Schweitzes Reich: The Swiss Empire (MeM)

Cool, I'm the Graf of Zurich, with a pleasant view of the beautiful Inn Rivier! Hot diggity-dog!

It's a personal thing. You see when I was a mere child of 14, I left my appendix in Innbrück. (True story! I've always wondered what they did with it, like if there's a giant warehouse somewhere in Austria where all the extracted appendices are stored in 20 foot tall shelves full of formaldahydy smelling mason jars).

sure but you could have kissed up like real switzerland  (no offence to the swiss among us :D)

Hoo boy, where to start... First of all, I'm of Swiss-German descent... Second, the Swiss people are not only the most stubborn people on the face of the planet (trust me, I know), but they were (in)famous for producing the most feared mercenary armies in all of Europe during the late middle ages... If your opponent had a couple companies of Swiss Pikemen, then you might as well forget it!

The only time Swiss neutrality has ever been violated in the nations 800+ year history was when NAPOLEON invaded it, but his occupation government lasted less than a year!

Even during WWII, when every nation surrounding it was either Fascist or occupied by fascists, Switzerland was STILL able to maintain its independence and neutrality, mainly because Hitler didn't want to invest the time and resources it would take to conquer it until he completely overran the rest of Europe!

So, yeah, the Swiss aren't wimps, far from it, in fact... Hell, they have more guns per capita than TEXAS!

Hey,

Subscribed.

Good to see the Immortal(?) Doktor Frankenstein.

Glad you liked it... I try to maintain at least SOME of my "advisers" throughout my various stories. ;)

Kapitel 4: Der Heilige Romishce Reich
Chapter 4: The Holy Roman Empire

(Note: I'm reducing chapters to 50-year installments from here on out, to keep post size manageable. Maps will still come every 100 years.)

Spoiler :
AD 1002: Workers complete construction of a road from Basel to the nearby Salt deposits, and are now working to extend it to the main trade network at Schwyz...

AD 1008: The city of Winterthur is founded on a narrow strip of unclaimed land along the coast of Lake Geneva, right next to Aragon's capital province.

WinterthurFounded.jpg

Thanks to having to extend a road over the mountains to get our Settlers into position to found the city, we now have a viable trade route with the Kingdom of Aragon!

AD 1010: Dr. Frankenstein reports that our wise men and farmers have mastered the fine points of Horse Breeding (which allows us to construct Stables in our towns with Horses in the radius that will allow us to produce veteran troops from said towns) and that his Alchemists will be researching a system of Currency with our top merchants.

HorseBreeding.jpg

Herzog Beinbrech has his ambassador to Aragon arrange a trade of Horse Breeding for Civil Law, which will allow us to better govern our populace by constructing Gallows in our towns (make them think twice about stealing money and supplies from construction projects!)

Korpskommandant Sephiroth von Niebelheim, our military adviser, reports that the last company of Spearmen has been upgraded to Mercenary Guards, which will HOPEFULLY make the Castillians and Danes think twice about attacking us again!

AD 1212: The Amber Trader in Bern produces a Shipment of carved Amber, which is promptly shipped to Schwyz and sold off for 250 Gold.

AD 1014: Basel is finally connected to the Confederation's sprawling trade network... Fine Salt from Basel is now available at the commodity markets in the rest of the Confederation, and luxury goods from the rest of the Cantons are now available in Basel.

AD 1016: St. Gallen's sphere of influence expands, increasing the Canton's territory.

AD 1018: St. Gallen finishes construction of its Gold Mine... Soon Gold Shipments will be flowing into Schwyz (The Swiss Confederacy in this timeline looks to rival Venice and Florence at their height as a trade empire!)

AD 1020: Our workers get a road built to one of the Horse herds in the Confederacy... Korpskommandant Sephiroth says it's about damn time!!!

AD 1022: Basel finally establishes a Salt Trader, which makes Markgraf Arexander happy since the increased trade will boost the city's prosperity.

SaltTrader.jpg

Elsewhere, the influence of Thun and Lucerne expand, bringing more territory under Swiss control. :D

AD 1024: Dr. Frankenstein reports that our alchemists and merchants have developed a standardized Currency for the entire Confederacy, and that he's now talking with political analysts on techniques for Empire Control. (Empire Control allows the Empire government as well as a Varangian Guard GW that produces powerful, but immobile, Varangian Guard units every 12 turns).

Currency.jpg

As if THAT isn't enough good news, the Pope, after careful consideration, declares Switzerland to be the one, true Holy Roman Empire! He even gifts us the secrets of Empire Control and Steel working as part of the deal!

HRE2Techs.jpg

This event kicks off what most historians call the Golden Age of Switzerland!

