SG Lurkers, ready?

:rotfl:
Great pics, L_M.

While we can't declare war, we can join if asked or ask an ally to join.
It would be great I think if we can get the Inca roped into a war or three; might slow down their amazing tech pace. I wonder if we can get anyone else to stop trading with Monty. A big Monty with lots of production isn't going to be pretty.

Are we eligible yet for the heroic national wonder?

The more we can cripple Toku now, the better; once he's declared war, it's going to become a frequent occurance if his behavior in other games is any indication. Pillaging is a very good plan. Anyone know if we are subjected to war weariness, since we are the ones who were declared on? (I've never in any game had a war go long enough to be affected by it.)

Percincho, in a game I'm playing now it's pretty difficult to get cities, even when bombarding down to 0% defense. Results seem to be a coin flip, despite what the 'odds' say ... thus, the bigger the ratio, the better (and since we have no razing, we need to troops to hold the city too.) So I think it was a good call not to attempt a city take over if you weren't comfortable with the odds. :goodjob:

Yeah Percinho, what BlackLuck said.

There is a huge difference between sitting down, having a coffee and making brilliant (*cough cough*) theories about what we should do next, and actually playing your turn.

While I can talk about how easy it is to smash your enemy, I'm still building as many monestaries as I can. lol. :crazyeye:

People like me are allowed to lead men into battle. Scary thought, huh?

I still think your turn allowed Scowler a great freedom of options (always good) for his turn. An assist is like a goal, anyone who says different needs to look at Wayne Gretzky's stats, then come talk to me. (*it almost makes sense, if you read it real fast*) :D

EDIT: Oh ty BlackLuck! (*eyelash flutter*)
Those pictures were almost 100% accurate game footage!
WOW, this new patch sure does add a lot of personality to them civ leaders. ;)

Grrrrrrrrrr.... Don't make me angy Toku. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

Micro-management time:
- Timbuktu is adjusted to improve production – we gain a turn on cavalry; growth stays the same.
- Djenne: adjusted to give an extra commerce; growth stays the same
- Gao: currently unhealthy, but tolerable. However, we don’t want things to get any worse so I decide to slow growth by appointing an engineer (+2 hammers). I also notice that an aqueduct is queued up after the current cavalry build. Sensible, and will obviously be needed eventually, but I veto it anyway in favour of a caravel, which I believe is more urgent.
- PigPen: also unhealthy, and growing way too fast to cope with this. As no health buildings/resources are available I halt growth and put specialists to work: 1 scientist; 1 merchant; 1 priest. We also don’t need 2 artists so I change 1 of them to a scientist. PP is now generating 15GP points per turn (and we are still producing +28 culture/turn, which is more than enough for the time being).
- Shaggy: adjusted to favour production. It is still growing (slowly), but the grenadier build drops from 10 to 7 turns.
- Walata: adjusted to give +2 commerce and +1 food while keeping production at max.
- Nagasaki: adjusted to give +2 hammers and +1 commerce while keeping growth the same – grenadier drops from 9 to 8 turns. Next, the specialist is switched from scientist to engineer: grenadier drops from 8 to 7 turns (research on Rifling remains unaffected).
- Marooned: adjusted slightly in favour of production – growth drops from 4 to 6 turns, but production on the forge goes from 31 to 21 turns, which I think is a better option. We also get an extra commerce point.

Civics:
- Change from Serfdom to Emancipation: we no longer need the worker bonus, and the big E will spread a little unhappiness in all Toku’s cities.
- Switch from Free Speech to Vassalage (units ready next turn)
- Change from Hereditary Rule to Representation: we have enough happiness leeway to cope with this change (for the moment) and I think we will benefit more from Representation (plus it is cheaper). Our only problem here is PigPen, but since it is our biggest city the actual loss in happiness will only be -1, at least until war weariness kicks in. To cover the loss in production caused by this change I send the remaining specialist artist into the fields.

Game saved; time for bed.

