SGOTM 04 - Geezers

It's all getting very interesting now. This game objective is fascinating.

Jenarie, I am having a day off from Civilisation as I all Civ'd out after my 16 frustrating attempts at G-Major 11. So you can finish your turns and I will pick up tomorrow or the next day.

Anyone have any ideas how the other teams are going?

Anyone have any ideas how the other teams are going?

Pass. :lol: Heaven only knows what CDZ are up to though. They don't seem to have budged for ages. :confused:

Part II

IBT: Gandhi lands on the gems west of Haithabu.

6) Turn 356 - 1658 AD

Camulodunum comes out of resistance. Whip temple for 2 pop which leaves 2 unhappy.

Delete 4 workers in soon-to-be Gandhiland which changes us from -9 to -4gpt (5???).

Empty Galleon kills one of Isabella's caravels. She deserves it for ignoring me when I want to talk to her.

Whip the grenadier building in Haithabu (1 pop) and will evacuate next turn.

IBT: Gandhi pillages mine and bombards Haithabu.
Two Indian Frigates attack our empty galleons outside of Nidaros. We lose one galleon and kill one frigate.

7) Turn 357 - 1661 AD

Yayoi: Grenadier --> University
Camulodunum: Temple --> Library
Haithabu: Grenadier --> Gandhi's choice

I lose two galleons trying to kill the wounded frigate at decent odds. Our remaining wounded galleon hides in Nidaros.

Isabella has one galleon escorted by a frigate on the way to our southern shore. We have enough troops down there that one galleon shouldn't be any problem.

IBT: Haithabu has been captured by the Indian Empire!

Another galleon kills the wounded frigate (finally!) when it is attacked.

Isabella lands cavalry, cannon and longbowman SE of Ning-hsia.

8) Turn 358 - 1664 AD

I didn't expect Isabella to bring cavalry. We don't have very good odds so I promote the spearman and axeman to grenadiers. If she'd only waited another turn we'd have rifles...
Her two ships are already sailing back east I guess to pick up more troops.

Peace treaty is expired with Brennus.

Nothing happens except shuffle a few troops around down south.

IBT: Isabella bombards Ning-hsai and starts pillaging around it.

9) Turn 359 - 1667 AD

Rifling finishes. It looks like no one has biology yet so start it. 16 turns @ 50%

Nideros: Grocer --> Frigate
Durocortorum: Theatre --> Library
Camulodunum: Whip Library for 3 pop (4 unhappy citizens were causing starvation - after whip 0 unhappy).

Started a couple rifles in the south due to Isabella but mostly doing as The-Hawk suggested and building things to leave Gandhi instead of more troops. If Isabella keeps landing cavalry though we'll need more rifles in the old country.

I say "hi" to Mehmed and he tells me to watch out for his worst enemy Gandhi! Hannibal then tells me the exact same thing...

IBT: Isabella attacks Ning-hsai.
She attacked with her cavalry after only bombarding defenses to 24% and died. Her cannon and longbowman are still SE of city.

A Viking revolt takes place in Tacape (Hannibal)

10) Turn 360 - 1670 AD

Upsalla: Courthouse --> University
Camulodunum: Library --> Barracks

We could probably kill off the rest of Isabella's landing but it is a bit risky so left it open. She still won't talk to us. Most of the moves for this turn are still available. There are a lot of troops in Nidaros to be loaded to ferry. Depending on if we plan to stick around the old continent at all we may need to redistribute our defenses somewhat.

Good turnset Jenarie. :goodjob:

I assume Izzy is going to do the same as Ghandhi and keep going for the same city. Therefore we should reinforce Ning-hsia asap and kill off her current and subsequent forces before they can pillage too much more. Btw if Tapace surrenders to us I think we should just raze it.

I think we need to restart the war against Brennus. We probably should recall our galleons to help with the attack. Looks like Vienne should be the first target so that Bibracte can start start growing instead of starving. Speaking of starvation it looks like we need to do a bit more :whipped: in our new lands. ;) However perhaps this will impact our transfer of the Palace. :dunno: As mentioned earlier I think we should raze Cordoba and resettle 2NW on the desert. However I think we should leave Cordoba as the last city to take.