Dr. Frankenstein is told by the Herzog to get together with the Confederacy's priests to go over the philosophies and rules of Monastacism.

AD 1028: The influence of Winterthur expands, helping to alleviate some of the pressure placed upon it by competing Aragonese claims.

AD 1030: The Dye Trader in Zürich produces a Dye Shipment.

AD 1032: Schwyz finishes construction of a Palace Library (so Herzog Beinbrech can keep up with the latest installments of Eric Flint's 1632 series and David Weber's Honor Harrington series) at the same time the Dye Shipment form Zürich arrives.

PalaceLibrary.jpg

(Palace Library is a SW that boosts research in the city that builds it by 50% and provides a large culture boost)

AD 1034: Dr. Frankenstein announces that the priests have established several Monastic Orders and he's now talking with Korpskommandant Sephiroth and other key military leaders on how to develop Cavalry Tactics.

On top of that, St. Gallen establishes a Wool Trader.

WoolTrader.jpg

Later that year, we get word that the Kingdom of Sicily has started construction of the Hagia Sofia in Taranto. Herzog Beinbrech sends a diplomatic mission to Sicily and has his diplomats spy on Taranto.

Dr. Frankenstein and Herzog Beinbrech crunch some numbers based on the diplomat's observations and determine that Schwyz could complete work on establishing the Varangian Guard, build a Monastery and STILL get the Hagia Sofia built before they could!

AD 1040: Word arrives in Schwyz that Denmark and Sicily are both trying to complete the Domesday Book, but Bern will mostly likely finish it first. (Domesday Book acts like Wall Street in the normal game)

AD 1042: Our roving band of Warriors finally reaches Schwyz and checks into the government buildings to have their equipment upgraded to that of Swordsmen.... Our army is now completely up to date.

The Swordsmen also bring word from their travels that Castile is also trying to get in on the Domesday Book....

AD 1044: Workers have finally hooked up the Spices outside Thun and the Granite outside Basel.. We can build the Hagia Sophia now!

AD 1046: Schwyz establishes the Varangian Guard and begins construction of the Hagia Sofia.

VarangianGuard.jpg

Now Denmark won't be the only ones with tough, surly Viking warriors hanging around!

AD 1050: The influence of Basel and Geneva both expand for a second time.

The year, and this chapter ends with shady-looking Danish Berserkers moving through the Cantons of Thun and Lucerne... Thankfully all our cities have at least two troops (at least one of which is a tough Mercenary guard) now!

what will you do if the danes attack  (gets worried)

Kick their tails up between their ears, of course! ;)

Kapitel 5: Rosenrot
Chapter 5: Rose Red

Spoiler :
AD 1052: Dr. Frankenstein and Korpskommandant Sephiroth von Niebelheim announce that they've managed to draft up and thoroughly test a set of Cavalry Tactics, and that they will begin developing a Siegecraft doctrine for future wars that might come up. We can now train Knights!

CavTactics.jpg

Graf Blaze Injun von Thun sends a message to Ben Beinbrech, Herzog von Schwyz, that he has established a Spice Trader in Thun....

SpiceTrader.jpg

This firmly establishes the Swiss Confederacy as a great Merchant State. As if to emphasize that fact, the Amber Trader in Bern produces another Shipment of Amber bound for the capitol.

Near the end of the year, Danish Berserkers who'd been sneaking through the forests and fields attack the town of Lucerne without warning, slaughtering a veteran Sword company to the last man... Thankfully, the fighting alerted the town's defending Mercenary Guard company, who rushed into the breach. In the vicious fighting that followed, TWO COMPANIES of Danish Berserkers were wiped out, earning the Swiss Mercenaries the same reputation that they had in another world, and earn promotion to Veteran status....

As soon as the fighting is over and the town is secure, Comte Gamezrule de Lucerne writes a letter for Herzog Beinbrech and sends it out with a messenger on a fast horse... The Swiss Confederacy is once again at war with the Kingdom of Denmark!

AD 1054: Comte Gamezrule sends out an elite Archer company stationed in Lucerne, which hunts down and kills the last remaining Danish Berserkers fleeing the Canton. Herzog Beinbrech, having recieved the letter several days ago, sends a company of Swordsmen to reinforce Lucerne.

At Thun, Graf Blaze Injun leads a Mercenary Guard company out and jumps a Danish Berserker company attempting to pillage our Spices. The Mercs wipe out the Berserkers and are promoted to veteran status.

The last Danish Berserker company in Swiss territory is wiped out by a veteran Mercenary Guard company from Zürich.

