Inherited turn. When I looked at Hatty I see we did a real number on Hatty and Cyrus. Only problem is now Hatty’s pop is way too low to have any affect on the vote by capturing her cities. I go ahead and continue with the plan as it has started.

1862

The first of three UN votes of which this one shows us that we are short by 33 votes. Not much but it will take a lot just to get those votes.



We also capture Memphis which now has only 5 pop so it won’t make much difference in the vote. I do a lot of MM and look around at all the cities. We have a lot of unhappy in our empire and do what we can do help that. I do build synagogues/cathedrals and realize afterwards that we should only build things like market/colosseum/forges etc as we don’t need our cultural borders expanding too much since we are like 1 percent away from domination. I start thinking that maybe we should make peace with Hatty/Cyrus and go after Gandhi to bring down his votes since taking cities from Hatty will not help us and Cyrus’s cities are pretty much downsized considerably. There isn’t much more we can do with Cyrus but leave it for now.

Our tanks took a bit a beating at Thebes, however by now Hatty has next to nothing left. Poor girl her empire is pretty much burnt to the ground now. Our naval superiority is just amazing and my only question is this. Are you sure we have enough ships? LOL
Again I go through every city one by one (you don’t know how painful this is when my computer is objecting). Notice that we have a lot of cities without nets and start on many workboats to rectify that. Also start Paris on the space elevator which our GE will do the honours. I was hoping too that we would pop another GE somewhere since 90% of our cities are without specialist now.

OK I have a bone to pick and please don’t take this the wrong way. Why is there so much queuing of units and automated building of fighters. Personally I would prefer that we don’t automate anything and it’s also not inline with the SG rules. I find it confusing when I expect at some point to have the ability to build what I need and end up not even seeing the city. With such a large empire it makes it difficult to plan and address our needs at the moment. SO PLEASE DO NOT AUTOMATE OR QUEUE……

I also check with Hatty to see if she will capitulate although I won’t entertain that either since 50% of her lands adds to domination but just curious to see how crushed she is.

We take Thebes and capture the Pentagon wooohooo. I check with Hatty again and this is what she says:



(doesn’t it look like Hatty ate a lemon LOL) Wow is she pissed but will capitulate. What surprises me is that Hatty has the Pentagon.

Just to give you an idea of how this game taxes a computer well it took like 1 minute just to get Hatty’s dialogue. Upgrading units takes like 30 seconds and am quite amazed my computer just doesn’t say screw this and crash but it doesn’t. Good ole Dell……

We receive a request from the lovely Isabella who will be spared since my wrath is really intended for the idiot Muhatma. So you won’t vote for us aye well that’s going to have to be rectified very soon. (if we had nukes I would nuke this guy into the ground trust me)



It brings her +1 with us but who cares it won’t make any difference. We are just as bad as Toku as the only people voting for us have no choice.

Also after some thought I see no use in keeping ships near Cyrus and they could be better utilized against Gandhi. I make this deal with Cyrus and check out his comment on the first one which made me laugh since that’s the first time I see this comment:



We make peace and begin to move our ships back to the homeland. I was thinking about moving the ships/aircraft carrier at Egypt but by the time they got there the game would be over. We would have to go all around landmasses which would take forever to get them there so I just leave them and move the fighters to Cumae best launching point to hit Gandhi. I do feel we need to make haste as if we don’t take it by the third diplo vote we will have to wait again for sec gen vote etc.

A rather uneventful year except again at every turn checking every city as that damn AI likes to put artists up. Again I see quite a bit queued in Xian or one of the Chinese cities and I really hate that. There are like 4 items queued in one city and again it causes confusion as we need to meet our needs of the moment not what the player anticipated many turns back. Civ IV is a liquid game and I rarely queue even in SP. Ok won’t complain about that anymore but remove a lot of that stuff so I can just focus on the now.

Geez guys how many freaking fighters do we need. I personally prefer bombers. Also I don’t understand why we went for Fibre Optics and not composites just for the stealth bombers and fighters as they do much better against fighters than bombers/fighters. I try to start composites after discovering FOptics but believe it or not Vicky/VQ cannot research as quick as the smart vassal. Monty sees the light and sees we need composites some time ago. Me laughs as by the time he gets it we better have finished this game.

