SG Lurkers, ready?

(Continued from my other post)
p.p.s This DOES NOT mean that i'm bailing on this game

p.p.p.s Can someone please post in the Ucel03 Extremus Totalus and tell them to drop me from the game for the reasons previously stated and save me 30 minutes of waiting for pages to load.

@Liq
A real bummer isn't it. I'll have to play some single player games with raging barbs to vent my anger at crappy internet connections:mad:

Hope you 'Net woes are resolved soon, Sir T.
I'll post on the other thread for you.

Liq, I just started on that settler -- the intention was to do what you did (grab the flood plains) but anything else there would have been a good choice too. :)

L_M, I don't think we moved up at all in military rankings, but I'm much more comfortable now should we hear the trumpets calling. Angle is going to need some big time culture to keep Nagasaki from poaching our tiles.

Annoyed none of my screens took but really were actionless turns.

the 3cc sg I'm at, toku also opened borders with us, after sharing a religion a long time mind you....

not sure if they patched him a bit or well no one bothered to REALLY try and be nice to him instead of just walking up and smacking him in the pants. If it wasn;t a 3cc he'd have been toast

p.p.p.s Can someone please post in the Ucel03 Extremus Totalus and tell them to drop me from the game for the reasons previously stated and save me 30 minutes of waiting for pages to load.
doing that now sir toma...
Cheers!

I had a game with Toku as a neighbor; same religion, trades (can't recall if we had open borders.) Peace for centuries. Come middle ages, he attacked. Every 20 turns or so -- he'd assault Baghdad (a very high culture border town), pillage the border areas, get beat back. Repeat. Ironically I had enlisted Monty as my 'vassel' but Toku nearly wiped him out.

Liq, looks like it was a night for lost screenshots
Ah well, as you say you build up much needed infrastructure.

1: 1035 AD
Djenne completed a temple, starts work on a library.

2. 1040 AD
Forge completed in Angle, start work on a Hindu missionary.
Judaism spreads to Walata.

Feudalism has been attained by Cyrus and Alex.

Alex? That punk? BTW - He declared war on Hatty, and she is cautious
towards him, however, Monty is annoyed with us, and we didn't do nothing!
Alex, you jerk.
As well,Feudalism, Machinery, Theology and Meditation are the only other techs the
AI has that we do not. Nobody wants to trade them to us, tried that.
Where is the love, I ask? Helping your fellow man and all that. Harumph!
Whatever we are researching (drama it seems) is due next turn.
What shall we study? Still can't get tanks, so....

3. 1045 AD
Drama finishes, start on Literature.
turn322iw.jpg

Pigpen produces Hindu Temple, starts work on a theater.
I asked Nappy if he could give us Meditation, he did.
deal2dj.gif

What a cool dude, that Napster. Right on! Our ranking is now a solid 4th, up from whatever (5th, 6th?)
Keeping an eye on Saladin. He has two archers/spearmen north of Kumbi in
his town of Khurasan.
Not an immediate threat, but thinking of placing troops on our stone resource may be in order soon.
heftingstone2rm.gif

4 1050 AD
Shaggy finishes Christian Temple (WTH?), starts work on a lighthouse.

5. 1055 AD
Coffee break... meet me back here at 1060 AD or so, may have something
to tell you.
(nada happens, just workers doing work and stuff)
Toku's Nagasaki ain't doing so hot, our culture is caving in his border.
He may not be happy when (not if) we take his town from him.
Tough cookies, Toku. If the hindu followers of yours want to rejoin the
Lurker flock, let em*(see below). Nothing Personal, dude.
flasher29sm.gif

(*Book of Lurkers; Page 79, para 3, line 8. The page right after the centerfold and the jokes.)

6. 1060 AD
Worker completes mine west of Djenne. (sweet!) citizens working the mine,
Library due now in two, building a second mine.
Literature due next turn, still no tanks so....
I trade our sheep for Nappy's wheat, buttering him up after he gave us
a free tech.
Only losing 18 gold per turn, instead of the 35+ or so when I started...
Losing 18 gold is actually quite an achievement for our financial civ.