Zürich also gains national recognition, when Graf Bucky Rea christens the first Schweitze Marine Schiff (Swiss Navy Ship), the Galley SMS Rosenrot, which departs on a journey of exploration.... While the ship is leaving port, the sailors can be heard singing:

Sah ein Mädchen ein Röslein stehen
Blühte dort in lichten Höhen
Sprach sie ihren Liebsten an
ob er es ihr steigen kann....

(A girl saw a little rose
It bloomed there in bright heights
She asked her sweetheart
if he could fetch it for her....)

AD 1058: The Gold Mine in St. Gallen sends a Shipment of gold to Schwyz. Meanwhile, Herzog Beinbrech trades Grain and Amber to Queen Isabella of Castile for Honey... Now we can establish a Honey Trader!

Elsewhere, all is quiet on the Western Front (for now anyways....)

AD 1060: Dr. Frankenstein announces that he and Korpskommandant Sephiroth have completed research on Siegecraft, which has led our great nation into a new era: the High Middle Ages!

HighMiddleAges.jpg

In addition, thanks to this breakthrough, we have gained knowledge of Crop Rotation, which allows our workers to clear Forests. Herzog Beinbrech tells Dr. Frankenstein to start researching Trade Fairs.... The goal is to get City State (one of, if not THE best government in the entire game) around the time our Golden Age ends...

The war picks up again late in the year with several Companies of Danish Berserkers pouring into the territory near Lucerne.

AD 1062: Graf Marius von Bern completes work on the Domesday Book, giving a HUGE boost to the Confederation Treasury!

DomesdayBook.jpg

The Salt Trader in Basel sends a Shipment back to Schwyz.

The Swordsmen from Lucerne wipe out a company of Danish Berserkers threatening a Worker gang outside the city. An Archer and Mercenary Guard company head North from Thun to hit the isolated Danish town of Kaupang... One way or another, Denmark is losing that territory before this war is over!

Later in the year, more Danish Berserkers pour into the territory near Lucerne, while a Longship lands a company of Berserkers outside Zürich!

AD 1064: Miss Tifa Lockheart, our Cultural Adviser, informs the Herzog that the Swiss Golden Age is over... The Herzog and his military aren't overly concerned with this, as Korpskommandant Sephiroth's troops continue to kick ass and take names...

The elite Archers who've been stomping invading Danish troops continue the trend by mopping the floor with some Berserkers harassing the livestock South of Lucerne. One of the Mercenary Guard companies in Zürich wipes out the Berserkers that landed outside the city. In the first OFFENSIVE action of the war, a company of Swordsmen from Lucerne enters Danish territory near Odense and defeat a company of Berserkers in battle.

They are forced to begin withdrawing when a huge horde of Berserkers starts moving up from Odense!

AD 1066: In light of this latest development, Korpskommandant Sephiroth von Niebelheim orders all companies that are at less than full strength to begin retreating back to the closest town.

Herzog Beinbrech allocates money from the Treasury to hurry training of our first Knight companies in Lucerne and St. Gallen.

Later in the year, the huge horde of Berserkers enter our territory South of Lucerne, in hot pursuit of our Swordsmen. Traveling merchants stop by the palace and inform Herzog Beinbrech that Aragon is building the Theodosian Walls (Great Wall)...

AD 1068: SMS Rosenrot, exploring along the Southern coast of Europe, makes contact with Grand Duke Jogalia of Lithuania. Elsewhere, St. Gallen's influence expands again, giving us access to a source of Wines.

Later in the year, Danish diplomats come begging for an audience, due to the fact that our troops have reached the outskirts of Kaupang, but Herzog Beinbrech tells them to shove it! We aren't even going to consider talking until we have control of that city!

We also hear rumors that Aragon has started work on the Book of Kells.

AD 1070: The Varangian Guard in Schwyz finishes training its first Varangian Guard unit... Now we can free up our regular troops in Schwyz to go attack the enemy!

Marius Schatten, Graf von Bern also informs the Herzog that a Honey Trader has been established in the city.

HoneyTrader.jpg

The Dye Trader in Zürich sends a Shipment to Schwyz.

In the Northwest, the battle of Kaupang begins. Our elite Archers wipe out a company of Spearmen, but lose half their men in the process. A company of Veteran Knights from Lucerne charges into the city, wiping out the last company of Spearmen, capturing the city along with 6 Gold.

KaupangCaptured.jpg

Our troops attack the Berserker horde South of Lucerne. A company of veteran Knights is lost, but we wipe out two companies of Berserkers.

Satisfied that Denmark has been taught a lesson, Herzog Beinbrech makes peace with King Canute, who agrees to renounce any claimst to Kaupang as part of the agreement.

