SGOTM 03 - The Real Ms. Beyond

He's ok with us, but he has the Great Lighthouse and he's conveniently situated on the same continent as Egypt and Mali, which is also the largest landmass in the game (I think), meaning that we won't need more boats to ship troops for awhile since we'll only need enough for ferry-duty, as opposed to full-scale invasion.

Oh, West Point generates GE points, so if we build it in Moscow, Moscow's GE pool will remain clean.

I'm probably going to go to State Property, but quick question: should we consider Vassalage? I'd lean against it, but it will give all of our built units a second promotion.

The Kremlin cuts rush costs by 2/3. Don't we have to be in Universal Suffrage to do this? I'm not sure if we want to switch to that later.

I'm starting to forget what's in Moscow. Can we put both West Point and Ironworks there?

Also, I'm curious to know what our "per-city" cost will be once we're in State Property. I seem to recall that once you pass a certain number of cities, the per-city cost drops back down and then remains constant.

That would make the Great Lighthouse a little less appealing, but I tend to think that the Incan/Egyptian/Mali island (less the northeast extension) is too good to pass up.

I'm leaning against Vassalage. I think both Bureaucracy (esp. with West Point and/or Ironworks) is just too good. Nationalism is good too, if only to draft city garrisons while we build city takers.

I agree with building the Kremlin. I don't have a suggestion about where though.

We don't have any national wonders in Moscow, so we should be able to put the Iron Works and West Point there.

The per-city cost at Monarch, IIRC, maxes out at 6; the Great Lighthouse I still think would be a significant benefit, since it would all but guarantee that each city will pay its way. (+4 commerce from four trade routes, +1 commerce from the center square, and each city costs us a max of -1 net.)

I suspect Moscow is the best place to build those two wonders. Certainly Ironworks (if we build it) because that way we can not only run the engineer specialists, but it will make building the UN by hand go much quicker, especially if we switch back to Bureaucracy.

Wouldn't the guarantee be +3 commerce if all the trade routes are +2 with a foreign civ? But maybe we will be making too many enemies....

Looking at the larger picture, I really can't see how anyone going for a spacerace victory is going to come away with the laurels here. Especially with Mao and Caesar being so close and having no better target than us Russians. I think that confirms what's been said above that we need to be at war for basically the rest of the game.

Attacking Huayna seems like the best next move because of the Great Lighthouse, but I think this is the time for anyone or everyone to offer any out-of-the-box ideas they might have.

I suppose there are some alternatives: If our Christian buddies can be further coddled with civic changes, or bribed into wars we can join in, etc., then maybe that's a way to concentrate our efforts.

Or, we could decide that there are enough backward civs with decent high-food cities on the map (I'm thinking of the Americans here....) that we can skip the more advanced civs--such as Egypt and Japan--and just concentrate on picking up cities from the tech trailers.

Another alternative is to take over the Indian/English continent. It's close to our core cities, so the transit time is low, but it pretty much destroys any chances at getting some diplo votes from any other civ.

On archipelago Monarch, I thought cossacks were going to be more dominating than it looks like they will be. I thought we'd be able to own the world with them, but it seems like there are at least a few civs who will not be far behind in developing their own cavalry. I suspect English riflemen aren't all that far away.

I guess we could go on a massively aggressive run and declare war on just about every other civ (sequentially, of course; not all at once) while capturing and pillaging their good cities, their food and whipping them down to size 1 before abandoning them.

This would be a strategy to get to 62% population by reducing the rest of the world's population rather than increasing our own. (At least it solves the 51% land problem!)

I just don't know if it's more efficient--and effective--than the more straightforward approach we're on now.

Anybody else have any oddball strategies that we might try?

1. We need to remove Mao from that island and eliminate Alex altogether.
2. I would start the next war with Hatty directly across the water from the northeastern part of our home island. Then move outward from there.
3. I agree with Lee, non-stop war from here on out. We need to have a city with a drydock cranking out frigates (over on Roman island works). We need to have at least two cities on cossacks, one on a defender unit and one on catapults.
4. All the other issues I will leave to smart minds than mine. If you guys think we can get another GE, then use the one we have on IW.