7. 1065 AD
Literature is completed, start work on compass.
turn330ut.jpg

Yeah, I was humming and hawing about it, other techs took a little long
except Theology (10 turns). 8 turns for compass, and we may get more trade
routes with harbors (coin to solve our problems)
Angle finished missionary, start work on a library, due soon with a chop
incoming next turn. Missionary starts off in the direction of our western
neighbors.
We'll see what Saladin has been up to.
I also swung a mighty big trade with Alex. We got Feudalism
deal2dj.gif
(which will
keep us in the game, everyone else has it) for drama, lit and metal casting.
Heavy trade, he got the better end of it buy about 700 beakers, but we
won't be caught with our pants down, and now can build longbows.
BTW, we have now entered the medival era.
Oh, and our ranking is now #2, behind Cyrus! Woot!
All this on a turn that was otherwise dull.
"My little pony" has been upgraded from Warrior to spearman too, near Djenne.

8. 1070 AD
Shaggy completes Lighthouse, started on Theater.
Djenne finishes Library, starts on Market.
Compass down to six now.
Timbuktu finishes market, losing only 12 coins per turn.
Timbuktu starts work on a Hindu Monastary (want more missionaries to
scout/convert our threats).
Saladin has squeezed us out of #2, back in #3 now. Hmmm...
Oh, and Nappy, the Incas and Saladin have adopted Vassalage!
I wonder what they're planning?

9. 1075 AD
Alexander wants us to stop trading with Cyrus. Not that I care, but Alex is
way down on the pole of civ's I want to impress, Cyrus is ranked #1.
I tell Alex it ain't happening, and he walks off with a huff.
Alex has adopted Vassalage and serfdom. What's up wit 'dat? What a big baby.
Missionary still trek'ing west.
Oh, I adopted Serfdom too (not a lot of whip cracking going on anyway with slavery).
Workers working 50% faster now. That'll be nice.
Napolean has a warrior wandering around in Saladin's land. Okay, whatever.
We are back in #2 spot, sliding past Saladin. Heh heh. Sucker.
turn393xn.jpg

10. 1080 AD
Monty demands tribute from us, fur. I say, here... take it, will that
be all for you today? Thank you, please come again (*mutter mutter*) :gripe:
Not in the mood to fight Monty quite yet, need intel first. Besides,
Alex has been getting ansy lately, we'll fight when were ready.
Not much else to pass on for my final turn.
********************************

Summing up:
  • We have one missionary heading in a general westward direction.
Plan on having him walk through Saladin's land, and establish Hinduism
in his Capital. Use him as you see fit.
  • Worker moved into trees NW of Shaggy, ready for next player to chop it.
I don't like trees next to a city, especially on the enemies border. If
Saladin ever attacks, guess where he will put his invading army? That defense
bonus should work for us only, remove them trees, get the culture, then mine
    the hills instead.
  • Second mine almost ready at Djenne, it should start thinking about adding
more culture soon. Wonder time maybe for that city.
  • Kumbi is almost done it's forge, and ready to grow. It needs culture too,
maybe plop a cheap monastary there, faster to send preachers west, NW, and the culture boost would be nice as well. Saladin's town, Khurasan is getting a culture squeeze from us too. I'd like to take it. Got workers building Kumbi a mine too, for a boost in production.
  • Angle is due to grow, library due in 3. Nagasaki is getting the squeeze too.
  • Walata needs worker attention, but I've been building our main infrastructure. Send whatever worker we can spare to Walata, it is such a sad little town.
  • Also should build a road to Kumbi, discovered it is taking too long to walk across our empire with our missionary.
  • Can start building our military again, soon. We'll need it for a fight that seems to be in our future. Monty won't accept furs for long, and something's bugging Alex, but you know him. Toku ain't such a big fan of ours anymore either (from culture squeeze, his own fault really).
  • We are in second place now folks. I expect to see us in first place soon and keep it. (No pressure, but I will judge your moral character if our rank dips below #3) Heh Heh.
  • Compass due in 4. Next tech should be...?

Great turn L_M! Put us right up in the rankings!

I'm gonna be unable to play until Monday evening at the earliest as I'll be away from my PC for the weekend. Damned real-life intruding on things again! Anyhoo, the bottom line is that I'm out of the rotation for a while, so if my turn comes up over the weekend then feel free to skip me.

No point holding things up.

