Welcome to your C_IV SGOTM 1 Team Thread. Please use it for all internal team communication, turn logs and discussions. Subscribe to it to receive notifications, and do not visit the other team threads for this game until you have finished. Please also subscribe to the Maintenance Thread for this game, where teams and staff may post non-spoiler information of general interest. I hope you enjoy the game.

This game will be played in Civ4, patched to v1.61.

This first SGOTM will not feature any advanced variant.. the winner simply will be the team that wins the game at the earliest game date with either domination or a diplomatic victory. All victory conditions are still enabled though, with exception of Space Race, so you have to avoid getting another type of victory (and of course prevent the AIs from winning).

Individual start files for all teams will be available on the SGOTM Progress and Results Page at midnight, server local time, at the start of May 12.

Here's the start position.

Notes:

A. ONLY Civilization4 v1.61 is supported for this SGOTM. All teams will compete for a single award - the Gold Laurels.

B. All teams must play the sponsored variant - victory will be awarded for the fastest victory by either domination or diplomacy.

C. All saved game files uploaded to the server are parsed through software that extracts and archives data about your save, including reload count for each turn set.

Good luck to your team, and remember rule #1: Enjoy your game :D

Hi madviking. You might want to PM your troops to get them to check in. On past experience some players sign up and then forget to check back for progress :)

Hey,

Checking in. There's plenty of floodplains, we should be able to get a couple of whipping sites up pretty quickly. Maybe settle on the plains hill SW, to get the extra production and get cows in the capital city. That also keeps us on a river for quick linking of resources. Do floodplains cause unhealthiness? I can't remember, but that could be a problem down the road.

What techs do we start with? We'll probably want BW earlyish. Are War Chariots any good? (worth delaying BW?)

i agree on that settle to SW across river on hills. it will also give a good defense for a western border if the eastern floodplains are settled first. AI's will go right at the capitol and be slaughtered at our gates.

as for settling east of the capitol with first settler, the warrior is standing on a plains square...

edit: BTW im really new at this kinda thing, so maybe link me to a good instruction thread so im not a total newb

here to check in.

my 2 cents:
-move settler to 6 o clock
why? by far the most effective place to build a city. get in range of the cow while also staying in connection with the forest and having plenty of mountains.
-move warrior to 7 o clock
why? towards mountains to uncover the most fog .. also just a feeling.

@madviking: You said you wanted a team of your own. Does that mean this team will be called madviking?

War Chariots are good, but not great. Give them flanking 2, and they will have a good chance to retreat.

My vote on a start is to settle on the FP to the SW, and start building another warrior for exploration. Research toward Bronze Working so we can get slavery up and running for the whipping action. Try to get the first settlet out about when BW comes around so we can settle and try to get some copper.

Whether we have axes or not, after our second city comes available, start pumping out troops for an invasion.

Thoughts on the map...

HC is probably close by, otherwise we're getting info on the outside world from their score... Also, they've got an early UU and forced war means we're less likely to worker steal from them.

As for our allies, I'm not sure. There are pros and cons for them being close or far away. On the topic of our 'allies', what does locked peace mean? Will they be friendly no matter what, or does it just mean we can't declare war on them? Are we guaranteed a friendly port if it's a continents map?

I would say almost no goody huts nearby, it helps level the playing field.

Also, who are the warmongers here? I'm a bit of a builder, myself, but I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty :)
