Late Renaissance, Epic game speed, Harald Bluetooth DoWs on me. One of my allied CS is on Harald's southern border and it DoWs on him. Harald and I slug it out for a few turns and, when it becomes clear that I have the advantage, Harald offers peace on very favorable terms. I accept. So far, so good - except that my CS ally continues pounding on Harald. And it's doing a heck of a job. It takes the adjoining CS that was allied with Harald, one of his cities, and shows no sign of slowing down.

There's nothing in the CS screen that enables me to call off the CS. I contact Harald, open the Trade screen, and open up the "Other Players" menu to try the "Make peace with..." - only it informs me that he and my ally are not at war. My ally goes on pounding Harald for at least six more turns before peace breaks out.

I'm just wondering if I missed something. Is there a way to make a an allied CS cease warring? Why did the "Other players" screen show that Harald wasn't at war with my allied CS?

Well if you checked the "other players" thing and it was greyed out for peace that means the city state went permanent war with him. At that point i don't think you can stop it.

Yeap, and Harald IS a warmonger. Man. I hate that.. really ticks me off when somebody attacks somebody I'm allied to. I'ts ok for it to do once because i can force him to make peace.. but when he decides to attack second time it's like really annoying, because the perma war is initated and nothing can be stopped, often seeing my ally being taken over!

Thank you! Harald had DoW'd more than once. That would explain the permawar condition. It was ironic, though, because my ally was a Cultural CS. Harald's was a Militaristic one. After my ally swallowed up Harald's it hammered him mercilessly.

Side note: this was the first time I've seen one CS vanquish another one. The vanquished one remained under the same name on the map, but if you clicked on it you got the screen for the winner.

Same when you conquer Copenhagen, you click on it, ou won't get Harald, but yourself (or.. just a popup if you wanna Annex the city )

Yes, I had one. In my game as Greece, I DoWed France since he was getting to be a runaway civ. At that point, I only had a few bombers and captured Chartres which bordered me. By that time, Bucharest took over two of France's cities, and took Tenochtitlan a few turns afterwards. Surprised that it took over that many cities, I bombed some more surrounding cities to see if the CS would capture more, but their military just sat idle. I think that the only way the CS could expand so quickly was because France was preoccupied with Florence, an ally to the south, which they counqured. I have a pic I will upload later.

I had one game where two adjacent CSes were both allied with me, but were at permanent war with one another and kept throwing their units away attacking each other rather than Harun or his allied CS, which irritated me.

On the bright side, if one of them wins, you only have to pay just one city state instead of two for the luxuries :D

This should probably be in the closely historical games thread, but:

There was a hilarious game where my allies Kuala Lumpur and Singapore started off north and south of each other, borders touching, and both of them requested me to intervene in their little dispute. It eventually escalated into a shooting war between the two, and due to terrain, none of them were able to make any headway except by shooting each other up.

If the CS is close enough to your territory and you can spare the units, just surround the CS. However much it gets bombarded the AI will never be able to take it without killing your units. Works for me.