The Executive Summary

  • Greek and Chinese Wars
  • Greece is dead.
  • War weariness is hitting Rostov and Novgorod. It may dissipate next turn because Greece is dead, but we're still getting a lot from Mao.
  • China has been reduced to the two cities on the ice island.
  • I have not yet made peace with Mao, but I strongly think we should: it will kill our war weariness. Mao is willing to give Shandong (one of the junk cities) and his world map for peace. He's not willing to give Replaceable Parts. I haven't tried to extort any of the other techs from him.
  • Things are not organized: I took China's last city off the ice island a turn ago, and Greece's this turn, so troops are not in position for the next offensive. Some are on boats, some on land. I've tried to move them north, in general. The Chinese/Greek island is garrisoned with a combination of drafted muskets and drafted maces.
  • Technology
  • Victoria and Hatty both have Scientific Method and Chemistry. Tokugawa has Chemistry.
  • Louis, Huayna, and Mao all have Replaceable Parts.
  • We have Communism and just finished Steel this turn. We don't have much cash reserve to deficit research Physics.
  • Civics: I switched to State Property. We are now running Representation, Nationhood, Slavery, State Property, and Free Religion; I think these are our endgame civics.
  • Great People: We have three great people: an engineer in Moscow and a scientist and artist in St. Pete. At this point, I feel rushing the Iron Works is the right decision: the extra production and engineer points could be very helpful and it's looking like there's a chance we'll see Steam Power for coal this game because of the AIs researching it. I'm also inclined to use the scientist and artist to start a golden age (after rushing the Iron Works; we don't want to risk our great engineer being consumed). The great scientist will give us +3033 beakers towards Physics, but I suspect a golden age will give us similar numbers. We currently have 174 population in our empire. (I back-calculated from the scientist's light-bulb value.) If we assume about 3/4 of them are working squares that produce commerce, that's 1305 commerce over the ten turns of a golden age, multiplied by our buildings. Our average multiplier is probably around 50%, so that's about 2000 commerce all told. I've stagnated St. Pete's growth for the moment: it will produce another great person in 16 turns, hopefully a scientist or engineer. We need to discuss how to use our great people.
  • Wonders: Novgorod is one-third of the way through the Kremlin. Once the war weariness ends, it will move along at a good clip. Moscow is about two-thirds done with West Point, and will be done in ten turns even without a golden age or the Iron Works. I have been whipping cossacks out of Athens on a three turn cycle, putting hammers into a cossack, whipping it, sending the overflow to the Globe, and repeating. One more whipped cossack should finish the Globe; we could try whipping a cannon there, but cossacks conveniently generate a nice amount of overflow.
  • Army: I haven't upgraded any units. I built some catapults to help bombard Chinese and Greek cities, because we had one at the beginning of my turn set. We now have six total, only one promoted to accuracy. I think we may want to consider suiciding them rather than upgrading them, because they're all green units. We have a good collection of city raider macemen begging to be upgraded, but we can't turn off science with Physics at risk. We have twelve cossacks, some of them well-promoted.
  • Navy: We now have three caravels, six galleons, and four frigates. I decided to put our drydock in Antium: land troops from the city were taking a long time to get to the front, so I had it building ships most of the time anyways. It has a partly-completed frigate waiting for the overflow from the drydock. I'd keep it building ships for the rest of the game. I think we should keep some caravels to scout out the defenses of people we don't have open borders with; if we want to upgrade one, I suggest the combat-1-promoted caravel that I have watching Mao at the moment.
  • Workers: The Chinese/Greek island needs a lot of improvements. I've shipped most of our workers there. Currently, I have them building roads on two-move tiles because I wasn't quite sure what to do with some of them until we got some border pops and cities came out of resistance. Two workers are on our main island, improving spice and iron city, and making ready to change tiles at our developed cities. Another is on the Roman island, finishing up some improvements there. I regret ever saying we had too many workers: there are a lot of improvements that need to be created, and a lot more that need to be reassigned.
  • Tile Improvements: I've been building a lot of watermills. Right now, they're strictly better than farms. Once we get Biology, farms get stronger, but with Replaceable Parts and Electricity, State Property watermills are more or less the most productive tile in the game, so I think we should keep building them. I've been hacking down forests: we don't need health, the forests haven't been giving us much anyways, and even with lumbermills, before railroads, State Property workshops are superior. Workshops are also superior to mines until railroads: for this reason, I'm inclined to think that once we get Replaceable Parts, we should go on an aggressive windmilling program, since Electricity also makes them rather good; and the extra food will let us build more workshops on the flatlands. I left some signs on the map indicating some terrain improvements and irrigation chains I suggest.
  • Chinese and Greek Cities: I'm not quite sure what to do with many of them right now. I'm going to try take another look later, but for now I'll note that almost all of them have academies, so it seems to me we should emphasize commerce in general. A combination of windmills, watermills, farms, and inherited towns should give us good commerce, in general.
  • New Cities: I founded spice city (Yakutsk) and iron city (Vladivostok). I have a settler building in Shanghai (whip it when possible) for the western cows/clams spot, and a workboat on the way for the clams. We should whip out another settler from the Chinese territories soon for the eastern clams spot.