Now that Izzy has Astro we need to be aware that she may make a bid for our new cities or at the very least start pillaging our lands so we need to keep some decent forces available.

Not entirely sure about Biology. I think I would have preferred Steam Power on the path towards Assembly Line or Combustion. However Biology has its uses.

I was going to pick steam power but someone had it already. I was looking for something tradable - and to possibly use as The-Hawk suggested as a bribe.

It can be changed though I'm not really attached to the idea - I think it is only one turn in.

Nice set, Jenarie. :goodjob:

Luckily Gandhi takes the cities and does not raze them. :)

I am not sure about steam or biology. Biology has its uses and I think it will be tradeable. Although rails are also nice and would give us machine guns.

I agree that we should take care of Brennus soon. He is still backward and should be an easy target. :trouble:

So is everyone agreed that we should march/sail on to Vienne?

Haven't seen any dissent so far. Just remember to leave some defence in case Izzy comes calling.

The main annoyance in all this is Isabella, who might pop up in force in any one of half a dozen places. Rather than fortifying all over the place, I will probably just make sure we have the Ning-hsia are covered, which probably means not ferrying over any more troops at this point.

The main attack force will travel via sea to Vienne (to save time plodding over land). If Isabella decides to invade in another part of the New Country, then I think we will have enough forces to come back and reclaim things. If we spread our army across all the border cities, we’ll get nothing done, so I think that’s an acceptable risk. She is not a huge powerhouse so I doubt she will be able to muster a massive force any way. She will be more of a nuisance than a major threat.

Long term issue is still how to deal with the two top Civs. They are the only ones who can stop Gandhi now. If we can somehow neutralise them, then Gandhi will be home and dry, no matter how incompetent he is.

I think I'm back finally :D

finals really suck lol

I think things seem to be going well...we definitely don't want to take out Izzy, since Gandhi is Mehmed and Hannibal's worst enemy, Izzy is pretty much the only one that'll be willing to trade techs with him.

As for how to take out Hannibal and Mehmed...there's a couple ways to do it.

1) Get them to declare war on each other...when one starts losing, we jump in to help take him out.

2) Get Fission and Rocketry, build tons of ICBMs, then hope for the SecGen of the UN to pass No nukes policy...that means you can't build them, it doesn't mean you can't use already built ones...then we nuke them both to heck.

So do we need some radical way of getting Isabella to like us then? Like giving her free techs that she can pass on to Gandhi (once she decides she wants to talk to us).

Once Izzy loses a few more units she should be more amenable to talking. In the worst case we may have to take one of her cities. I'm hoping that won't be necessary though.

We need to be careful which techs we gift Izzy though. We don't want to give her too many mlitary techs in case she gets the wrong idea.

it won't matter if she likes us or not, all that matters is her continuing to like Gandhi... speaking of which, I've never seen Gandhi so universally disliked before...makes you think Gyathaar changed the AI relations before sending out the save, huh?

I think the point about getting her to like us is to stop her declaring war on us with monotonous regularity. We can't gift her techs if we're at war.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Gyathaar changed that. ;) It's probably to make it more even across the teams. Otherwise some teams might finish earlier than others due to the other AI trading with Ghandhi.

yes...sucks for whoever decides to kill of Izzy, since she's generally universally a pest, before finding out she's Gandhi's only friend.

Side Note: Congrats Harbourboy for finally winning Major-11...I don't think I would have been willing to play out 15 losing games for this major lol

I've partially played through 4 before abandoning them relatively early, although I have one I'll finish out eventually...right now I'm trying to find a better start for a good attempt :)

Anyone have any ideas how the other teams are going?

The only thing I can tell for sure is that we appear to be ahead of the pack right now...only CRC has given up any of their cities to Gandhi, which I find odd...to me it seems natural that in order for Gandhi to win he needs our land...his is not very good after the opening half of the game.

The culture graphs are more important than any others in reading the other teams right now...since what matters is how Gandhi is doing, not how we are doing, the only way to really tell what stage a team is at is by looking for dips in their culture...thus far only us and CRC have that...and we are about 600 years behind them in giving up cities lol

I suppose we'll see whether waiting until we had an overseas presence or just giving up our northern cities and moving south the Khan's old land was the better move.

