I bet there was formerly a fort there that was then pillaged.
it's a bit too much inland for it, isn't it?

anyway for all lovers of lost ships, here a caravel sailing upriver. :)

I started a match using the Americans with a 3000BC start.
I got a lot of interesting results...

French foreign legion in north America:
civ4screenshot0004qb8.jpg

Aggressive Germans
Germans are not shy against the independents (collapsed incas), but mount an intercontinental expedition to conquer a useless town.
civ4screenshot0006ea0.jpg

Invasion USA!
The Russian declare war and invade New York.... being a couple of techs behind (curiasser+macemen vs cavalry+infantry) will not help them.

But why all these europeans come here to bother me... don't they have anything better to do in their own continent?
civ4screenshot0007rc3.jpg

Notice the Spanish Greece, the easter german expansion, and the balcanic mess. :)

Here's a great picture: I founded Islam and completed the Great Wall in one turn, two turns before I had the "barbarian horde" event and I only had one city.

I thought I would share with you all some screenshots of an unusually expansionist development of the world from my current Russian game.

First of all here's me:

Things are trundling along quite nicely, I've finally taken top score spot from the Germans. We've just had a world congress which gained me Wilna, although unfortunately it also lost me Cluj-Napoka (Kalosvar) - not a problem normally, and I was perfectly happy to lose it as it was massively culture crushed by the Germans (I got it in a previous congress), but unfortunately the stupid Turk UP has taken Kiev's pigs

Anyway, here's North America:

It's looking mighty French now, but before the US spawned there were no less than four different European civs who'd founded cities (Lynden included). This is the first time I can recall seeing the Germans with NA cities that weren't produced from conquerors.
Speaking of conquerors, the Mayans were taken out by the Vikings and the Aztecs by the English, but they respawned some time ago.

South America:

Again slightly more colonised than is usual, with Spain and Portugal making plentiful claims - note the two crappy Spanish cities sitting within two spaces at the tip of Argentina. Vikings hit the Incas, but were content to vassalize them.

Africa:

Behold the Dutch empire! Note also Arabian India - Arabia was high in score for a long time, and I think they must have held Persia as well until they respawned, and maybe Egypt too.

Finally, Australia and Indonesia:

The part I was really pleased to see - significant colonisation of Australia and Indonesia by no less than four civs! England and the Netherlands have settled on Australia and there's more Arabian expansion, much more than I usually see. Plus there's those cheeky Germans once again.

All in all I'm very pleased to see how far the world has been colonised - I think there has been something of a lack of wars which probably helped. It's only 1817, so hopefully there'll be some colonisation still to come! :goodjob:

I can do you one better: I control all of Europe and America (well, with the exception of Iceland and the little state of America confined to Guantanamo). Inca, Aztecs, Netherlands (who got their only city Penang from a late world conference) and India are my vassals. And no, I did not disable stability. See my discussion in the strategy section for how to acquire a mega-empire (no pacifism here for sure).:)

According to his post in the strategy thread, yes Inca was gifted some colonial cities.

Your just gonna need a new nick though now, as the "pacificist" charade is well and truly up! :king:

Good job.

It started out all innocently. I was trying to collapse Russia because they stupidly won the AP resdiency vote. Well, Russia was allied with Turkey (who was initially pleased with me before the war, like everybody). So after capturing all those tiny cities in Scandinavia I became unstable, so I HAD to assume the dictatorship to save my empire (sound familiar in real history?:p). I tried to switch back to US but by then my empire was too big to be stable. Declaring war on everybody was the only way to save my hide.

I finally won domination victory unintentionally by 1930, with around 9000 score as Charles de Gaulle. (somewhat appropriate)

In AD 1793, following a severe plague pandemic, several Native American tribes declared war on the European invaders. Here is their first victory:

Spoiler :
sioux_power.jpg

Another tribe took the city of Minneapolis a few years later, which was undefended due to the plague. The city was retaken a few decades after that by British colonial troops and returned to US control. Washington DC remained in the hands of the Natives for almost a century, during which the population declined to a mere 1,000. It was returned to US control after the intervention of a French expeditionary corps. The President and Congress remained in New York City.

In AD 1793, following a severe plague pandemic, several Native American tribes declared war on the European invaders. Here is their first victory:

I just had a very similar experience. The turn before the Americans spawned, 3 Dog Soldiers appeared on the Stone just NW of Washington. I (France) attacked and killed one of them, to reduce the number which would flip to the Americans a few turns later.

Then the Americans appeared and founded Washington. But the military genius that is the AI decided to move ALL the settlers and starting units one tile south of Washington on this, their first turn.

So the Dog Soldiers entered and sacked Washington immediately, which destroyed all of the initial American units (The American Civilization has been destroyed!). Two turns later, the 3 cities within the American flip area (Washington, New York and Savannah) all flipped back and American was "reborn" though, but this time with some Musketmen and Pikemen (and the 2 Dog Soldiers which were still holed up in Washington). And the only reason they got this many extra troops was because England declared war on them.