My Turn Log

1553 AD

As on all my turns, I turn back on the governor in all the cities. At least this time, most of them are set to it already, so I don't have to go in and check each city to determine reasonable emphasize settings for it.

Before changing infrastructure builds, I trade Saladin Education for Banking + 150 gold: he's way down the score chart, so neither a threat to us nor likely to be anyone's worst enemy. Our science rate is pretty appalling at the moment, so banks will help a lot. I sell Monte Paper for 280 gold. I want to sell Izzy Education for 450 gold, but I think she's Louis' worst enemy so I don't.

A few cities need whipping, so I do some of that. I don't think we need to worry about maxing out growth except in our most mature cities, because we're going to get Biology soon, and we could use some more infrastructure. I whip a lighthouse in Yekaterinburg (essential!) and set it on a forge. I set Lahore on a forge, but I'm going to whip it once it grows to size 6 for a settler; I give it another farm from St. Pete, which doesn't need more food at the moment, to help it grow. Shanghai is working on a lighthouse, but doesn't have any ocean food resources or a granary; I change it so I can whip the granary next turn. I change Athens to a cossack: I'm going to stack a lot of whip unhappiness here in anticipation of the Globe canceling it all, sending the overflow into the globe itself. Rome is past its happy cap and has plenty of food, so I switch it to a bank with plans to whip that next turn. Neapolis needs culture and is near its happy cap, so I switch to a Jewish temple for whipping next turn. Antium has lots of food, so I change it to a cossack for whipping next turn.

I set a couple of cities with no good reason to do anything else on maximize food/production/commerce: Lahore, Shanghai, Sparta, Yekaterinburg, Neapolis. I put Rostov on the same: it's about to hit the happy cap, and it could use some more infrastructure. I put Athens and Yaroslavl' on maximize food/production, the former to get the Globe done faster, and the latter because it's about at the happy cap and we need more production. St. Pete is past the happy cap and not running great people; I put it on maximize food, production, and science, then force an engineer, since it still needs to burn off whip unhappiness. I assign an engineer in Moscow for the GPP.

Rostov is due to finish a cat in one turn, I set it for a bank next. Novgorod will build a cossack in 6 turns, and I'll have it start on the Kremlin when that's done. Moscow will build a cossack in one turn, and I set it for West Point next. Yaroslavl' is building a cossack for four turns; I set it for a market next, since as much as we need military, Yaroslavl' desperately needs the extra happiness.