Cheers all.

:hammer:

Well done!
And a great report to boot

We're growing up now. As for the next tech ... is it too early to start thinking about liberalism or (uhm, which teach gives the free great merchant?)
Another religion never hurts (if for no other reason than keeping it from our rivals.)
Civil service is nice (for bureacracy) as well.
Oh, and we do get cheap banks.
How's that for decisive?

I'm really surprised Napolean gave us a tech. Good deal.

Holidays and such are upon us so I suspect they'll be lots of juggling with turns. See you when you get back Percinho!

Got it and played it. Report up when I have a chance to go over my notes.

And I'm fully expecting to receive a public flogging from Luv_Muffin... :(

Remember back in the old days?
When on a Saturday afternoon you'd take your honey downtown to watch the floggings *ouch* :whipped: then toss back a mead & go on a picnic?

Nowadays, what do people do for romance? Smooch and stuff? Ick.

I'm sure your turn went well, Scowler. I have absolute faith in your ability to deliver. I think you're just teasing this old goat.
You didn't trade Kumbi for clams or something silly, did you?

Yeah, I figured something was going on way back when I noticed our military had "My little Pony" names and such. It was either a personal preference, or you got yourself a vicks nightrub sniffing habit. :crazyeye:
(Do you even have Vicks where you come from? Maybe we should send you Buckley's, it goes down real smooooth!)

(0) 1080AD
- Micromanage PigPen to give us some more commerce
- Ack! Kumbi is on “avoid growth” for no good reason!!! The city governor kindly donates certain body parts for medical research.

(1) 1085AD
- Alex offers us Gold in exchange for Corn (Alex loves us really) – how could I refuse?
- Our Hindu monastery is ready at Timbuktu. I order up a longbow (we need more military and it passes the time until harbors are available).
- Hinduism spreads to Nagoya:

1085AD.jpg

(2) 1090AD
A Malinese revolt has taken place in Nagasaki:

1090ADMalineserevolt.jpg

Not much else to report. A worker builds a mine south of Gao, and some others build a road to Djenne.

(3) 1095AD
- Library ready at Angle. Now that Nagasaki is revolting we need to keep up cultural pressure and make it ours – a theatre is in order, I think.
- Forest cleared at Shaggy, meaning that the theatre there will be ready next turn.
- Hinduism spreads all the way up to Huamanga:

1095ADHinduspread.jpg

(4) 1100AD
- Hatty adopts Serfdom and Vassalage
- Our diligent scientists have researched Compass. There are several directions we could go next, but I plump for Civil Service. I think we need to bolster our military (macemen) and Bureaucracy will be a bonus. I’m hoping we will be able to pick up Machinery from someone and gain a fast track to Guilds and then Gunpowder.
- Theatre at Shaggy. Now that Compass is finished we can start on a Harbor and pick up the trade bonus to help pacify our frantic accountants.
- And the big news this century? We now have control of Nagasaki – ta da!:

1100ADNagasaki.jpg

We even get a free longbow with our city! Curiously, even though you might expect Toku to be somewhat ticked off with us for subsuming his city, our relations have actually gone up to +5 (pleased) now that our borders are now longer sparking. On the downside (why is there always a downside?), the maintenance costs have sent our budget into freefall: -20gpt!!!
In the meantime, the sooner we get Nagasaki producing culture the better, so the first build has to be a theatre.

(5) 1105AD
- Livy gives us a smelly review, but what does he know?

1105ADLivy.jpg

- Monty adopts Hereditary Rule. Oh joy.
- PigPen builds a theatre and starts a longbow.
- The financial plunge is now freaking me out, so I turn the science down to 70%. This of course loses us 2 turns on Civil Service, but slows things to a (slightly) less dive-tastic -4gpt.

(6) 1110AD
- Timbo finishes its longbow, so now I begin the planned Harbor. (The longbow is sent up to Walata, which is relatively undefended at the moment.)
- Djenne’s market is now open for business. Let’s be daring and try for the Chicken Itches. If we succeed we’ll gain +25% defence on all cities, which will be useful when things go south (and let’s face it, they will sooner or later…); if not, our purse will be a little bit fatter for a while. All we need is some luck, some mines, and a few trees to chop.
- In other news, Toku has Machinery but isn’t ready to trade yet. Ditto H-C. Bummer.