War weariness is the heaviest in Monty’s cities and KK’s cities. What is the favourite whine of the red face there. (I miss my Mommy). Ok what a bunch of wieners. Geez KK down to one city and we still don’t take him out?????? I am of the Tony Soprano philosophy and just don’t like loose ends they tend to bother you later as we can see. Karakorum has like 7 red faces. Fortunately there is lots of food there so keeps growing.

We take Elephantine and realize that when they come out of revolt it will cause domination so need to make sure we can gift them away. I look at MM and he will take cities from us when the need arises. What a balance act. FYI I too notice that revolting time is according to pop and taking Hatty’s cities just not worth it since the pop is now so low. The revolting time is much shorter too like 4 turns instead of the usual 10 or so when one captures a big city. (like 20 or so)

Put forth another UN vote but I feel we haven’t gotten there yet and must make haste to damage Gandhi enough to get our votes. I also start instructing workers to farm over towns in Beijing for growth. I try to use Jewish missionaries to increase happy here and there but as usual at this point in the game they fail a lot and stop bothering with using them. (I really had to rack my brain why we are even building them in Moscow and realized it wasn’t about money but the happy I guess. Again it doesn’t help offering just 1 happy and pushing cultural borders even more so I stop building them)

The UN vote and you’ll see we are now just 16 votes short. Time to mow down Gandhi who as usual is just a pain in the arse.



We also capture Alexandria and sorry no pictures for taking cities but computer takes a long time to take pictures so you can use your imagination instead.

Ships are now in position to take on Gandhi but “Houston we have a problem”. MM and Gandhi are in a DP. Argh I don’t want to fight two civs with such WW going on.

When I looked at the Gandhi screen I realized too why are we even helping these people that won’t vote for us anymore. I go to Isabella and cut her off completely to slow her down and any other AI except our own. PS Greyfox the first thing I did when started playing was gifting movies to Vicky/Monty and they really liked it. Monty went out rented “Chronicles of Riddick” and loved it. I watched it too but it sucked large I thought. How can a planet that has temperature of 300 degrees on light side and -300 on dark side have an atmosphere fit for humans. In the movie they were running around on the dark side of the planet trying to avoid the sun but isn’t it supposed to be -300 but “THE GIRL” runs around in a tshirt and hides behind rocks to avoid sun that burns up people like flamethrower. What idiot wrote this movie. When I realized this stupidity the movie lost all merit to me. Like Star Wars ships battling in space and one can hear it. Hello no sound in space only one that got that right was Alien. (In space no one can hear you scream) (Hollywood must think the average person is really stupid to not notice this)

Ok back to the game as I was watching this movie and playing. Both were irritating me so I really needed to grab Baldy and bang his head against the wall a few times. Stupid baldy and now we have to try and protect him in SGOTM04. Should be interesting.

I ring up Mansa and see that he will go to war with Saladin which will break DP. Only thing is it’s going to cost us 7360 gold. Had this not worked I was prepared to use those ships at Egypt and take all his food away. Only problem is he hasn’t hardly got any but most reliant on sea resources. Of course one would have to traverse completely around landmass to get to Timbuktu or perhaps moving ships further north might bring them into position. If we had jet fighters that wouldn’t be an issue. (jet fighers/stealth bombers not only have much better fighting odds but the range makes it even sweeter)

We take the deal and MM declares on Saladin. That breaks the DP.



We make peace with Hatty and she offers Heliopolis which I take which leaves her with a whopping six votes.

That’s what you get for not voting for us. Now we have fun with the bombers since we have so many fighters/bombers we should make mincemeat of his landmass fairly quick.

We use our ships to take out as much of Gandhi’s navy as possible which should slow him down from making any landings.

1869-1871

Sure enough Gandhi manages to land 3 mechs/SAM/6 or 7 artillery on Roman landmass. Of course immediately upgrade all infantry to Mechs and airlift several units there. This is exactly what I mean by using a city like Moscow for JM’s automated. I went to get some units out of these cities but only could get one tank to help and got another from HC’s landmass. After bombing the crap out of his units they cause very little trouble only manage to pillage our silk and fishies at Cumae. (No biggie he’s already finished and we haven’t even started.) Vicky borders on him too and she’s got a horsehockyload of tank/mechs there so better do this fast before she pushes up our domination limit.

A city comes out of revolt and guess what we are at 51 percent. Immediately gift Thebes to Mansa and that brings it down to 50.42%. Whew that was close and we probably need to gift more but fortunately those cities are so small now it won’t help MM much.

