SGOTM 04 - Geezers

How long do we have before this SGOTM ends? Have any of the other teams finished yet?

The cutoff date has been about three months for past SGOTMs. So far a cutoff date hasn't been announced. Your guess is as good as mine as to whether other teams have finished.

EDIT: I notice Gyathaar's posted in The Real Ms. Beyond's thread so maybe they've finished? It might just be some clarification on a rule though.

Summary

Pretty quiet turn. Most of our zerks have been upgraded. Ditto trebs. Ghandhi is bombarding Old Sarai & Tiflis from the sea. We've overtaken Ghandhi in score.

Turn 320 - 1550 AD
Move Tiflis galleons towards east coast. Rush the libraries in Ning-hsia and Napa Valley. Rush courthouse in Sanchu. Reduce research to 20% to get money for upgrades.

IBT:
Peace deal with Izzy expires.

Turn 321 - 1553 AD
El Do Grenadier -> Gren, Ning-hsia Library -> galleon, Napa Library -> Barracks, Sanchu Courthouse -> Barracks.
Discover where Brennus has been hiding all his troops.

Spoiler :

Turn 322 - 1556 AD
Notice Hannibal's founded Tacare south of Napa Valley. Look's like he's running short of space. Upgrade 2 zerks.

Turn 323 - 1559 AD
Nidaros Gren -> Cannon, Uppsala Galleon -> Cannon, Yayoi Galleon -> Frigate. Rush Pike in New Karakorum. Upgrade a zerk. Upgrade a treb to cannon.

Turn 324 - 1562 A
IronSheep Gren -> Cannon, New Karakorum Pike -> gre, Sanchu Barracks -> Gren, Old Sarai Gren -> Theatre. Upgrade 2 more zerks. Scouted Verlamion:

Spoiler :

Turn 325 - 1565 AD
Napa Barracks -> Gren. Upgrade treb to cannon.

IBT:
Ghandhi's frigate starts bombarding Yayoi.

Turn 326 - 1568 AD
Nidaros Cannon -> Gren. Upgarde 2 zerks.

IBT:
Ghandhi continues bombarding Yayoi. Another of his frigates pillages clams by Tiflis. Mehmed sneaks in a city N of Ning-hsia. :grrr:

Turn 327 - 1571 AD
Upgrade zerk. Rush galleon in Ning-hsia. I decide it's not worth founding the gold city if we're going to be moving in the not too distant future. Notice we've overtaken Ghandhi in score. :( Looks like Brennus has been upgrading his troops:

Spoiler :

Turn 328 - 1574 AD
Ning-hsia Galleon -> Theatre. Upgrade a treb and zerk. Rush theatre in Old Sarai as it's starving after Ghandhi's pillaging.

Turn 329 - 1577 AD
Hannibal asks for Steel in exchange for Constitution. Not that keen on Constitution but agree to keep him happy. Get him to throw in the last part of SciMeth as well. He won't trade his other techs. Start Replaceable Parts as a placeholder. Set research to 0%. Mehmed wants to trade clams for wine. Agree. New Sarai Gren -> Bank, Old Sarai Theatre -> Galleon.
We have oilby Sanchu and New Sarai. Upgrade two trebs to cannons. Scout Isca & Gergovia:

Spoiler :

Turn 330 - 1580 AD AD
Hannibal wants stone in exchange for crabs. :crazyeye: Ok. Nidaros Gren -> Bank. Perhaps a bit :smoke: but Nidaros is generating lots of gold and more is always better.

Note that units cannot be upgraded on board ship so upgrade units before loading them. If they're already loaded then you need to unload them to upgrade. It's rather disconcerting that we've overtaken Ghandhi in score. The top two civs are Hannibal and Mehmed. Perhaps we should evacuate Yayoi to encourage Ghandhi to capture it.

Good work, Sam. Are we ready to launch the Great Fleet yet? We're all waiting for that with breathless anticipation.

I hope it doesn't get sunk halfway across the ocean. Imagine that.

Sounds good ! :goodjob:

Sam - just played
Htadus - UP
Jenarie - on deck
Mark
Harbourboy
Thrallia

The most advanced team is at 1750AD. I can't believe that useless Gandhi could have built an advanced space ship by then.

Perhaps he got some land off them at an early stage? However you're probably right.

Are we ready to launch the Great Fleet yet?

That depends on Htadus. :mischief: There are seven galleons by Nidaros although some of the units are awaiting upgrades. The frigates are up by Yayoi.

Sounds good Sam, I think we're almost ready to at least begin an offensive against Brennus...nearly all his cities are low on defense, and our amphibious grens could have some fun against those cities(won't even necessarily need trebs for some of the cities since grens ignore walls ;))

While the rest of our Fleet is built to bring over all our belongings, our intrepid Grenadiers can secure our future on foreign soil :D

Got it. Looking at the save. Good progress.

It appears we will be doing some major cat upgrades….in the new captured City while units recover.. We have enough units to go attack along both coasts. I may grab a few city defenders to go along. I think we should take Durnovaria and Gregoria on turn 4, and take Iska after that with the help of follow up group while units are recovering. After that the Cannons will get their chance to prove themselves. Sounds fun. :D my biggest concern is not having a Frig nearby, but they can join.

I want to play tonight but I am tired so better not. Please leave ideas.