(1) 1658AD
- Right away Nappy drops by to offer us Rifling + 20gp in exchange for Democracy. I’m sure I will be roundly cursed for this, but I am going to accept. I make a judgement call on whether we are likely to build SoL before anyone else and decide it is unlikely while we are tied up with Toku. More importantly, how long will it be before Toku gets Rifling from someone? You can beat me later…
- Production is switched to Riflemen in various places.
- Steel is started (due in 12)

(2) 1660AD
- We destroy a lone Japanese grenadier on his way to pillage our land.

(3) 1662AD
- Gao: caravel -> caravel
- Walata: university -> rifleman
- Nappy switches from Nationhood to Emancipation
- HC also switches to Emancipation (I notice that he now has both Corporation and Scientific Method!)
- A mini-stack consisting of 3 grenadiers and 1 cat approaches Naga.
- Oh, and we squish another offending grenadier who foolishly steps out into the open.

(4) 1664AD
- The mini-stack is destroyed (we lose 1 cavalry in the process)

(5) 1666AD
- Monty declares War…

… on Cyrus :D

(6) 1668AD
- Saladin offers us Corporation and 50 gold for Democracy: I agree. I'm just a guy who can't say no.
- Gao: caravel -> caravel
- We lose a farm E of Naga to a pillaging knight, but he is then slaughtered for the insult.
- And speaking of insults, I haven’t forgotten Toku’s slanderous words so I start sending some troops towards Kushans.

(7) 1670AD
IBT: The solitary grenadier in Kushans attacks our grenadier outside the walls and loses! Ha! Foolish Toku: there are now just 2 longbows and 2 cats in Kushans.
- Our cats bombard the defences of Kushans down to 3%
- Cavalry kills 1 longbow
- Rifleman (upgraded from longbow in Naga a couple of turns earlier) kills the other longbow
- Our second rifleman kills cat 1
- Another cavalry kills cat 2 and we have captured Kushans in a single turn! (resistance there is 9 turns!)

Kushans_captured.jpg

Kushans.jpg

Unfortunately, we get hit hard by maintenance costs :(

(8) 1672AD
IBT: a Japanese caravel/galley combo kills our galley guarding Gao’s fishing grounds. Gao is left starving because we can’t work the sea tiles due to the Japanese blockade.
- Obviously this is unacceptable so I press our newly-built caravels into action:

1672galley.jpg

1672caravel.jpg

Gao can now eat once more.
- Kumbi: rifle -> rifle
- PigPen: rifle -> rifle
- Angle: rifle -> rifle
- One of our riflemen kills a pillaging Japanese knight near Naga.

(9) 1674AD
IBT: military intelligence observing enemy troop movements reports numbers of riflemen being deployed in various places. Some rogue nation has clearly supplied Toku with forbidden technology.
- Our victorious rifle from the previous turn was unfortunately left exposed and ends up capped by a sneaky Japanese grenadier. He will be avenged.
- Gao: caravel -> caravel
- Shaggy: rifle -> caravel (to help destroy the enemy caravel currently blockading the whales nearby)
- Walata: rifle -> rifle
- Naga: rifle -> rifle
- A cavalry unit from occupied Kushans kills a marauding enemy knight.
NB: Naga and Walata have both been switched to “Avoid Growth” in order to prevent the happiness limit being exceeded.

(10) 1676AD
IBT: An enemy knight attacks Kushans and dies.

