SAN FRANCISCO - In a political and legal challenge to California law, city authorities officiated at the marriage of a lesbian couple Thursday and said they will issue more gay marriage licenses.

The act of civil disobedience was coordinated by Mayor Gavin Newsom and top city officials and was intended to beat a conservative group to the punch.

The group, Campaign for California Families, had planned to go to court on Friday to get an injunction preventing the city from issuing marriage licenses to gay couples.

Longtime lesbian activists Phyllis Lyon, 79, and Del Martin, 83, were married just before noon by City Assessor Mabel Teng in a closed-door civil ceremony at City Hall, mayor's spokesman Peter Ragone said. The two have been a couple for 51 years.

Ragone said that beginning at noon, officials would begin issuing marriage licenses to any gay couples applying for one.

79 & 83.....

That is quite something!

How is stopping these people from marrying gonna benefit famlilies?

For an explanation of their use of the world "Families" see #1 in col's thread on dishonest argument tactics.

Hey, this is great!!! It means the States is not quite so backwards as I had previously though in the area of Civil Rights.

Good for you, Neighbours!!!

Well, San Francisco has the fame of beign the "gayest" city in the world, so this hardly comes as a surprise. ;)

I liked the quote Hakan had about love being a nonrenewable resource.

"So you see - if we don't prevent gay marriage, there won't be enough love left for us normal people to get married!" :ack:

Can you believe it, a couple living faithfully together for fifty years and they can't get married. Meanwhile the heterosexual divorce rate is skyrocketing. I wonder what the median marriage length is.

Because they'll turn us all gay and ultraliberal!....Somehow....

It's not really my business since I am not a homosexual. But I really don't see the harm in it.

Gay and full of liberals from what I've heard. The kind of fools who hang out at Indymedia and other cesspools of stupidity.

Sometimes, authority needs to be question, even apposed.

My message the state/federal officials who will try to ban San Francisco's right to make marriage equal for all Americans: BRING IT ON!!! Take us(San Franciscans) to court! The law segregating(banning) gay marriage will be found unconstitutional.

the heathenistic San Franciscan hippies shall burn in the firey depths of HELL!:saiyan: (for some reason i get the urge to do that every time some religous nut group opposes marriage). In my opinion, the so-called Campaign for California Families has a hypocritical name, since it obviously doesn't support families.

I prefer the term critical. I used Indymedia as an example of the extreme depths of depravity people can plunge to when they use obscene amounts of moral relativity to defend murderers and dictators. Little things like suicide bomber fanfiction and waxing poetic about the wishywashy history of the great Palestinian empire the Jews invaded.

Whatever euphemism you like, it's become quite obvious that you have something to say about every group in every thread. So when's your piece on the white male?

What do suicide bombers have to do with homosexual marriage?

By the way, Bill Frist said no matter what outcomes will be in MA or in SF, Congress will get involved every step of the way. He fears that "activist" judges will rule in favor of this in every single state (not bloody likely, but he can dream). After that, it's only a matter of time before we all turn gay and liberal and die and then the terrorists will have won! Noooo!

For all the cheers, you do realize that they're not actually married unless CA changes their laws?