How do you feel about using 1 suicidal cannon if the best Grenadier odds are less than desirable? I typically like it since all units are softened in the process. My newest practice is to take two good siege units to lead off the attack and bring n+1 city takers. n being number of defenders. It rarely get the second one killed. I used to have to bring twice as many as defender to do the same. Of course this is very overpowered if the city is defended with just 1 unit.

Yayoi should be abandoned within this turn set, I will rush units there for the duration to just 2 or 3 before vacating it. Man….never done this before and feel wrong. By the we should not do a wholesale evac any time soon. Lets give him cities ...one at a time over several player turns. For the near future, lets draw a line at the Cap.

It look like there is no way to avoid hitting Mehmed and Hanny. I think Hanny due to the proximity.

I just had a fleet of 4 artilary and 2 granadiers sunk by Hatty recently and I have issues now. I hape to recover soon.;) Or I am going into therapy.

Ok I need to sleep.

I agree with the suicide collateral damage unit to lead off when appropriate.

The main thing I would add is to remember that Brennus has his main army holed up in one particular city so we need to be ready for the counterattack when it arrives. I suspect he will only have the resources for one big counterpunch but we need to make sure it doesn't knock us out. Maybe we need to batten down the hatches to weather that first storm and when his attacking forces have expired then we should be able to take out the rest of the cities with a bit less hassle.

I did not have a look at the save. Can we bring someone into war with Brennus to distract him ?

Sending in one or two suiciders first is a good idea, but I have an idea to beat your idea of holing up and waiting for Brennus to attack with his stack...

Why not send our largest group of cannons on a few galleons and keep them at water near his stack until we see where it is going...we'll then land our cannons in that city and pre-empt his stack rather than letting him attack our new city(we get no defensive bonuses in a newly captured city)

@mark: I bet we could probably get Izzy to declare war on Brennus. I think we could get Washington also if he wasn't vassalized to Hannibal(who I think we'll need to knock down to prevent him from beating Gandhi)

Well I played out to 8 turns when my computer crashed. But I think we were loosing Isca back to Bren when it happend. Here's what was done so far and I will finish tomorrow night. Sorry, got a early field visit in the morning.

1580 AD (Turn 330) Rush Frig in Yayoi. Move the first group of Task force Z(erk) with Frig cover. Recon Duracorturom has a LB and a Pike. Moving units to take that city too.

1583 AD (Turn 331) Eldo:Gnade>Cannon,Yayoi Frig>Frig Moving Units. Promoted a sword to a Zerk. First back up group follows. No deals.
IBT: G dropped off 2 granadiers and a cat near Haitha.

1586 AD (Turn 332) Upps:Cannon>Gallian, Promote both granadiers with gunpowder and second star to kill Gandhi's 2 G'nades. Knight clean up the cat. Promote Zerk to G'nade. Durnovaria only has 4 defenders. Splitting the Task Force Z.
IBT: G drops off 3 granadiers, 2 cats and 3 Elephants near Haitha. Basturd.

1589 AD (Turn 333) Scramble units to Haitha. I think he id going to use cats to drop defense. Promotion time. Almost done chopping Hannies forests before his culture pop. Need a couple of cannons in Haitha. Rush Frig in Yayoi.
IBT: Gadhi's frig die attacking newly promoted Frig by Nidaros. Issy come asking for Steel without a demand? SInce we want her for future endevors, we agree and she become cautious toward us....and smile? Oh I do not like her. Can we kill her off later too. No attack from G's stack. They split and bombard. Thanks.

1592 AD (Turn 334) Units in Haitha massacre the would be attackers. Only a Gnade and 2 elephants heading to ElDo left. A cannons waiting for them. Trade Philo to Brennes for his 210g. Its time to say Hi. We take the 2 cities and loose 2 cannons and 1 Zerk. Yeah I messed up. Instead of sending a G'nade.

1595 AD (Turn 335) Kill off the remaining 3 Indian units. Lost a healthy Knight to a damaged Phant w/78% odds. Grrrr. Promoted all the Seige units to cannons. Oh we got an achadamy in The Promised Land. Next turn should be tricky. New Kara revolt...so I whip the G'nade and trade food for lux to our new bud Izzy.
IBT: 1 cat attack the defenders in Isca. Nothing else. We are in the second spot now. We get a GG. Sending him south to new Sarai.

1598 AD (turn 336) Frig seige of Bibracte(5 defenders) has begun until our cannon Galleys show up in 2 turns.
IBT: Bren is moving 2 great leaders, knight and a war elephant toward Isca with 5 more units. I hope 6 cannons and 4 granades can hold it. Washington snuck in LA to claim the gold in the south.

1601 AD (Turn 337) One more defender in Bib. Nidaros complete Bank>Grenadier. New Kara started a Bank last turn and it is the only city having ww. So no switch to PS.
IBT: Bren attacked, we lost 2 units and Game/computer crashed.

Interesting turnset so far.

Not sure that it was a good idea to split our forces. The first priority should have been to get a foothold with enough forces to withstand the inevitable counter attack as Thrallia (?) pointed out. It's a pity you weren't able to attach the autosave from the turn before the computer crashed so we could see the current state. However Brennus has presumably attacked with his best units first so we may well do better against the rest.

PS. Remember to repeat your moves as exactly as possible when you reload from the autosave.