Notes:
- PigPen is now suffering from war weariness. Walata and Naga are also on the edge. Consider switching civics to deal with this?
- As noted above, don’t forget both Walata and Naga are on “Avoid Growth”.
- One of our caravels is on its way W to tackle the blockade on the whales at Shaggy.
- Beware of more enemy ships heading our way: Toku has a large navy.
- Toku has also sent some grenadiers towards Kushans:

What a turn! Nice move taking Kushans!
I love what our cavalry can do for us.
bud2vw.gif

This will take further study, lots of good data there to mentally chew over.
First thing I notice, Osaka is a sitting duck.
Do we have any caravels near Timbuktu? If so, I hope Toku puts those troops on his at Kagoshima onto galleys. It would be nice if we can sink his army at sea, instead of fighting them on land. One good naval battle can destroy his second attempt at a touchdown.
Will now go back to studying all this cool data I'm provided with.
Also looking into if we can starve Kushans by making all those citizens turn into specialists. Bring that resistance time down a lot, and get that city producing for us a lot sooner. (*Santa brought me a Civ4 strategy guide*)

Good Job scowler. Oh, and that pic.. is that an actual picture of you? Lots of muscles there, you do that buns of steel video too?
I think your announcement of Monty going to war gave me palpatations though. You are so cruel sometimes. lol

EDIT: Tech trading was a smart move. Other civs had democracy and were trading amongst themselves, so you trading it to gain ground on HC was a good move. Steel huh? Cannons! Nice, this war might be over sooner than Toku thinks.
Kushans has a courthouse too, after you sacked it. Nice! Forge too, that city will be quite usefull to us.

:hammer:

Impressive, Scowler. :hatsoff:
Kushans is a major haul (I wanted that city site way back )

Now Osaka would be a good target, if we can muster the troops. (What a prize Tokyo would be though too. )

Do we continue to press the war, or regroup and wait for him to redeclare?

I know what L_M wants to do ;)

Toku Troop buildup at Kagoshima:

Caravel - 4
Galley - 4
Grenadier - 5
Riflemen - 2
Longbowmen - 1
Knights - 2
Horse Archers - 2
Total = 20
*Looks like a naval transport in progress.
Toku will likely leave 4 units defending, so...

Pillaging force we can expect (on furs?):
8 land units (Knights, Horse Archers (4 on horseback) & some grenadiers for sure)
His navy will likely be all four galleys and all four caravels.
I don't think we will be able to stop him before he makes a drop off.
Riflemen are good against horses, grenadier vs grenadier (we could use a few with pinch as a promotion, should help some). If after he lands, we hit his stack with a suicidal catapult(barrage), that stack will be lost in any fight he starts. After initial battle, cavalry should be able to mop up any wounded Japanese if we have any in the area.
I don't think we can prevent losing a few tiles to pillaging, but I think we can bait him into attacking. None of his units have a medic promotion, so once they are wounded we can hunt them down and destroy them. Workers will repair any damage he causes.
* I think this will work... if that is indeed his plan. Next player has to deal with it though, so good luck. Just glad it ain't me, I had enough of his stacks of death.
BlackLuck said:
I know what L_M wants to do ;)
Heh heh. Yup.
Is it BlackLuck's turn now?

PigPen, Shaggy & Walata still can produce temples & a colosseum for happiness. Temples will help (culture +1, Happiness +1) and as a spiritual civ, we get them cheap!

It is indeed, however I'm at work  and won't post the turn until early evening.

I just noticed the ellipsis in the stack at Kagoshima.
Dang, that's a lot of troops. And, sadly, we don't have a huge tech lead on him.
Dunno what I'm gonna do .... one more city than some nice war reparations would be nice.

Really? Peace? When (it's going to happen, just let him attack you *the fool*) that army of his is destroyed, he has absolutley nothing left to throw at us except insults. I still say grab him by the nose and kick him in the pants until it's the dust settles on the New (and larger) Lurker Empire.
He's all talk, has no moxie! You can take him, BlackLuck!
It might be exciting for a few turns...
pom1yw.gif

.. but I have faith in you.
pistols25jx.gif

That buildup at Kagoshima looks like his last gasp, and we already are taking his cities. Every turn we get stronger, he is getting weaker. The handwriting is on the wall, he just doesn't know it yet.

If he does use his galleys, he will also open up Kagoshima for a steal for us too. If he sends lousy units, we win defending. If he sends his best units, we can then take his city after we defend (and get promotions too). If he attacks, we win. In my optimistic rose-colored glasses kind of world, he would be smarter to defend against us than attack. If he does attack, then we take his empire away from him, and he won't have anything left to stop us with (besides tons of catapults).