Summary:
Two Celtic cities taken. Peace with Isabella. Gandhi goes on moronic pillaging spree but is just bright enough to take Yayoi on the way.

Details:

IBT: Gandhi bombards Old Sarai. Is this his next target? Isabella bombards Ning-Hsia and pillages hamlet.

1673: Camulodonum: Barracks => Rifleman. Ning-Hsia Grenadier kills Spanish cannon at 50% odds! Ning-hsia Grenadier kills Spanish Longbowman at 99.2%. Whipped Bank in New Karakorum. Moved troops to Bibracte ready to restart war with Brennus.

IBT: Gandhi bombards Tiflis.

1676: New Karakorum: Bank => Rifleman. Whipped Courthouse in Gergovia.

IBT: Nothing

1679: Nidaros: Frigate => Rifleman. Gergovia: Courthouse => University (this city has an Academy!) Made peace with Isabella (she’s not so bad really :mischief: ) and she gave us 140 gold but wouldn’t give us any techs. Also sold her spices for 7 gold per turn.

IBT: Nothing

1682: Iron Sheep: Grenadier => Cannon. Sanchu: Cannon => Rifleman. Gandhi bombard Old Sarai. Declare war on Brennus. War weariness goes through the roof :mad: , exacerbated by the growing pressure to adopt Emancipation.

IBT: Troops outside Vienne get bombarded (annoying!).

1685: Durnovaria: Trading Post => Theatre. Bibracte: Theatre => Library. Bombard Vienne to 0% defense.

IBT: Troops outside Vienne get bombarded again (annoying!). Stupid Gandhi pillaged one of his own new gold mines outside El Dorado Sala….. :rolleyes: A Spanish revolt takes place in Cordoba

1688: Uppsala: University => Cannon. Tiflis: Grenadier => University. Vienne taken for the loss of no units (!!). The Church of the Nativity and the Sistine Chapel survive the attack. We are now the guardians of the Christian faith (or at least it coffers). :jesus:

IBT: Gandhi pillages his own hamlet outside El Dorado Sala. :rolleyes:

1691: Nidaros: Rifleman => Jail. Kill Gandhi’s musketman with a rifleman, for his own good before he pillages everything. Spearman dies the Grenadier finishes off Celtic knight that came pillaging. Lysander (Great General) born in Iron Sheep.

IBT: Nothing

1694: New Sarai: Grenadier => Barracks. Grenadier takes out another Indian musketman before he destroys more of Gandhi’s future improvements. How are we going to stop this?

IBT: Gandhi takes Yayoi! Not sure how he managed to do that in just one turn. Unfortunately, he is now pillaging all around it. Gandhi bombards Tiflis and Old Sarai.

1697: Nidaros: Jail => Rifleman. Looked at the technology screen. Our best trading partner would be Brennus as he is the only one he is willing to trade anything with us. What a pain.

IBT: Gandhi pillages his own Town and Mine.

1700: Bagacum taken with the loss of no units (!!). Use units in Iron Sheep to take out some pillagers before abandoning city. Hopefully he will take city instead of destroying all those precious towns.

Nice turnset Harbourboy. :goodjob:

Now that we have peace with Izzy we can gift her SciMeth when the peace treaty expires. Maybe Replaceable Parts as well. :hmm: Regrettably we'll just have to watch Ghandhi being a stupid idiot. :( It'll be worse when he starts farming over some of those towns. :cry:

I've just realised that Brennus has another city (Visigoth) down the coast by Mehmed & Izzy. :( However for now I think all we can do for now is take Verlamion and raze Cordoba. The revolt there shows the folly of trying to keep it. The settler in Camulodonum can settle that desert tile by the oil.

Looks like we will have to give up Nidaros soon before Ghandhi tries to pillage it to death. :cry: Do we want to switch to Universal Suffrage before we do that?

EDIT: Maybe we should set research to 0% and increase the culture slider until we make peace with Brennus. :dunno: I'm assuming we'll leave Visigoth to Brennus for the time being.
