SGOTM 02 - Geezers

ah nuts...I was just about to post that I got it...perhaps I should transform myself into a resident lurker instead lol

Summary:
Hatty and Mansa are history.
We are at war with Mao and Kublai and I took the probably last chance to start a war between Bismarck and Kublai also.
Razed a few villages, but not much happened in war up to now.
We are in anarchy for another two turns for police state and state property.

Turn log:
Turn 0 1855:
Make cease fire (not peace) with Hatty.
I can still decide to kill her if I want but don't have to bear war weariness for the next few turns.
Demand the gold of Kublai and Mao.
Pillage land which will never be in our culture.
Upgrade some galleons.
Mansa open border and gift coal, in the hope he will trade again.

Turn 1 1856:
Moving, healing.

Turn 2 1857:
Still moving. Redeclare on Hatty and move in.

Turn 3 1858:
Kill Hatty at no loss.

Turn 4 1859:
Moving.

Turn 5 1860:
Electricty in and Mansa trades.
I get communism for electricity. Bismarck doesn't have communism, so I hope I can do something with it next turn.
Research to flight.

Turn 6 1861:
Bismarck still hasn't got communism.
Try the chance - declare on Mao. Kublai declares on us and I ally Bismarck for communism.
Kill 2 Chinese infantry running around in Germany and move in on his newest village.

Turn 7 1862:
Raze the Chinese village. Lose one cannon.
Kill a loose Chinese infantry around and lose an infantry.
But Mao and Bismarck are settling new villages in former Egypt.
Move some units towards Mongolia.

IBT:
Mao and Kublai destroy fishing nets. Mao lands a stack of cavs and artillery near Memphis

Turn 8 1863:
Move further into Mongolia. See upcoming tank.
Dispose of the chinese near Memphis. Lose an infantry and 2 arty at good chances :(
Revolt to police state and state property.
Declare on Mansa and move in.

Turn 9 1864:
Get rid of Mansa for ever. Keep the city because it is anyway mainly in our culture.
Raze the first Mongol city and kill the tank and artillery invasion.

Turn 10 1865:
Raze Mao's newest village and sink 2 destroyers and 2 transports in it.
Move troops a little further into Mongolia. Bismarck is with us and I hope he will take the opportunity to kill his cavs before he upgrades them to gunship. :)

Take care: Mongols will land an invasion force soon in former Incan land. Rails are still thin there, so one has to look to move troops early.

Hopefully he won't replace them with too many of these.

Looks as though Mao has been busy sitting in the backlines researching.

A good war should distract him. :)

@markh? - Bump.

I'm away tonight & most of tomorrow so I can't take the game until Saturday.

I wanted to wait whether Thrallia would want a set, but as he did not post, I got it and will play tomorrow.

sorry, I was assuming I should wait until it was my set again lol

I should be able to play Sunday or Monday if you and Sam get through it by then...hopefully that's not the only time I could get it, but those are the only times I know of right now.

IBT : Kublai lands units at Ollantaytambo

1) 1866AD : clear that stack at Ollantaytambo

IBT : nothing

2) 1867AD : anarchy is over. Science to flight in 7

IBT : a single Chinese cav enters our territory at the Mongolian border. What does he have in mind with that move ? :hmm:

3) 1868AD : kill that Chinese cav and first units arrive at Tabriz

IBT : Kublai attacks our stack at Tabriz killing one of our infantries

4) 1869AD : bomb Tabriz, for the attack next turn

IBT : nothing

5) 1870AD : raze Tabriz for the loss of two artilleries and an infantry

IBT : Bismarck takes Beshbalik
Kublai takes it back

6) 1871AD : not much

IBT : Bismarck takes Beshbalik once again and Kublai signs peace with Bismarck

7) 1872AD : Kublai has tanks now, too

IBT : Mao offers peace offering 50 gold
I accept

8) 1873AD : kill two Mongolian tanks and a cav for the loss of an infantry

IBT : flight comes in -> rocketry

9) 1874AD : units approaching Ning Hsia

IBT : nothing

10) 1875AD : raze Ning Hsia losing 3 artilleries

Rocketry can still be changed, but it is cheaper than industrialism and I like the fast gunships. Especially countering Bismarcks panzers.;)

Attached is a pic showing the remaining Mongolian empire.

Perhaps you could give us the reasoning behind this move mark? Was it because Bismarck dipped out of the war?

I thought we could finish Kublai faster without being distracted by Mao. Now we can finish off Kublai which will take some turns and then we can go for Mao again. The peace deal expires in 7 turns. I do not think that we will be able to finish Kublai faster than that. After the war with Kublai we have to get our forces together again to strike against Mao anyway. Then with gunships or tanks I think Mao will not make much trouble.

Did I miss something ?

@markh - I don't have a problem with your reasoning. I saw the entry about making peace with Mao. Since there was no explanation about why we had made peace I decided to ask why you had done it. :)

No problem. Uh, I was already worried that I missed something.:) Mao's continuous bombardment of our cities was quite annoying, so I thought it is better to make peace with him as we could not harm him anyway.

At the end of the treaty, perhaps Sam should extort some mroe cash out of him. :) It does look like by the time I get a shot it will be down to Bismark, Mao, and us.

Summary
The majority of the turns involved unit builds and moving troops. This one square a move is really noticeable when you've got used to zooming along roads and rails. :( Key points are below.
  • Rocketry learnt. Started research on Industrialism although mostly at 0% to build up funds for upgrades.
  • Made a pigs ear of the first attack on Karakorum and lost the attack force.
  • We now have some airports and I've started airlifting troops.
  • I've built a few fighters for scouting. We also have a few gunships.
  • Mao has built Macau to the north of Leipzig.
  • We have taken and razed Old Sarai.
  • We now have a rather more substantial force near Karakorum.
  • Land area is just over 55%

I'm in two minds about Karakorum. A forward base would be good but on the other hand it'll probably takes ages to come out of revolt. It will also, eventually, add to our land area. Thinking about it further perhaps Turfan might be a better choice for a forward base.

You're far too pessimistic Thrallia. :) Kublai would still have been there even if my turn had gone as I had hoped.

I'll take the save monday afternoon(around 15 hours from now). I'll wait until then for comments on keeping/razing cities.

I see no reason to keep Karakorum or Samarqand.
Turfan might be worth it as basis for China.

Agree on razing Samarqand and Karakorum. Turfan might be good as base, but I think it is not absolutely necessary. We will see what you will do about it, Thrallia.:)

Had a short look at the save. I would go for industrialism now at full speed. There is still some cash to upgrade. As soon as we have gunships and tanks it will be a very nice slugfest. :hammer:

We could additionally research radio after industrialism for bombers. Might be worth it.

Airlifts
Whilst playing my turns I realised that you can only airlift one unit into a city per turn. Whilst the help tells you that you can only airlift one unit per turn from a city it doesn't tell you the converse.

Maybe you all knew this already but I certainly didn't.
