Hi, I've been playing civ since the original on my uncles computer, but haven't really played much since civ3 kinda put me off. I've been getting back into it with civ 4, but am finding it quite difficult. I am most experienced with civ 2, and find millitary conquest very difficult. Beyond very basic difficulty, you have to spend absolute hordes of units to get progress against the AI, who seem to cheat their way to men even at noble levels of difficulty (although this may be me being paranoid- I was actually going for a diplomatic victory on noble and got bogged down in the longest war ever against china who sent an endless stream of horse archers/elephants at me). I find that once I hit calvary war tends to get much much easier, but before that it's incredible slow going.

There is no AI cheating involved on Noble and below. Even on higher levels the AI does get only a small discount on producing troops - it gets high discounts on upgrades and troop maintenance however.

Meaning that you should be able to produce at least as many troops as the AI does. If you are not able, there are several reasons possible...

1) You did not developed your cities - if your cities have to work unimproved tiles, you need more workers. Also you should devote some cities to troop production only, trying to maximize the hammer output.

2) You diverting to much production towards other stuff: Wonders are most common. The Piramides are worth 7 Axemen if you have stone. More without stone. Make sure you need them. Same with City improvements. The Troop cities mentioned above do not need Libraries for example.

Whipping troops can often help you out of misery, if you have been attacked while unprepared. Whipping is also good, to build enought troops before beeing attacked in first place.

There are many other things - hard to cover everything. Try to look for example games at the Forums. Sisiutils ALC's are good. He also writen a good guide for beginners - i think it is linked in his signature.

Are you checking your combat odds before each attack? When I first started playing Civ 4, I spend most of my first combat experiences learning out to up my combat odds, meaning I basically self-taught myself how to use stacks, siege, and promotions effectively. Striving to get >99.9% odds--even if you never get there--is a good way to improve your war game.