(7) 1115AD
- Hatty starts her Golden Age (Luv_Muffin can wave good-bye to his 3rd place)
- Gao… um… forges a forge, and harbors desires for a harbor.
- Angle’s theatre is ready. Now that the culture here is less critical, attention needs to shift to the military: you can bet that Toku won’t stay all sweetness and light forever. So: Longbow ready in 7. (The other main option is probably a market, but this would have negligible effect at the moment).

(8) 1120AD
- Toku decides to close borders on us:

1120ADToku.jpg

Our borders are once again clashing and so he’s gone down to +4 (cautious).
- If that wasn’t enough, Cyrus wants us to stop trading with Alex. Since Cyrus is currently at the top of the pile and Alex is at the bottom, guess whose side I’m going to take? Alex gives us the silent treatment – he doesn’t love us anymore :(
- Hindu monastery at Kumbi completed; horse archer started in anticipation of that special day when our Greek ex decides to start throwing plates at us.

(9) 1125AD
- H-C makes a pitiful demand for Meditation. I haven’t the heart to laugh at him. Vicky has the right idea: we must give aid and comfort to our inferiors. If H-C had a tail, it would be wagging furiously now; since he doesn’t we have to do with a simple +5 in relations.
- Saladin adopts Theocracy; Cyrus adopts Hereditary Rule.

(10) 1130AD
- PigPen builds a longbow and starts a courthouse (a worker is currently busy chopping).
- I cancel that annoying tribute to Monty

- Our missionary is currently north of Baghdad: I’ve been using him to scout around Sally’s territory. Unfortunately, all the cities already have either Buddhism or Taoism already. The next player can decide whether it is worth trying his luck on one of these.
- We badly need a garrison at Nagasaki. There is a longbow there at the moment, but I don’t trust Toku, and this city will be on the front line of any assault. In the meantime, the theatre will be ready next turn, allowing the borders to expand in 5.
- Build more units! We can afford a larger army. No, actually we can’t afford a larger army, but we need one. We are still 8th in military and when the war comes we don’t want to be caught with our pants down. Monty hates us, and Alex is still nursing a broken heart and a grudge. Only Nappy and H-C are pleased with us, and I don’t know how much help they would be in a fight.
- Finances: I’ve got us back to -3gpt (at the expense of our science) but we need to do better. Harbors will help, as will courthouses: try to juggle these with military units. Also look for opportunities to build cottages or micro-manage cities to maximise commerce.

“The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am…”

:gulp:

- A soon to be ex-Scowler

That has to be the quickest flip I've ever seen. Whatever possessed Toku to plop a city there in the first place?

What's scary is, we have what seems to me a healthy military yet still in eighth? What are our neighbors planning?

At any rate, nice turn set.

Turn order:

Yay! I'm glad we got Nagasaki so soon. Theater was a smart move, it's under cultural pressure, from your screenshots.

A few things I've been pondering:
  • Has Shaggy had a cultural expansion yet? If not, it will soon. What sea resource is off the coast? (I forgot). If we are able too, drop a work boat on it asap. (Unless it's whales, then we can't do nothing for a while, can we?)
  • I squeezed Kumbi just to get that forge done, was taking forever. I did however, plant a new farm there to aid growth after the forge was done, and built a mine so production would speed up too. Glad it's growing now.
  • I liked your decision to attempt the wonder in Djenne. The AI doesn't seem to be chasing wonders very hard, if we get it we will be a little safer. As well, a cultural dynamo in the centre, like Djenne, can really influence the bordering cities Nappy and Saladin have placed north of us. Strategic cultural move, way to go.
  • I agree with the military assessment. We might want to que up a load of units, switch to vassalage when they are due for completion, and then switch back to our cheaper civic. Makes sense to milk the extra promotions.
  • I forgot to play with the boat Blackluck built for us. I had an idea to use it for scouting too, travel up the western coast, since we currently have open borders. Build another galley (or caraval now) to replace it on gaurd duty. We could also load a settler/longbowman in it, and hope to find an island or new land to settle on our exploration. When we get optics, it can hang a left, and search for the new world.
  • I'm glad you've been using our preacher as a scout. Might as well, right? If Monty hasn't shut down the border yet, maybe we can scout his empire and/or spread hinduism there as well. If the border is open, it won't be for long.
  • Who is apply cultural pressure to Saladin's west?
  • Should we plop a city west of Goa on the coast, east of Shaggy? We have some room, and can use the sea and some land tiles too. Some overlap, but won't be a problem until modern times, and we can solve that with specialists by then.
  • Did we find a worker to connect & farm for Walata yet? That sad little town will be in danger of revolt if we don't get it moving.