As the years go by we take Gandhi’s food down to nothing and move ships into his waters and deprive him of eating from the shores. His cities are dropping pop fast and hope that we win the diplo vote which is put forth and we will wait to see how we did.

Also after making peace with Hatty WW went down considerably but it started creeping up again towards end of the game.

To keep up with not going over domination we also gift Elephantine and Alexandria. (not biggie both have a pop of like 3 so it won’t do much good for MM but keeps out domination down)

1872 the final year THANK GOODNESS

It was my plan to just finish this sucker no matter how many turns it would take. I felt the team’s interest waning so it needed to be finished to give us a fresh start for SGTOM04.

We got the second engineer to Paris in 1871 and he finished the space elevator. Now we can ride the elevator to the sky.



Without further adieu here’s the final vote and it better be good or Lord Vader goes on a killing spree. Next victim GW as he’s another irritating civ that either loves you or hates you.



Oddly enough we gained 31 votes (which I suspect is from our cities growing) and Gandhi lost 22 votes. So why we only win by 4 votes????? Just glad it’s over and wonder what the formulae is for diplomatic. Not that I care that much at this point as all my games are either domination or space. I hate diplo since it’s so unpredictable as we have seen in this game. I think too (and don’t anybody take this the wrong way) but we get into way too much detail and not enough the big picture. We also need to play more as a team and not as individuals.



See that space elevator in the background. My boys took Gandhi up to the top and dropped him on his head. Now his neck is a lot shorter.

Peter the got to conquer everything cause he can’t get anybody to vote for him…….and hey what’s with the orange guys that’s Holland’s colour. He’s much better at red. (although one can never have too much orange).



As I watched this screen I realized that in the beginning the AI outsettled us quite a bit. After that though there is a lot of red in the text.



This definitely speaks for itself. Moscow was no 3 on the list and London no 1 followed by Delhi which pop started dropping like flies near the end.

The Final Score



Not bad but we didn’t win the SGOTM though I’m sure. I don’t think Trash Team won either and probably someone won by diplo the true way. (A lot of ass kissing frankly not my cup of tea, rather bash heads)

Backdoor diplomacy is a mixed bag and as hindsight is 20/20 we would have won a lot earlier by space race. It took another fifty years after getting Gandhi to friendly to win this. Diplo isn’t that bad and much better than CivIII but then CivIII doesn’t make any sense either. Bombers on an aircraft carrier??? (I’m talking full size bombers not jet/bombers like phantom) CivIV is a very good game but just hogs way too much resources and for some reason more so with recent patch. I hope SGOTM04 isn’t as taxing on my computer. Near the end I was waiting a minute or more just to open city screen. At one point went got a cup of tea in kitchen come back and still waiting. I thought computer crashed and was ready to go to task manager but then it started.

I'm also glad this game is finally over, and agree with what you said. This was a great scenario, but towards the end the demands it was placing on the computer were starting to seriously distract from the actual gameplay. I also think there were times when we went overboard on the analysis, but on the other hand our monstrous score and the ease with which we wiped out the other civs are the outcomes of our careful planning earlier. Hopefully, despite the peculiar premise, the next game will be a little more "normal" and less intense - at least to start with. It's ironic that Gandhi - the one who turned out to be the biggest nuisance in this game - is the one we have to help. And once again, will we get any thanks from him??? :p

At least now we can find out what the other teams got up to... ;)
 
I agree the team did very well in that we could conquer anybody at a whim. We need a good conquest GOTM to show our true prowess. No. 2 showed what kind of army we could build that was so huge there was probably more soldiers than people. No. 3 again showed the same tendency for overkill but yet gave us the superiority worthy of the House of Harkonnen.

Can the warriors learn to find the subtle and use that to conquer their enemies. Brute force is not always the way and sometimes the covert, secret and subtle are the way. The way of the Sith. (hahaha)

Nonetheless we did rely on Gandhi voting for us at friendly but he didn't. I have had him friendly in SP games and he votes so what's up with that? No matter the main thing is that we finished and didn't leave it for one man to take it all on at the end. (yes I am talking about you Greyfox about the Red campaign). It isn't about winning sometimes just completion and finalization. When one can do that then one can focus on what needs to be addressed team wise so that we can win a SGOTM. I haven't looked at any other threads yet but I am sure CFR-W took it again finishing very early I suspect.

Our ability to tech was quite good too and to be honest this is the second game I won on Monarch warlords. (play prince usually now on Warlords)
Getting the GL was a big help and starting off with many trade routes. Towards the end most of our trade routes were within our own empire (vicky/monty/us) so we really lost the edge diplomatically at some point.