Assuming I am right, and Toku will make a stab at Angle (instead of Timbuktu, which would be madness), here's an idea.
I am assuming that we will have the riflemen to send (4 needed) and at least one catapult/ or cannon if/when we can upgrade.

angledefense9gv.jpg

*If we can, get riflemen into those trees south of Angle. I'd like to deny Toku a defendable tile to land on. A farm would give him no defensive bonus. Wherever he lands, move other deployed riflemen on his flanks and dare him to attack us in the trees.
(If he lands at other forest tile, east of Angle, just bring riflemen into angle and other forest tile.) whatever he does, I think bombarding him as soon as he lands will knock out any chance he can use that stack for offense. Will take him a cpl of turns to walk grenadiers to angle in the open, so further attacks will reduce his army even further. Just a mop up from there.

If he doesn't attack, make him! Send riflemen (or grenadiers) to yellow X's for tree/hill defense bonus. He may waste even more of his modern units trying to remove them. This would work well as a feint, if we send our real attack at another city like Osaka (I know), or even Tokyo (better units defending though, so will take longer, higher casualties)

I'm betting Toku will go for Angle, but watch that he doesn't try to go banzai and make a move on Timbuktu.

I invite the SG to poke holes in my strategy. I'm not sure if we have 4 riflemen ready to be put on those forest tiles either, so BlackLuck is going to have to improvise if we don't. Theory checks out though.
*catapult/cannon is the key. If they get inside our border, bombard them. They will not have enough strength left to be a credible threat. One on one we win, defense bonus and health advantage.

How many gren's are at our eastern border? Hmmm, we should be okay.
Good Luck BL.

Turn is complete.
L_M, I did choose Astronomy. Details to follow!
I have a lot of screen shots to edit.

Mrs Blackluck is a bit peeved with me; we're playing KOTOR together, and well this turn took a lot longer than I had hoped. Thankfully we have lots and lots of other games to keep her occupied ....

At any rate, stay tuned!

OT: In an odd twist of fate, I have to follow Scowler not only in this SG but another as well. Scowler is a tough act to follow ... alas, I'm secure knowing I'm not as good as him

Pre turn 1676:

Move rifleman from Naggy to Kushen.

Move skirmisher, rifle and longbow towards forested hill outside Kagoshima.
(I find out later, the units I moved were all city defenders  But well I worked with what I had .... )

Whale is going to be pillaged by a Japanese Caraval
whale.jpg

Cyrus has incense for trade, but we have nothing to trade for him aside from gpt, which we cannot afford at the nonce. The war is a financial drain on our paltry coffers.

Switch Pigpen from rifle to Temple.

Turn 1: 1678
Caraval complete in Gao, start another
Rifleman complete in Djenne. He heads to the eastern front ... *ponders*
Statue of Liberty takes 42 turns.
I like Wonders, but not that much. Too bad.
Instead, I start Heroic Epic here, due in 10.
(I also think West Point should be built here, too.)

Cav from Angle kills Knight sent out by Toku.
cavk.jpg

The Kushens front: There is a grenadier on the wheat, and a gren/pult to the north on a cottage.

Since we need the wheat, I send a cavalry against the Combat III Grenadier on said wheat; cav retreats. Second cav attacks, and wins.

The grenadier/catupult pair remain, but I don't like the odds with any of our remaining units. They should attack us next t urn, and we should win.

I decide to peel some troops from the western garrisons and head them to the eastern front. (Maceman, horse archer sent to Kushens)

I turn science down to 70%. We are now making money.
Steel due in 1.

Turn 2: 1680
Steel in, choose Astronomy.
Steam was 14, scientific method, in 10.
Astronomy lets us bolster our navy; steam is too long, and sm kills monastaries which we haven't completed yet.