I think you did good, Scowler. How'd we know Hatty would pull a Golden Age out of nowhere? Notice how close we are to first place? We in the the front pack, and staying there. With our city growth too, we can again start using all the hamlets/cottages we've built. And courthouses are desperately needed. Our government is running like a third world country, our taxes are being skimmed by corruption. Ack! Even a few courthouses will put us back in the black.

Well played turn Scowler. Nice turn log too (I like the screenshots).
Still excited we got Nagasaki. Yay!
Now, about this 4th place...
hammerhead2nr.gif

Heh heh. Just kidding. You did good.
comforting7hu.gif

Good luck, greggo. Show us your stuff :D

Monty closed borders with us earlier (on my turn.) At the time I didn't consider scouting his territory :(

There aren't new lands; this isn't a Terra map  There may be some islands here and there (if I recall I made this a balanced map, which is essentially a pangea.) Nonetheless, scouting the north is still a good plan.

I too like Djenne as a cultural powerhouse.
Any thoughts on where we'd like the Globe Theatre? I've found specializing cities for the great people output to be pretty effective.

We can indeed put a city between Gao and Shaggy. However, we have to get our economy under control first. I'm somewhat shocked at our money woes. Then again, we got a bit shafted for resources.

The Buddhist block is looking very strong. If those three decide Mali looks tasty we could be in for quite a fight.

Okay, so grabbing a new continent for ourselves is out.
This makes me nervous, not knowing what is beyond our borders.
If the other civs grab whatever available terrain that is outside our continent, we may find ourselves as small fry suddenly.
From the global view, or continent is only 1/2 the globe, there must be "something" else out there. Right? Or am am I on an X-files trip?

The Budhists do look better than us Hindu's. This was my thinking for subverting on of their stronger deciples, Saladin. (But if he has enacted Theocracy, we won't be converting any of his cities for now. Missionary can still explore though.)
We can get to Saladin's cities faster than Cyrus. It'd be nice to gain Hatty as an ally too, but unless we can airdrop preachers on her lands, that kind of overland trek will be a mammoth undertaking. Trade would do our job faster for us.
We might want to convert all our towns to Hindu *cough* (Shaggy) *cough*, at least. Could also drop Judaism (sp?) in our towns too. Extra culture, and go for the block on Budhist missionaries getting a toehold in our cities.

Globe Theatre? What about our National Wonders?
Maybe we should decide what our three important cities will be (Timbuktu, Djenne, and... Kumbi?) What wonders do we have in Timbuktu?
Good point, Blackluck. Maybe we should actually have a plan for something like this. I mean, it is our SG victory condition we're talking about. Heh heh.

We're doing surprisingly well, I think, for playing on Prince Level.

On the balance maps I've played before, there is only one super continent. Of course given my history  who knows what map type I selected

The Globe Theatre is a national wonder. That and the national epic in a high population city will be cranking out artists. For culture, building cathedrals generates a ton of it. In my private game as India I didn't even plan on a culture victory but won a CV anyway in the mid 1800's (Delhi ended up with 100k+ culture ; Industrous with stone and marble is just ... sick )

Subverting Saladin sounds tempting. We can all but write off Toku as a possible ally; Nappy doesn't seem to be doing much at the moment. Do we risk pissing him off? Early on he was a threat, now we can probably easily fend him off if it comes to that.

Kumbi or Gao as the third city would be my choice; with a decent navy Gao would be easier to defend; the city doesn't neccessarily need a lot of production from my experience (although it certainly helps.) Kumbi would be a stronger city, but if we do see war it'd be subjected to pillaging I think. Hard to say.

As this is the first Prince game for all of us, I think, yep, doing quite well.
