SGOTM 03 - The Real Ms. Beyond

Compromise said:
It seems to me that I've seen diplo votes where the actual number of votes that I cast is different than the number the voting screen said I had. That implies that the populations that count are the ones at the beginning of the new turn (so maybe cities grow or starve) instead of at the end of the old turn. But maybe I was whipping so that's wrong.
I have seen this too and I think you are right, that the votes the game tells you that you have aren't the votes that actually get cast. The votes that get cast are the ones that you have at the start of the next turn. In that case, it would be possible to win by diplo even if you don't have the requisite votes when you voted , as long as you conquered them by the end of the turn .

If we're efficient with our conquering, I think we can finish on my turnset. Given that we don't pass the domination threshold and our cities remain as they are currently (including in resistance), we need ~78 more population points. This can be achieved from:

Giza (10)
Byblos (7)
Mecca (16)
Medina (11)
Damascus (11)
Tenochtitlan (14)
Madrid (12)

Which totals to 81 pop points, and adding to that our own growing cities (like Athens), then we should be able to vote ourselves the victor.

I would like to avoid Gandhi, Kublai and Victoria if at all possible. I don't want to fight against Infantry. Furthermore, we aren't set up to fight any of them. I'm going to wait to hear from everybody else, then I'll play, probably tomorrow.

If we are that close, then we should make sure most of our small cities are on emphasis food ONLY to hopefully squeeze a few more points from them.

I don't think we want to be whipping/drafting anymore when we're this close.

If you think you can pull it off, go for it! This is the time to shave any turns we can off the end.

I say finish it, Kodii; what's more fitting than the captain pulling us into port?!

You'll want to be careful about counting the necessary population. Now that many AIs have Biology, their population is going to grow faster.

From grangerm's report, it looks like number of pop needed for victory rose from 807 in turn 0 to 837 in turn 9. That's 30 pop in 9 turns or a little over 3 pop/turn.

Extrapolating to 10 turns means we'll probably need around 110 more pop than we have now.

I'm guessing that in addition to the cities you've listed, we'll probably need two other cities and maybe a little growth in our own.

I'll be curious to see what the actual numbers are....

I completely agree about not wanting to fight Infantry. You'll probably have to decide whether to take more Spanish cities or open up on Washington too.

Good luck, Kodii; bring it on home!

Well, it looks like we're just about there gentlemen!

I've taken a bit of a break, but it looks like we should be able to win at the next vote. We needed 100 more pop points after the vote from grangerm's turnset. Then we voted ourselves in as SG again. As of now, I'm just waiting for the next victory vote. Stay tuned for the finish and my crazy war details

EDIT: I realize I should probably explain my break for technicality reasons. My computer crashed :). Therefore, I had to reload, but not very far back. I retraced my steps for that turn and continued.

Well, lets say my war tactics were rather... extreme

I began, and on turn one declared war on Hatty and Kublai

One turn later I declared war on Kublai

And a few turns after that I declared war on Monty. Nothing better than four wars at once!

We voted ourselves SG, then we had to wait several turns until we could vote for victory, which ended up being a good thing because I was not able to have enough population until that turn.

Here is Hatty being removed from the Earth:

Congratulations The Real Ms. Beyond! We have achieved our goal :)

It looks highly unlikely that we'll be in contention for a laurel. Murky Waters and the Gypsy Kings finished before us, and the Geezers after us. At least we can be proud that we don't have the Wooden Spoon and that we'll probably have the highest score

Well done on the finish, Kodii!

I've looked at a couple of other threads and it looks like we won't win any awards this time. But compared to a wooden spoon, that's a step in the right direction.

The CFR-W team in particular had a brilliant plan.

I've had a lot of fun with this game, and on the next vanilla SGOTM, I'd be happy to participate.

Good work, all!

I took a look at CFR-W team
1352 - ... but it didn't matter, we win with more than 20 vote to spare!

All I can say is What The????????????????

I can't even comprehend how you can build the UN that early.

I'm sorry Lee but considering that a few of our team members had been complaining constantly on how badly we have played and missed a few turns here and there by miscalculation, imho, our results is more or less OK.

Congratulations on finishing, you played a very good game!

Not sure if any of you are still following this, but with just under a week to go, it looks like we did better than we thought, moving from the Wooden Spoon to just off the medal podium

(how appropriate for a Canadian captain  )

I've christened that heartbreaking position of begging for scraps just off the podium as the "tin cup" award. Memphis Blues came quite close to handing us at Gypsy Kings that cup of misery. Of course, they also came close themselves to falling off the podium into that pot.

You guys are moving up in the world! :goodjob:

We didn't get a medal, but we got closer then expected. If we didn't get delayed with the early China / Greece / Rome invasion mess...

Any one have any idea how to get this one into my HoF? I have the final save, but it is the turn *after* winning so I can't simply load the final turn.