AD 1072: The Dye Shipment form Zürich arrives in Schwyz. Later in the year we receive word that Denmark and Castile have started work on the Book of Kells (Wonder that doubles research in city).

AD 1074: Dr. Frankenstein informs the Herzog that Trade Fairs have been established in the Confederacy, and that he's now working on Guilds... We can now build Marketplaces in our towns and cities. One of the various traders in St. Gallen sends a Shipment back to Schwyz.

AD 1078: Construction of the Hagia Sofia is completed in Schwyz, making it one of the most religiously significant cities in the world.

HagiaSofia.jpg

AD 1080: Workers finish extending a road to the Wine country outside St. Gallen, allowing us to establish a Wine Trader now!

In the far South, the SMS Rosenrot sinks a Veleti Galley off the coast of the Aragonese colony of Perpignan.

AD 1084: Horrors! The Black Death hits Zürich! All military units and Graf Bucky Rea move outside the city to escape the contagion!

Later in the year, Aragon demands Wool and we give it to them... For now.

AD 1086: The territorial influence of Thun expands again.

Later in the year, another Veleti Galley attacks the SMS Rosenrot and gets sunk for its trouble.

AD 1088: A Wine Trader is established in Bern, right before the Plague hits Bern and Schwyz.

WineTrader.jpg

Herzog Beinbrech, Graf Marius and all troops evacuate the cities until the Plague dies down!

AD 1090: Dr. Frankenstein comes to Herzog Beinbrech's camp outside Schwyz and informs him that he's established regulations for establishing Guilds and he's now prepared to start delving into the techniques for running a City State.

Guilds.jpg

We can now build Guild Halls (buildings that boost production by 25%) in our towns and cities!

AD 1092: The Spice Trader in Thun and the Amber Trader in Bern send shipments back to Schwyz. The town of Winterthur establishes the first Guild Hall in the Confederacy.

AD 1094: Another Varangian Guard unit is recruited in Schwyz, and a message from the SMS Rosenrot informs Korpskommandant Sephiroth that the citizens of the Lithuanian city of Minks are dying from the Black Plague.

AD 1096: The citizens of Thun begin dying from disease borne from the swamps around the city, ironically, at the same time the Plague finally ends in Zürich, Schwyz and Bern.

AD 1098: St. Gallen's Gold Mine sends a shipment back to Schwyz. Workers complete a road to Kaupang, and once more, all our cities are connected to our sprawling trade network.

Later in the year, due to the Rosenrot being forced to shelter from a storm offshore near Trakai, Grand Duke Jogalia sends a nastygram to Herzog Beinbrech demanding that our forces leave at once. The Herzog sends a letter back informing the Grand Duke that the SMS Rosenrot was merely passing through and that the Grand Duke should take a chill pill.

AD 1100: Due to the population of Kaupang becoming mostly Swiss, the town is renamed to its German equivalent of Minderstadt.

Later in the year, word reaches us that SICILY has started work on the Book of Kells.

So it is, with another war successfully fought and the size of the Swiss Confederacy increased, that this chapter comes to an end.

Hey,

At Thun, Graf Blaze Injun leads a Mercenary Guard company out and jumps a Danish Berserker company attempting to pillage our Spices. The Mercs wipe out the Berserkers and are promoted to veteran status.

I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum. :D

how the heck did that happen

TRIPLE POST!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Isn't that a new kind of record? Triple post? Or has someone else made up more then 3 posts accidentally? :p

Later in the year, word arrives through diplomatic channels that the Kingdom of Castile, in their infinite wisdom, has founded the city of Toledo RIGHT NEXT TO A VOLCANO!!!!

 I've seen that before. Has anyone ever seen the "AI" build a city next to a volcano that is ACTIVE?

I was also saddened by the destruction of Toledo by your forces and not by the volcano. But still, I'll be subscribing to this story.

Once, during an EARLY playtest of the Final Fantasy mod (when I hadn't yet replaced all the default civs with Final Fantasy civs), About 20 turns into the game, I got word that the French had been wiped out... I was thinking, "WTH?!? Who could have enough troops lying around to wipe out an entire FACTION already?!?"

...About 20 turns after that, one of my Fighters was wandering around down South, and discovered the ruins of a town at the base of a volcano that was surrounded by lava flows... It would seem that the French had started next to the volcano, dropped their capitol right there, and it erupted before they could get a Settler out the door.

 I've seen that before. Has anyone ever seen the "AI" build a city next to a volcano that is ACTIVE? . . . .

I don't want to hijack HT's story, but yes. I have seen the AI build next to the same active volcano several times in the same game. You can read about it here if you're interested.
