to note ...
 • There are 2 workers off the coast of Kyoto who are railroading and lumbering (?) the forests there - there is also a Galleon to being them back to the mainland when they are finished
 • I think the other workers (we only have 9 - is that enough) are free to rail road towards the front

Also, one of our workers thinks he is a lemming - you know, the digger variety ...

Ralph

OK Turns played and it all got quite interesting when Zara sneak attacked us with a not unimpressive stack of Curaisseurs and cannons.....

Report will go up tomorrow as I am knackered!!

Ralph

Well Ruff laid out an excellent pre play plan of:-

1. Accumulate cash for a 100% assembly line run
2. Sneaky take down Americas back lines and looking for a capitualation with Democracy thrown in for good measure
3. Then set up New York as a lightning rod for Zara’s stacks when we declare on him.

It was a good plan, in fact a very good plan but perhaps too good a plan ???

Initially things progress swimmingly until the first flaw in the plan is revealed. That major flaw was when we encountered our first IBKAC problem.

What’s an IBKAC problem, you ask … some new wonderful Civ Acronym you haven’t encountered perhaps…. Some masterful AI strategy gleaned from years of dutiful scrutiny of obscure XML files in the bowels of Civ perhaps ??

Spoiler :
No it is actually an “Idiot Between Keyboard and Chair” as that plan requires me to remember to switch back to 100% research at the right time and I actually leave it 2 turns too much. But it does mean that not only does the next player have infantry available but I have already accumulated the cash they need for some Rifle to Infantry upgrades..

As I said initially things went great as we followed Ruff’s invasion plan capturing Philadelphia

capphil.jpg

Soon to be followed by San Francisco.

capfrisco.jpg

So just as I am happily starting to research AL Roosevelt capitulates to Zara who promptly of course declares war and sends a non –trivial stack to our back lines.

naughtyzara.jpg

Here is where I begin to realize the real major flaw in Ruff’s plan - in that it was a far far too good plan and we are being punished with a SID (Superior Intelligence Disaster) response.
Running 100% cash ready for a 100% research run at a tech.
Nope the AI would never do it.
Setting up a city like New York as a killing ground for a future opponents stack.
Nope the AI would never be clever enough to do that

So what’s the only way to our redeem ourselves from the SID Issue???

Yes it is time to start behaving like the AI would… What does that mean? Well how about trading for Democracy and immediately making the Civic Switch in mid war. :lol:Yes that does feel much more appropriate.

democtrade.jpg

Admittedly the Emancipation unhappiness was an issue so we did gain from it but I did feel much more in theme “Revolting” whilst puzzling out what to do about Zara….:D

And lo and behold it worked and things started getting back under control. We did lose Washington for a turn but have recaptured it and I am afraid Zara still has Atlanta

sneakyattack.jpg
.

But stage 1 of paying him back is complete with the Capture of Yeha

capyeha.jpg

His big stack up north isn’t actually that much of a threat with Machine Gun Defenders in place and the cash to upgrade rifles to Infantry if desired.

endforce1.jpg

We are close to finishing off America’s back lines although obviously he retains New York on the Mainland at the moment.

seatttleforce.jpg

And we have a force that when upgrade to Infantry / cannons (did I mention we have a fair bit of cash?) can do him some severe damage.

yehaforce.jpg

On the relationship front Boudi seems to have discovered a very dodgy younger brother from Spawning a Colony…

khancolony.jpg

We are really disliking Hammurabi as he has asked for our Girlfriends protection. Just not on…

Other than that we either don’t care or hate everybody…
