Science

Eh, I dislike happiness on wonders wonders (unless desperate) because it seems unimaginative to me. I don't think 10 food is too extreme - powerful, yes, but it is a wonder after all.

I don't mind happiness on the Hanging Garden, it livens the place up ;) I agree that with some of the other wonders it can feel tacked on.

Thinking about regular gardens, should they provide happiness instead of food? It's primary aim to to inspire more great people through beauty rather than a free meal.

I'm thinking the hall can be 1:c5science: + 0.5:c5science:/:c5citizen: as a compromise between the current version, your suggestion, and Zaldron's suggestion. This will make the monument better than the hall for small cities (1-5:c5citizen:), and the hall better than the monument for moderate-sized to large cities.

Assuming that you also plan to include the 0.5 per pop on the library that was talked about I like this solution.

Comparing the Hanging Gardens formats we've tried recently:

  1. 10:c5food:
  2. 6:c5food: 3:c5happy:
  3. 4:c5food: 2:c5happy: 4:c5greatperson:
I like #2 best - it provides for exactly three citizens. I found #1 too extreme, and #3 has two different focuses (population and great people).

I like 1 and 2 with a *slight* preference for 1: It makes it very focused and it adds another dimension to the decision to build it ("will I go negative happy from the growth?"). I've had multiple situations where the 3 happy (+tradition happy) kept me afloat until other cities popped coliseums.

I wanted to amend my opinion about the AI research rate. After the Featured Game, i felt that it still needed a major boost in the late game. Having played another game with the Aztecs, where I researched faster but trailed Polynesia, Arabia and the Inca for a lot of the game, I think it's close to being balanced, and may only need another bump in the last era (or two) to make it super-competitive.

On a happy side note, a much larger number of AI civs are now competitive. In my last two games, Siam was cut down to size early and wasn't its usual late-game monster.

What do others think about the current AI performance regarding science?

*Spoilers for Featured Game 4 ahead*

In my game of the featured game, Persia is a science monster with over 2000 science at turn 250ish, while my science is a little under his. And I was focusing on science the whole game. Unfortunately the next AI was Rome with about 800 science per turn at the same point.

Persia and I are tied for techs though, since I probably utilize my Great Scientists and ending of RAs better.