I reassign a farm from Antium to Cumae to get that city growing. I also wake up the workers and have them farm over the silk at Cumae, and next turn the silk at Antium. I also send one to build a windmill on the plains river hills south of Cumae. We have a worker on the main island building useless cottages, so I reassign it to start prechopping forests at Novgorod and Moscow. I move the Mainland Shuttle down to the Roman island in anticipation of moving up some workers to help with that.

1556 AD

Banking opens up Replaceable Parts. Huayna and Mao both have it already! This is not good, but there's nothing we can do about it right now.

I do the whipping I mentioned last turn. Nanjing comes out of rebellion and I whip a theater there. I start research on Communism, due in seven turns.

I move units into position to hit Beijing, and start bombarding it with the single catapult there. We need more catapults, badly.

1559 AD: Nothing of note.

1562 AD: I was sloppy and let a caravel of Mao's slip up near Athens. The RMBS Kirov loses trying to kill it, but the Kara finishes it off.

Antium christens a new RBMS Kirov, a frigate. I set it to catapults.

1565 AD: Hatty offers Economics + 60 gold for Printing Press, I refuse.

I finally finish bombarding Beijing. I promote two new cossacks to flanking and send them in, hoping for a withdrawal, but the first dies. The rest of the army wins and Beijing is ours.

1568 AD: I ship some workers over to the Chinese/Greek continent to start rebuilding pillaged improvements and redesigning tiles. The army heals in Beijing.

Yaroslavl' is very unhappy. I decide to whip a marketplace, in the hope that it will grow back before the end of the game.

1571 AD: Cyrus offers silver for cows--I take it!

I've settled Athens into a cossack-whipping cycle: start a cossack, whip the cossack, put the overflow into the Globe, repeat.

Lahore whips a settler for spice city, and Novgorod starts a workboat for the clams.

1574 AD: The army advances next to Guangzhou. I've had RBMS Moskva bombarding the defenses for a long time, so I expect to take it next turn, or the turn after.

1577 AD: Communism comes in; I start the Kremlin in Novgorod. I move some troops on to Hangzhou to start bombarding it with our one accuracy catapult, while planning to take Guangzhou next turn.

I revolt to State Property. Before the revolt, we were getting +198 gpt at 0% science, and paying 55 in distance maintenance. It takes two turns of anarchy. (Note that we'd also passed to three turns of anarchy to flip two civics, so the savings of changing to Bureaucracy or Vassalage would have less than I'd talked about earlier.)

1580 AD: Huayna offers us bananas for spices; I switch it to cows and make the trade, since we're having health problems in a few cities.

I found spice city, Yakutsk.

I knock out Guangzhou's defenses, promote some more cossacks to flanking for the initial low-odds assaults, and take the city without any casualties. Other units advance on Hangzhou.

I take back everything I ever said about having too many workers: there are lots of things that need to be done on the Greek/Chinese island.

1583 AD: A just-produced Chinese cavalry kills a shock-promoted mace, then a cossack teaches it the error of its ways. I start bombarding Hangzhou. We come out of anarchy, and we're up to +237 gpt from State Property.

1586 AD: We birth a great artist in St. Pete--yick! Thinking about it, we might want to use an artist and a scientist to trigger a golden age: that might get us as much or more science than scientist + artist lightbulbs, at this point in the game, and better yet, will get it earlier, on more useful techs.

I advance on Chengdu and continue bombarding Hangzhou.

1589 AD: Hangzhou is on a hill, so the first cossack dies, despite having better-than-even odds. I move cossacks into position to take Chengdu next turn.

St. Pete whips out a settler for iron city. I draft some muskets from the Roman cities (since they're smaller) to serve as defenders for our newly built and acquired cities.

I'm chopping the remaining forests on our main island: they don't give us any health benefits because we only have one per city, State Property workshops are now the most productive tiles we have (better than mines!), and they'll help speed up the Kremlin and West Point.