The PA might have cost us but it was a tough decision for Greyfox and I support any decision he made there. PA is great for locking an AI in but that vassal hurt us. Not sure that without Monty we would have had Izzy (sweetie pie psycho ***** - my favourite) and Gandhi. Should it have we might have finished early 1800's which imo was no where near a win.

We must think out of the box and get our noses out of the detail. We need a big picture strategy and methodology. Each turn this will change as again Civ4 is a liquid game and changes on every turn. Since we have such a veteran team I am hoping (Greyfox/namliaM/Bobrath/Maquis) that we will come up with something totally out of the box. Let's show those Russian guys that we can pull it off. I remember seeing one comment in CFR last time which pegged Fistful of Dynamite as team plays well in the beginning but peters out toward the end. Truthfully I think this describes us as well but I do respect the fact that the core players stuck with it. Part of our difficulty was the disappearance of many players and namliaM going on honeymoon. (I thought that was done after marriage not some 6 months later hee hee hee)
 
Interesting stuff and now in hindsight we can say "doh!!" turns out we might have been better off just going for pure vassals once we picked up the PA with Vicki. No one voted for us that wasn't "ours" so we should have just made the world "ours" - vassaling as soon as possible. Since Vassals only count half towards domination, we would (probably) had a much easier time with that limit.


Definitely enjoyable and having read some of the other threads, there's a lot to getting a diplomacy win. Interestingly enough, no warlords team is currently going for a space race win!

Religion played a huge role in CFR-W's win as well as gifting the UN away. Brilliant stuff and I think Dot had the right idea from the beginning. Religion can be a great method to gaining friends. We didn't do too bad position wise in SGOTM02 (11th) but I think we didn't do as well in this one. Disappointed no as I did enjoy the game (well the last turn was painfully slow). It just gets me a bit that we didn't win this until 500 years after CFR-W. I feel our team is capable of much better and hopefully that will transpire in SGOTM04.

Generally my SP strategy always is go for polytheism first and get Hinduism. We did have the opportunity to accept Hinduism and guaranteed we would have had the Hindu block voting for us. That brothers and sisters modifier can really add up and get those AI's to really liking you. In our game that would have been Isabella/Hatty/Gandhi/Vicky I think. Had we gone that route we would have shaved 100's of years off our win. By the time we thought about becoming Hindu's we were already too far into the game. (as I at one point even stated that we shouldn't bother with being Hindu's anymore.)
 
The one issue with religion is that once Free Religion comes round... all those wonderful bonuses vanish. I do agree that we were a bit lax in using religion to our benefit.

I will have one mea culpa - in my numbers for voting, I did not include the aggressive AI bit and that would account for Izzy and Ghandi still coming up short for us. I know that when I was doing the calcs, I assumed that aggresive AI was not turned on. Ah well.

Re CFR-W, I'm simply stunned at the speed at which they got to Mass Media. That's blazing fast and I'm not sure I can point to a set of decisions which made it so. Was it intelligent GP usage and beelining? Did it include smart building and MMing to optimize beakers? I'm also surprised that Alex - who hated them - was still willing to take a city. When in our settings, we couldn't pay civs to take cities off our hands.

Thank you for clarifying that as I thought it was a bug or something as Gandhi at friendly should vote diplomatically. Let's just face it CFR are out of our league. Probably a bunch of chess players a game I like but have no patience for.

It seemed we were seeking military superiority over getting our goal of winning. CFR had the majority so free religion would not have happened before winning likely. 1300's AI rarely has liberalism already so it would have been a ways off I think.

To me the city gifting is a matter of proximity more than friendly or non friendly. For instance MM would take Hatty's cities etc etc.... so gifting cities far away the AI will never accept.

But yet in the last turn I played Cyrus would take Setia a frozen iceball city as I checked to make sure I wouldn't go over domination which I almost did.

So why Isabella wouldn't is hard to fathom since Cyrus hated us and Isabella liked us??

The guys on CFR are all from the CRC site and probably use that as their thinktank since they can converse in their mother tongue although most are quite good in english too. Lexad has a link to CRC and I checked it out. It's all in Russian but you can view in English but the translation is hilarious.
 
Np, extending it - the AI Agressive bit is random, so we might have gotten an unlucky roll and had Ghandi with a starting -4. /me shrugs.
