Scientists invent force field - psi weapons to come next

Seriously, can anyone find a more authoritative source? I'd like to know more but don't trust any of the sources (i.e. newspaper articles) I've found so far... Their (the DSTL) website didn't have anything either.

You won't find much published about this yet. The newspapers like to use the terms force field though as it sounds so impressive and futaristic, they did so last time this work was being reported. If another paper picks it up you'll probably also find they use similar terms. There's nothing on the free portion of Jane's at the moment which is usually more accurate, but most of the content is subcriber only.

There's a press release on the DSTL site that mentions the supercapacitor materials mentioned in the paper.

I really wish newspapers cited their scientific articles that they're reporting on or using.

I like your avvie. Any chance for a link to a higher res pic?

Nope, an old friend who works in graphic design hand made it for me just for the avatar use.

And we can always bring catapults back to the game... throw in a round filled with TNT and fire away... plus, the sound won't give up your location... ;)
Or mortars... explosive ammo is the way to go.
I read a sci-fi short story once about a guy who developed a weapon which stopped explosives - including simple things like bullets - from working. It enabled his side to briefly win the war - it was never explained who exactly was at war, though he was stationed in Canada - but the general he gave the weapon to was already preparing an academy to train cavalry at, and predicted a return to medieval seige warfare, including catapults. Decent story. I can't remember who wrote it though. Maybe Arthur Clarke.

Cease Fire, by Frank Herbert.

I don't get the physics here. It sounds like it's just electrically charging the armor. How does that "[vaporise] the copper jet that shoots out from the front of the RPG warhead"?

A strong magnetic field can deflect the latter.

Also if we do not cover this in my next electromagnetics class I will murder somebody

Also changing electric field -> induced magnetic field via ampere's law with maxwell's correction yadda yadda yadda (presumably why supercapacitors are used because they can charge/discharge quickly)

Catapults would be easily detected by mortar locating radar

then it should be hard to use field artillery on em

I just waiting for a Chinesse 'Scientific research probe' to place a solar sail on an asteroid and steer it towards the USA.

An asteroid sizable enough to destroy the USA is also likely to cause a global catstrophe. Even if China found one that didn't, I think the US might just decide to retaliate to an orbital bombardment with a few nukes, don't you? I now I would.