1592 AD: Saladin offers open borders and I accept, figuring that we'll need more people to give us trade routes soon.

Chengdu falls without any casualties on our part. Our armies head towards Tianjin and Xian.

I found iron city, Vladivostok. I draft some more garrisons from the Roman cities and Sparta.

We have enough cash stored, so I begin research on Steel. It's due in seven turns.

1595 AD: Hatty demands we got to war with Montezuma. Since she's going to be a target soon, I decline.

1598 AD: Tokugawa declares on Izzy, which is good for us. Hatty makes peace with Montezuma; shocking that.

I move armies and bombard Xian.

1601 AD: Louis demands we cancel deals with Mali. Why is Mali his worst enemy? I really hate how the diplomacy works sometimes. I'm going to go against previous discussion here, sorry: we're already close to the maximum possible bonuses with Louis, and he's still only Pleased with us. I don't think that changing to Christianity or Hereditary Rule will work in the last stages of the game: we won't have enough time to gather bonuses, and I think that at that point, we'll get more votes from rushing ahead with more conquests because of less anarchy.

I'm beginning to suspect that we should have done was look up who has Representation as a favored civic and make friends with them. It may not be too late, but honestly, I've thought since the beginning of the game that we'd have to conquer all the votes ourselves, and I still think so.

Victoria has Scientific Method :(.

I bombard Xian some more, send in the troops, and take it with no losses.

1604 AD: I take Tianjin and start bombarding Thermopylae.

1607 AD: I lose a cossack attempting to take Thermopylae. (Again, better than 50% odds, and I haven't gotten a single retreat yet.)

1610 AD: I refuse Monte's request to cancel deals with Hatty-not quite yet.

Two more cossacks clean up Thermopylae, knocking the first AI out of the game.

I'm going to stop here, because the team needs to decide how best to approach getting Physics, and who to attack next. The rest of my notes for this turn are in my executive summary.

I think we have two options for our next target: Huayna, to take the Great Lighthouse and prevent him from developing Rifling, or Hatshepsut, because she's the score leader and a competitor for Physics. I think we should delay as little as possible: the cash from conquered cities will help us research Physics, and we're racing against the other teams for the victory. We're behind them in score, so we need to keep conquering and hope that our situation is better than reflected in our score.

I'm leaning towards Hatty first, just because shes more of a threat than Huayna is, less than a friend than Huayna and closer than Huayna is. She also has more cultural strength, and many of Huayna's cities will be cramped after we capture them because of Hatty's culture. I'm going to take a look at the save now.

Stemming off of Compromise's oddball strategies, what would happen if we began to woo our friends, and declare war on weaker civs who have lots of high-food cities (like Washington). Its probably faster to befriend people than to take over their land and wait for those cities to grow back.

If we do use the GS for a golden age, I would much rather use the Physics GS to do that. That way we can ensure we get the Physics GS. So if we follow Iainuki's suggestion, this is how the great person dance goes:

GS -> Lightbulb most of Physics
GE -> Rush Ironworks
Physics -> Free GS
GS + GA -> Golden Age

Does that sound good?

That's a viable option. I forgot to check how much Physics costs--can someone, when they're looking at the save, find out how much our GS will do for us?

Good job guys.

If we use the GPs on a GA, then I think we should follow Kodii's advice and make sure we get and use the Physics free GS. The scientist and artist would give around 5000 beakers on their respective techs. If our best guess is a GA gets us 2000 commerce and 1600 (just a guess...1300 * 1.25) hammers, is that really better than 5000 beakers a little later? Probably.

As for attacking, I would be most inclined to attack the civ (between HC and Hatty) that we are most set up to attack logistically, most fearful of in the future and best route to other civs so we minimize our walking/sailing.

I will be out of town starting tomorrow until Saturday Feb 3. If you don't hear from me before my turn comes up, just skip or swap me. Good luck everyone.
