SGOTM 03 - Team VQ

Hopefully dot can do his thing...
Affirmative, Sir! This is my Got it. :D

Expect my report by Sunday, 01-07-07, 9:00 PM (GMT +1) ... the latest.

And Bob, I'll see if I can catch up with that tumbleweed! ;) (I hope the wind slows down, though.)

Regards, .

 It has become late for me, namliaM.

So my report will be written and posted after work tomorrow. Have a good night or day, depending on what part of the world you're hanging out in. :crazyeye: ;)

Sorry for the delay, .

mmmm just watching tumbleweeds fly by and enjoying lots of soup with this nasty flu bug. Looking forward to your report Dot and our eventual plan to take Beijing. and don't forget what namliaM said: WHIP IT!!!!

Athens does need to be whipped since there is so much unhappy there. Will be a nice GP farm later on. This is moving slow and hope we can get it moving. Scowler asked for a skip and Robo/Furrie are somewhere? Good thing we went with 8 players.

Gentlemen,
I've wanted to play during the weekend.
But due to some heavily needed friendship rebuilding I didn't manage.
So I just started.
I've been playing 'til the start of my fifth turn.
This is what happend:

GreetingsfromChina.jpg

The Gentlemen who claims to be a Great Scientist (just popped) would give us Edu which is down to six turns already.
But Mansa and Vicky are also ready to research it.
So if we'd wanna go for Lib ... what are we up to?

Thoughts?

Hum, that struck me! Man! :gripe: @ the world in general. I think I'll be signing off and be off to bed. So you've got plenty of time to discuss. I'll be back tomorrow around 6:30 PM (GMT +1).

Here's a list instead of a five-turns-report.
  1. We have a decent and healed stack just a few tiles south of Athens. Reinforcements are on their way. I've added in a couple of Crossbows to easily deal with his (now their) melee units.
  2. I've also started a stable somewhere to join in a couple of horse archers.
  3. Athens has a harbour. ;)
  4. St. Pete is unhappy but the hindu temple will be whipped for three pop as soon as the city is ready to regrow one on the next turn.
  5. Cultural pressure on Mansa's city in MR is already working due to a border expansion in Yaroslavl'.
  6. I've been trading around our map and CoL for a total benefit of some 800 or 900 cash.
  7. I've been doing some trading to up our gpt. But I've smoked on JC a bit. But it's still better than before.
I'm somehow sorry for this delay. Hope I'll read a lot of input tomorrow before I'll get us to an even turn #.

Kind regards from Germany, .

Alex will likely take peace and we could divert our forces to China now since we have to go through China to get to Alex any way. I'd say it's what I expected from Chairman Mao and he's one that needs to be dealt with quickly and swiftly. Last time I checked his cities with our scout he didn't have much just a few Ch Ko Nu's and lbms and the odd mace. Send a stack of maces/trebs/1 or 2 pikes/2 crossbow and divert all attention on him.

I don't think we can handle a two front war and Alex is broken for now. I know if we declare later again we get another negative but we simply cannot take on a two front war. We don't have the production and must use our soldiers carefully.

EDIT: be careful JC is part of the block and he's a great backstabber too.

There is no effective counter against China's CKN (does he have that already?)... perhaps phants but we don't have ivory. China has ivory. We can only overwhelm him by force then. Thus I agree with signing peace with Greece, and concentrate on Mao ... that was the original intention anyway ... taking Greece is just for teaching Alex a lesson and to gain a launching pad at China.

If you post the save, you would've gotten a lot more input.

--

Crossbows on defence and Catapults/Trebs will form the counter for the Chuck!

I posted the question about the GS a while back allready... But nobody answered that...
I think Education with 6 turns left is not worth burning the Scientist for.

I dont know how much our best science city is churning in Beakers. 50% bonus for the Acadamy may be nice. But I think we save him for Astronomy/Chemistry?

Why whip a Harbor in Athens? IIRC this doesnt give many specialists... I think a library or Market would have been better.

Leaving Alex will leave us with the "we want our mothercountry" thing ... Great timing by Mao again. JC I see as less of a threat cause he needs a navy to get to us. How ever we can use a couple of Caravels in the water due south/south-east of MR to catch any Galleys traveling our way.

I agree with both previous posters, we cannot handle a 2 front war at this time. Ergo, we "need" peace with Alex + anything he will give us (Gold/GPT)! And focus on getting us the Mids + Putting Mao to sleep ;)

Edit: I also agree that the save might have been helpfull...

Well I've stopped for several reasons.