Timbuktu completes rifle, starts cannon.
Apparently caravals cannot pillage whaling boats. Interesting. Toku's boat heads east.

Timbuktu rifle, maceman given marching orders to head toward the eastern front.

(The current admininstration blames the rose-colored chap acting as our defense minister.)

Kushens:
Promote rifleman to Combat 1, pinch. Kills grenadier.
Cav attacks and kills 'pult.
The "siege" at Kushens fails, miserably. Still four turns of unrest.

I trade Democracy to Hatty. (Who is now pleased with us.)
I then drain our remaining treasury (750ish gp) and upgrade the three catapuls in Kushens to cannons.
:smoke: ?
Maybe.

The Inca are up astronomy, scientific method. They won't trade either.
Think they'll get physics first?
We have steel, they don't.

The eastern front is eerily quiet.
Toku looks like he's turtling on us.
I send a cavalary out from Kushens across the border to espy the situation.

IT:
Who left me in charge of the troops?
Cav attacked, kills rifleman.
Cav attacked, killed! but severly wounds rifleman.

However:
tokyo1.jpg

Turn 3: 1682
"Fortune favors the bold."
The order to move out of Kushens is given to the cavarly, cannon and grenadier station there.

Cav attacks rifleman who killed scouting cav, wins
Entire force moves towards Tokyo.
invaders.jpg

But, in a potentially monumentally stupid move, the attackers have wounded units. Two medics in the group; we start to heal.

On the southern front, a skirmisher pillages cottage near Kagoshima
pillcav.jpg

Meanwhile
naval.jpg

A naval better brews in the South Seas.
Hold breath, hit enter.

IT:
We lose a caraval
daveyjones.jpg

Turn 4: 1684
Skirmisher pillages cottage near K.
Japanese forces apparently fear us! They cower in their city.

Shaggy completes caraval, starts on University. We need two more for Oxford.

Gao completes Caraval, renews Aquaduct due in 5.

I am slowly taking us off military builds in the West to work on badly needed infrastructure.

I can't help it. I'm having builder withdrawal. :twitch:

Angle completes rifleman. Starts cavalary.

Oh!
(Lost pic ... a great merchant is born in Timbuktu)
We'll need to decide what to do with him.
He can start on scientific method, join a city for a strong gpt boost, or head off to parts unknown for another treasury windfall. I don't do anything with him as I'd prefer the SG to confer.

Naval battle near the port of Timbuktu; the to-date Malinese Navy and embedded photographer .... (edited for content).

We win!

Angle Cav healed, moves to join invaders.

Invaders in turn take a turn to heal.

IT:
Toku leaves his shell
(Lost pics and inter turn log; he attacked units on forested hill, as well as a maceman on the forest next to said hill. He killed the maceman, the skirmisher, and ended with a grenadier and knight in the forest next to our lumbermill. The next turn, he attacked the hill-fortified troops, and lost. A cavalry from Angle then dispatched the knight. Sorry for losing the pictures. I'm discovering I'm really bad with the picture taking .... you'd think I'd have learned by now.)

Turn 5 1684:
Pigpen and Kumbi start on Jewish Monastaries before the New Religon obsolutes them

Walata begins Marketplace. I'm stunned how few marketplaces and banks we have. Once our economic infrastrucure gets up to speed, we should rocket ahead of everyone else in gpt/science.

Troop movements .... I continue to send western troops east.

Turn 6/7: 1686/1688
Timubktu begins Aquaduct (lots of things to build here, but an aquaduct will allow it to grow big without being concerned about health. Ironically, it doesn't have either our religions temples  )

I have no choice but to dismiss the government and place King Lurker II on the throne; we switch to Hereditary rule to qualm the masses in newly acquired Kushens. (Lost a turn and pic here somewhere; suffice it say, we no longer have any angry cities. :hammer: Looks as if the Malinese like their troops )

Turn 8: 1690

Tokyo:
It's now or never.

The commander .... :vomit: ...

Here we go!

