SGOTM 03 - Team VQ

I have had a look at the save in the mean time. Yes I too think we are ready for Alex...
Dont know what will happen if Mao desides to joing alex in a crusade against us tho...

I would swap the Gems from Novgorod to Cottage ville,
I would also finish the Galley in Moscow, soon our supply lines will get longer and more naval defence/offense/suttling space is more than welcome...
Whip that lib in Rostov!

Before declaring war, make sure to pick up some cash there is about 1500 gold floating around out there, with some 200 in the covers of alex IIRC.

The WE is not that big a worry but the pike would make it NULL AND VOID (on Alex' offence anyway)

On joining any block... Looking at the map and our current diplo modifiers, Hathy, JC, HC and Cyrus hare up the highest for now. Uppon declaring war on Alex and Mao we get -2 from JC and Cyrus... This leaves us with Hathy and HC as "best friends for now...
Hatty is confused and HC and Buddist... looking at the buddist list, there is too many backstabbers there... IMO

I would go Confused, suck up to Hathy and Mansa. Hathy can Conquer HC at some point (hopefully) and make the Buddist block our mortal enymies.
Hindu and Judaist would be our pray to up our population => Votes.

In MR we want/need some courthouses in the western cities atleast, this saves 2 gpt/city soon to be (atleast) 3 when we start aquiring Greek and Chinees cities.

It will take another 30 turns to get our first GS, then another 11 to get the second... We will have manually researched Education by then...
We should also start Rostov on 2 scientists ASAP to hasten our third GS. We can possibly burn 1 GS on Astronomy and 2 on Sci Meth?
It will take Scientist #3 (from rostov) some 62 turns total to be spawned once we are running 2 scientists.

How long do we hold off on trading for Meditation? And once we do... how far down that path do we need to trade so that our GPs aren't waste lightbulb beakers.

IIRC we only need philosophy after meditation... We are going thru the techtree much faster than I (for one) anticipated... We can self research Education before getting the first GS.
The GS burning order for the closest techs:
Scientific Method (enabled by either Chemistry or Astronomy) => Physics => Chemistry => Astronomy => Biology (if we have Chemistry) => Electricity

After this, the GS will not burn lightly on our way to Mass media... as both Radio and Mass media are way down on the list of burning.... But maybe an Artics will help on burning towards those....

Come to think of it maybe we should research Education before PP, having education will open up Gunpowder where as we need PP in order to open up Scientific Method, which is a while from now...

The merchant will change preference if we pick up Feudalism in a trade
Guilds => Banking => Economics (if we have Education too) => Corporation

So if we want to burn him on PP we should do so before we get Feudalism in trade.

Robo played his turns in RK-07. Why am I up, then? But that shouldn't be a problem, either. I'll have a look at the save for now. ;)

Regards, .

EDIT: I just pm'd him. :p ;)

Right, because he hadn't show up here since he sued his ISP. I assumed he is still too busy happily shredding sandwiches somewhere. I would appreciate he post something to let us know he is still interested.

Plus dot you mentioned you can only play on the weekends ... thus I made you UP.

I'll go and get some sleep soon. After that I'll have a look at the save and post thoughts and screenies. Might not be able to play this this year, though.

Hmm... I thought Greyfox was up. I'll try to play tomorrow morning (10-14 hours) since it's getting messy here in the house, yo!

EDIT: Please skip me instead. Sorry guys.

So who's playing??

Nice spike there on the culture scale. That is a good team and be curious to see what they are doing. Using GA to get captured city out of revolt? Let us now go and serve that cold dish. Alex doesn't have much might be brutally easy or unexpectedly tough. I say we join hindu get theocracy and get some really gifted units. I have to say I really, really hate going to war with single promoted units. They suck. A CR2 mace will have much better odds than CR 1 and same with cats. Cats will chew up archers at CR2 level and wow at CR3. If Alex is the weakling I think he is it might not matter but Mao will be a different story. Protective is tough and if he has any CD3 defenders it makes even tougher. We should have CR3 maces by then including CR3 cats to make that war more effective.

@Robo: I played. I wasn't too sure if you are available so I decided to put dot up (plus dot can only play in weekend). So I would consider it a swap instead (unless you preferred to be skipped).

The following shall clear any confusion:

Roster
-- namliaM ==
-- Bobrath ==
-- Greyfox == just played
-- Robo Kai == On Deck
-- Dot == UP
-- Scowler
-- Cosmic

HAPPY NEW YEAR! (its already 2007 right here!)

