SGOTM 01 - V Q

Re: Cathy having boats - if she doesn't have coastal cities... Well wishful thinking I know.

I've never been able to demand (successfully) techs as tribute. Gold sure, but not techs. I've only ever gotten techs in peace declarations. Course since the AI has felt free to extort techs from us, it only makes sense we can do it back to them.

Alright, I've thought enough about this turn - my brain is starting to hurt. ESPECIALLY with all these rumors of a new Nara appearing in this game. Unless something really pops up, I'm going to wait for the next turn to process and the writeup that comes with it.

I've asked for (and received) techs when I'm friendly with someone ... but never as a threat.

A little off-topic while we wait for GreyFox ... has anyone played the Democracy Game? Are they insane? I was just browsing the forum, and I can't believe the amount of discussion/polling that goes on for the littlest thing. Why would anyone want to subject themselves to that?

While I'm not the illustrious personage known as alanh, my guess is that it's not allowed unless you're a specific team cheerleader, otherwise nothing stops you from looking at other threads and your comments could be influenced by what you see.

"The illustrious personage known as alanh" just gave his ok - given that I don't play the map myself and that I don't use information gained by other teams. since I don't play the map and don't look into other threads ... here we go :D :

i) Did anyone try to contact huayna??? I'm not saying that he will trade techs ... but if he's not unreachable for you ( which will most probably be the case) you might see how far down the tech tree he is. Or am I mistaken ???

ii) Regardless of whether you're finishing Cathy soon or not, religion would be the next goal for me. As far as I know she doesn't seem to have any herself. So this would be an obvious plus for you ... in culture, happiness and then whatever (according to your chosen civics).

iii) I understand going for CoL. A Courthouse is nice and effective. But if you're not going to finish her soon ... Theology might be a bit better because of the following reasons: ;)
- You can build the sistine chapel. And with the engineer from the Mids - like I posted earlier - this is no big deal. This will blow up the culture of the city by 10 per turn and give 2 culturepoints extra on each specialist in every city. That's quite an advantage in my eyes if you go for domination. The bonus from an 'early' great artist not to mention.
- If you pick theocracy - I know it's quite expensive :( - you get these blimmin two experience points in every city with your religion. If you're still at war with her --- another bonus. Plus the two points do also go to all early naval units. Given that all other civs are on other continents ...... :p :D

So that's it. I hope I didn't bore you to death with stuff you're already taking into consideration without mentioning.

Waiting desperately for the next 15 turns. Dot

Oh and on asking techs ...

I only did get some when making peace. And even then ... Only when I had been taking quite some of the other civs cities. I'm usually playing prince right now ... and even the friendly nations are not trading techs easily. So I don't really now about monarch. My guess is, that you'll have to be really high above her in the power graph - maybe this will be a reason for her to 'feel' threatened.

Hum ... another comment to be made:

As far as I can see from the screenshots by bobrath (post #259) and the memap by greyfox (post #262) you only have three resources available that increase 'your' happiness. ;)

So if you don't go for :religion: asap how about Metal Casting ??? Since you will have silver and gems the forge will give 2 extra happy faces (not to mention the :hammers: ). Thebes has been stuck at size 5 due to happiness, hasn't it? :crazyeye:

Furthermore the Colossus (double building speed with copper ;) ) will give you extra :gold: in all water tiles --> maintenance! And it's perfectly in the line for optics.

Oops ... stop me if I'm overzealous  .

re: Cost of captured cities... One thing we have going for us with Moscow and Nara Revisited (sorry, Yekaterinaburg) both have gems. Cathy's got 'em all mined up for us, so as soon as we get the culture to work them, those cities should support themselves right away.

Ok, one more thought on war now vs. later... Cathy's looking to hook up those horses in Nara II... and we don't want Horse Archers to deal with... I don't think she has HBR at this point.

re DG @ChrTh: Some people like to discuss things to death ... not my cup of tea though

@dot: good point on contacting HC ... now that we have alphabet, we can do that. But this being a Monarch game and we did not actually do anything to gain us a tech lead (no cottages, no Great Library, did not capture cities, only gain 1 or 2 techs from Cathy), I doubt we will be having any lead.

@dot: re theology, unless we are the first to get theology, I don't see it help. AFAICR, we still don't have any religion.

re war now vs later: the answer, surely must lies in which one helps us better in achieving our objective (faster domination/diplomacy). In that regard, war now is better, IMHO: it saves us the turns wasted to build settlers, we kill one opponent earlier, we have access to more cities instantly without having to wait for them to grow, which can produce units immediately to kill others ...

Edit: me is going off for dinner soon ... will pick up the game when I return (if I don't return too late).

I didn't want to say that you'll be ahead in techs. If so i'd just be :wow:

By saying 'far down' i meant far right or far down the way to - :hmm: - let's say Future Techs. ;)

I think what we can do -- and what dot was saying -- is that we should now be able to look at the diplo screen and see what techs HC has that we could trade for (assuming we weren't AW with him). Dialling him up won't do anything, since he'll just give us a 'shove off' message, but we can still use the diplo screen.

AFAICR=As far as I can recall. It's an amalgamation of AFAIK and IIRC.

Ok, just so we're all clear... ChrTh is still going to take it first (today) and Greyfox will get it tomorrow (or later "today" for him? It's what... Thursday evening there now?) I got a little confused whether or not there was going to be a swap...

No, GreyFox is going to grab it Thursday night his time, then I'm going to grab it Thursday night my time.

Simple enough, eh? :)

Thanx for leaving me puzzled once more ChrTh. :crazyeye:

I'm just not familiar with all these acronyms you're using. So IIRC might be 'If I Recall Correctly'. But what the heck is 'As Far As I ???'

Should be Thursday night at his place since it's Thursday eve in Germany. :hmm:

AFAIK=As far as I know

In the US, evening and night are usually interchangeably; most don't distinguish between them.

Well hopefully Fox gets his turnset out... I am anxious to see if he keeps his finger off the trigger! :)

@dot: Just noticed your location... Wie Geht's! I spent about a month touring over there about 10-12 years ago... mainly in Barvaria. Loved it over there... I think we stopped in Heidleberg... but some things are a bit fuzzy... mmm... Dunkel Bier!!