Medic cannon bombards city, defenses down to 48%
Collateral cannon attacks, damages 3 units, retreats
-Calvary loses to wounded rifleman
-Grenadier loses to wounded grenadier
-Calvary defeats rifle
-Rifle defeats longbow
-Uhm. Dammit, I missed a cannon here but it works out; cannon defeats grenadier

Calvary defeats catapult.

Tokyo is ours.

tokyoours.jpg

We are gassed.

Everyone of our invaders is wounded. There is no way I can hold this city against a counter attack.

L_M may :spank: me, but I have no choice. I must sue for peace.

And I lose the most important screen shot.

Toku gives us all his gold and gpt for 10 turn peace treaty.
I tried to get a city from him, but a no go there.

We cannot change civics for four more turns.

I need to stop here as yet again I'm inflicted with the dreaded sinus headache.

Summary:
Western Mali switched from military to infrastucture. Western troops also sent east to reinforce Kushens, Naggy and Angle (whose troops in turned allowed our risky Tokyo takeover)

Djenne is building Heroic Epic.
I did not start any city on Statue of Liberty, as it takes 40+ turns in any city, and we have more pressing needs.

Ironforge can now be build.
Hermitage, National Epic, Westpoint can all be build now.
We still are two short building Oxford University.
We don't have enough banks to build Wallstreet, yet.
Lots of cities do not have marketplaces or banks.
A great artist in Tokyo would be grand.

In four turns we need to switch our civics, and badly.

Wow.
Tokyo.
I knew you had a repressed warmonger deep inside you BlackLuck. :groucho:

We'll need a Hindu monestary/theatre in Tokyo ASAP or it may be a cultural casualty to Toku. Kushans needs a similar treatment, and a visit from a hindu missionary.

Tokyo. That took some grapes, BlackLuck. You're a wild man.
10 turns of peace for liq :p
Maybe if I get lucky, Toku will want another waltz with the muffinator after the ten turns are up?

Tokyo split Toku in two; we have enough troops to move everyone east to hold Kushens and Tokyo, I think. Though I slapped myself for losing that calvary on an inane scouting mission, it turned out well as Toku attacked with his Tokyo garrison. I in turn didn't realize my invading force had many wounded units. I didn't head toward Osaka as it took too many turns to get there, nor was there any defensive terrain to withstand sorties. I got really lucky, I think.

I started Tokyo on a Jewish Temple, but if a Theatre is better, change to that. I did not hit enter, so Liq has lots of options.

Four turns we can swith to Universal Sufferage and buy improvements as needed.

As an aside, my war mongering usually consists of flipping cities through culture :p

ok liq is all about washing the blood off the driveways and trimming the lawns.

Np!

I'll see how it goes but if we got enough crap to fix I'll take Bl's 2 turns.

Good news is liq just slept!!!! so raring to go at 11 pm.:crazyeye:

since civ's screens suck in windowed mode try out

capturewizpro is a nice little util for taking screens that merzbow linked to me today.

if you cannot tell, liq isn't exactly scared of monty.

well leaving the game here...

698 gold in bank, we can revolt to any old civics you want.

Monty_sucks.jpg

monty has 4 cav and 2 catapults incoming... I fear more for our towns in walata more than anything else.

sigh so just stuff his ass with units we make in the west... cav is taking an entire 3 turns to make in places like timbuktu...

leaving most of this turn for ya muf.. deal with monty the idiot as you will. DO NOT strip the eastern front to defend.. we need troops in the west as is so just make new ones..

this was a very productive 12 turns in terms of fixing up our economy. at the worst just revolt nationalism and draft away... after you drain the coffers rushing units.

The AI's have crap for cash..

least toku had units, monty is so out of gas from cyrus only a pyscho like him would start another war.

I'm not so worried because I prepped us for a long war, my last set of turns.

see muff, liq did leave you some fun!

use the missonaries to convert pigpen so it can build some temples to deal with happiness.

posting this now so muf can right to it will edit in the minor embellishments.

Cheers!