OK. It's not New Year around here yet. But I'll have to leave soon to go to a nearby town to celebrate and get drunk and so. And obviously I haven't been able to play yet.

So Robo, if you're willing to play ... grab it!

One More Thing:
About blocking the sea. Alex has a city southwest or west of Mao. So I think we really want to make sure that we'll have a couple of triremes soon ... iff we don't want to repair our nets all the time. :(

Sorry for the inconvenience. :blush:

Regards, .

Blockage

We don't really need more trireme to block. As I mentioned, we can block 2 Greek coastal tiles and cut hist access into our borders.

vqsgotm3-AD0725-blockage.jpg

The 2 triremes we have there should both move east 1 tile to the blue squares. That will block Alex's navy. Good thing is we will have coastal defense bonus, so its slightly to our favor.

The two red crosses are ocean tiles. So, Alex can't sneak into our waters from there. If we are lucky, chances are Alex's ships would stay in that city ... and those 4 ships would be sank when we capture that city.

The only problem is alex wasting his 2 triremes on one of our blocking ships. However, we have one more trireme, so it can kill whatever trireme that remains. Only risk is a bad RNG roll have him sank our trireme on the first attempt. Then, no choice, we have to whip a trireme (or better, caravel) to take care of that.

Lone Alex Trireme

I have been searching for the lone Greek trireme on the west coast in my turns, but couldn't find it. Now, I finally saw it, it is co-located with one of ours.

vqsgotm3-AD0725-trireme.jpg

Before war declarations, borders would be first closed, so that trireme will be deported first. Now, there are 2 possible deportation tiles: one blue, one green. Alex does not have OB with Baldy, so no chance of him going purple borders (see pic below).

The blue one is more troublesome. Our trireme has to play catch up with him if he decided to go north. Fortunately, we are going to nab circumnavigation the very next turn, so we can definitely catch up with him before he reach our north west seafood.

The green circle is easier to handle, since we could move the southern trireme to intercept, and our west trireme can actually attack it right on the turn, so it shouldn't be a problem.

RE: ALex city SW of Mao (Mycenae)

Even if there are a whole fleet of ships there, it will be ages before they can reach our borders. Inconsequential.

In conclusion, I don't see why we shouldn't declare right now.

RE: Cosmic Comments

Yeah, Mao will be different story. But if plans go well, when we face Mao, we should have an army of trebs at our disposal. Those unwieldy thingies eat LB for lunch, dinner and supper, so it shouldn't be a big problem without more promotions. Plus, by the time the war with Alex ends, we should have some CR2 or even CR3 maces.

Nice analyses Greyfox... The green circel should be where the Trireme is transported to, as you are -ussuealy- deported to the spot closest to your own borders.

We could take a slight risk and ignore that Trireme alltogether. If it is indeedtransported to the green circel he will be trapped by Gandhi culture :) for one time having weak culture somewhere helps us instead of beeing a pain.

Do triremes upgrade to Caravels? There is a ton of money out there waiting to be got by us :)

I would feel very much more safe if we had been building a Caravel from Yaroslavl... Instead of the Barracks... We get the military from elsewhere and we need the navy too....

I'm going to be out of action for a short while due to health issues; please skip me this round.

:newyear: to all, and great progress on the last few turnsets. :)

Sorry to hear that Scowler. Happy new year to all. I see on the roster I follow Scowler and can play later tonight. (Late)

So it's war with Greece. I take we are playing 15 turns now.

@Greyfox I do agree that trebs do a great job against lbm so a few of those will make the difference and leave the easy prey for our maces to get upgrades.

I hope it has nothing to do with the new years festivities...

Wow who up now? Robo and Dot are fighting for it, now Cosmic wants it too?? Must be something to do with declaring war on Alex ??? :crazyeye:

Ok Robo skipped/swapped, Dot asked Robo to play, Scowler wants to be skipped for this round ergo me thinking I am up but look up further it's actually Dot that is up. So I will pass until we figure out who the hell is up??????????

There is no more discussion on short-term strategy, what's left is execution. So, whoever can play is UP (except those who had already played, of-course, and that's namliaM, bobrath and myself).

Roster
- namliaM
- bobrath
- GreyFox
- Dot / Robo / Cosmic == UP

- Scowler == Get Well Soon!
- FuRRie = Still on Auto-Skip

BTW, did we ever agree on a scribe?