  1. As you can see in the tech screen above Vicky has Edu! We are down to two turns on it. But to get Lib we'd still need (!!!) Philo! I'm not sure but it looks like at least I've forgotten about that. So we might want to think about a route to go.
    • We could pick up the deal with Alex. It was still the same on the last turn. We could then bulb a bit of Philo and race for Lib. The next scientist will take some 18 (?) turns in Yaroslavl'.
    • Or we could drop the dea of being first to Lib all along and rethink sth.
    • We could just gamble on it, too.
    • Or we could try and trade for philo after taking peace with Alex and getting meditation.
    • Or we could ask around nicely. Maybe Baldy would ust give it to us?
    • Or ...
  2. We might want to think about where we are attacking. I'd go after Shanghai first and then after Bejing. Just to get the cultural pressure out of the way.
  3. I've set up a few stables for HA. I came to think that we might need some. For protection and for attack.
  4. I'd also link the next Great General to a Unit! And promote it with Leadership.
  5. I've whipped a Hindu temple for three pop in St Petes. Hence there are no scientists right now. Make sure to hire two scientists next turn!
  6. As for the splitted stack (units/stacks from left to right in the pic below):
    • A stack of ours. Containing most of our Maces, a Xbow, a Pike, two Cats and three Trebs. (IIRC)
    • A single chinese War Elephant.
    • A chinese HA and a Treb.
    • A stack of ours. Containing 1 Mace (CombatI, Medic), 1 Xbow (DrillI) and a Pike (CombatII). This one is meant to help to defend our two cities there!

:) Greetings from the front! :crazyeye:

Go ahead folks and discuss. :goodjob:
I'm off to bed!
I'll read through all your :gripe: tomorrow. ;)

Regards, .

Horse archer? Hmm ... that maybe the best unit against CKN ... but do chinese has the capabilities to build CKN? I still think we need trebs, pikes and maces mostly.

Why do you consider the peace treaty lousy? What more do you hope for?

If we get mediation from Alex, the scientists would lightbulb philo, right? Then that's the way to go. This also brings us back to the longstanding argument of whether to adopt a religion or not. I still think we need to. If we are indeed planning for a SE, pacifism is a civics too good to miss out.

I am putting Robo on auto-skip status, as I don't know if he is still interested. The lack of participation in the discussion seems to indicate to me he is not. Apologies if that is not the case, but I don't want to wait 2 days and turn out he is still not playing.

Roster
-- namliaM == UP
-- bobrath == On Deck
-- GreyFox
-- Cosmic
-- dot == Just Played

-- Robo / Scowler / FuRRie == Post something to get out of Auto-skip status

EDIT: I know we can get the save from progress page, but it is still a good idea to post a link here. Speaking of the progress page .. hmm ... how did we suffer a drop in score? Did someone whipped mercilessly? ;)

How did we manage to drop in score? Personally I don't think much of the liberalism chase and much rather get chemistry sooner. Finish Edu manually and lightbulb Astro as planned. Eventually Philo/Med will be easily traded down the road. Good work on getting our finances back in order. The AI will beat us to it usually I find unless we sacrifice for it and I don't think we should.

The drop in score imo is probably from all the whipping. At some point it will prove more beneficial getting our pop up. At some point we will need to whip for an emergency and it won't be available. Let's have some backup too just in case. Those elephants are a pain and if anything we need to find the source and pillage it. Perhaps it's Mao that has two sources and is trading to Alex which I hope is broken now. If the trade was ivory for iron then Mao is without iron???? That will disable his ability to build his UU.

So let' move on and do some damage to Mao and we should have taken the peace deal no matter how bad it is. We don't have the forces to fight a two war front. If we had production like a regular landmass I would say go for it but not now it's just going to cost us.

@Greyfox - I saw during my turn a CKN in one of his cities. So he can build them but wonder if he has the necessary iron now. If you think philo is the way to go I support your decision but personally don't pursue liberalism much because 90% I go for military techs such as gunpowder/chemistry and MT/steel. Grens/cannons/cavs what a combo and can still deal with infantry if needed.

I understand your preference for military tech ... I advocate that myself. Alas, my dark lord, Astronomy is a monstrous 4000+ beakers tech. Scientists will at most lightbulb you halfway there ... (more like 1/3). If the remaining beakers on astronomy is less than liberalism, then maybe it still make a little bit of sense to research astro ourselves. Else, the liberalism > Astro chase is the single most worthwhile slingshot in the entire game. Sometimes, to get some military techs faster, you need non-military tech support. Writing is one of them. Liberalism is another.
