SGOTM 01 - madviking

Hi folks!

Looks like I've been assigned to play with you all. (I hope that's alright?)

If we want to squeeze in a coastal city at the mouth of the river in the NE, then I'd settle on the hill to the SW of the Settler. Because we are locked in war with the Inca, the defensive bonus would also be nice. Nevertheless, settling on the flood plain 1 tile S would be a better site for applying the whip. (Though my fog glasses, there appears to be a forest or possibly a forested hill W of the SW hill, and another hill S of that one.) Whatever we decide to do, we might want to move the Settler to the SW hill just to get a look around.

I've gotten some SG experience within the last few months, but I have never played on Monarch. I'll try not to be a handicap. I tend to overbuild my cities, but am never so happy as when I'm at war! I'm looking forward to learning from y'all.

I suppose it is ready to play. Welcome Krockel and Lobster.

I will be out of town this weekend. Will be back Sunday night.

Not sure of the order of play yet, but I would vote to let a few people go ahead of me so I can get back.

Beserker, wanna post an order? Would it be safe to assume you will be starting?

Also, what will the turn lengths be?

I'm first?!? *GULP*

OK... Will play 20 turns.

I'll move the Settler to the hill to the SW and either settle, or move from there 1 tile E.

Because moving the Settler SW will reveal the map to the W and S, I'll probably move the Warrior to the NE/N/N to the hill off the edge of the visible map.

First build probably will be Warrior/Warrior/Worker/Settler (Don't really need the worker until Mining.)

Research path: Mining/Pottery (to get some cottages going)/BW

Any objections?

If I have trouble opening up the save file, I'll let you know later tonight so someone else can start us off without delay.

@joethreeblah: Wow! I'd given you up for lost (again :p). I'll update the lists.

Turn "0" (4000 BC)
Zoom in on the map, and take a closer look at the edges of the fog... There appears to be either another lake or coastal tile to the NW.
Move Settler first to SW hill; doesn't reveal much - more forest and hills.
Move Warrior (hereafter renamed Seti) NE - discover Fish tile of coast to SE, more mountains to the E.

Turn 1 (3970 BC)
Time to found Thebes, but where? :mischief: (Eenie, meenie, minee...)
Thebes founded on hill SW of start. Reveals Stone and Rice within the city fat cross! This was clearly the correct choice! More Cows also to the N, just out of the city limits. Coastal tiles sighted to the S.

Reasearch begun: Mining (11)
Thebes begins Warrior (11)

Turn 2 (3940 BC)
Seti moves NW to hill. View East blocked by mountains. Could there be an isthmus to the East? (Watch! This is probably where our Horses, Copper and/or Iron will be!)

Turn 3 (3910 BC)
*Ho hum*

Turn 4 (3880 BC)
Seti spies more Cows in N.

Turn 5 (3850 BC)
Thebes's borders expand
Reveals more Cows to the W (Jeez. Cows all over this map!) and a Fish tile.
Seti moves NW - tundra tiles appear - we appear to be near the Northern pole.

Turn 6 (3820 BC)
Seti moves NE; reveals Silver at the northern tip of our continent.

Turn 7 (3790 BC)
*yawn*

Turn 8 (3760 BC)
Complete exploration of Northern lands. Will send Seti back home.

Turns 9-11
:coffee:

Turn 12 (3640 BC)
Reasearch discovered: Mining -> Pottery (12)
Thebes grows: 2
Thebes completes Warrior -> Worker (15)
Start moving new Warrior (Rameses) to map lands to the South.

Turn 14 (3580 BC)
Rameses discovers mouth of Nile river and SE corner of continent.

Turn 15 - 18
Exploration continues...

Turn 19 (3530 BC)
Contact made: Russian Empire (Catherine)
Finally! Contact with another Civ! (I thought for a minute there, we were on an island start!)

Turn 20 (3500 BC)
*whistling*

Pottery in 5. Recommend Bronze Working next so we can start chopping, then Animal Husbandry to locate Horses for our War Chariots.
Thebes will produce our first worker in 7.

Only two happiness resource spotted so far - Silver at northern tip of continent, and Sugar to the SW.

The world as we know it:

The Hinterlands:

The South:

There appear to be one or two impassable Mountains just off the Western edge of the map, so there may be a convenient choke point here.
There is also another Mountain to the East of the Range on the East Coast. I have to believe that these peaks are there for a reason - perhaps they are hiding an isthmus leading to an uninhabited portion of the continent?

The save file is Here

Go to it, take!

GG so far lobsterguy!

Thebes have a lot of potential. Lots of food, production and/or commerce could come out of this city. For production I personally never use slavery, but with this amount of food around I believe we should consider it. On the other hand has a lot of beakers been put into pottrey (which I think is a good thing) so then we probably should put down a few cottages by our river.

I think our next research should be AH. For two reasons:
i. Horses. If we have these around is a run for Catherine and Moscow with War Chariots a move I think we can pull off.
ii. The cow is our best tile 3/3/1, that´s like having a chop every 3 turn, well at least when we are building settlers and workers.

I don't have any time untill sunday evening .. dont know if this is too late? Otherwise some1 else go in the meanwhile.

Yeah, AH is the way to go next methinks. Get those cows up and running, we need dairy. BW won't help us until we're ready to expand anyway really. (although we should get it soonish). We should consider getting Fishing to get a workboat for scouting that isthmus at some stage down the line.

Why are silver resources always in such poor locations? We're going to struggle to get a decent city up near there in the early game. Only a fishing village, with no fish!

Turn 21:

Seti moves SW
Rameses moves NW
Russian scout spotted on mountain. Regenerating from what most like was a wound causes by dangerous wild animals (omg)

Turn 22:
Seti moves W
Rameses moves W

Turn 23:
Seti moves SW
Rameses moves SW

Will start playing about 20 hours from now (Just got back in town.)

Some ideas for my next 10 turns:

Once BW completes, will begin Animal Husbandry.

Because there isn't a whole lot for the workers to do at the moment, I am thinking about changing the build from a worker to a settler. The worker prebuild will be there.

I like the desert spot at the choke point north of Moscow for a city location.
a) It is a choke point so no Russians invading the north part of the continent.
b) It will be a canal if a navy is necessary.
c) It has clams and cows in it's fat cross.
d.1) 3 grasslands and 2 grass/hills(+ windmill) - this place could pump out some food = GP city? once we get civil service, we could chain farms to the grasslands.
d.2) 2 grass/hills and 3 plains/hills! Mine those and let the grasslands, clams, and cows provide the food for the miners. This is an excellent production city.

I want to bring one of those warriors home for a little defense.

Ideas anyone?

I agree with Keeper about geting a settler out and go for that desert tile.
Depending on how much land there is south of Moscow will Cathy settle the spot mentioned above rather soon.

Regarding research I agree that AH should be up after BW.
