SGOTM 04 - Trash Team

Sure thing, I didn't realize he was only halfway.

OTOH I'm totally unable to play in the next few days (not before friday, and even then, I'm not sure). So I guess I could just as well upload the save and let you play.
Unfortunately I'm not at home right now. I'll upload the save tonight, when I'm home.

Artillery and marines are essential, IMO. Cannons and rifles have a real hard time going up against infantry.

Mr Mahk is UP.

Do we go to war against Mehmed?

My thinking is no, not yet. Let's keep things quiet, hope that Gandhi continues his slow expansion while we shrink and focus on military research.

Played 10 turns. I set research to artillery, finished that, and now we are 3 turns away from industrialism at 60% science with +380GPT.

After artillery finished, I started using our accumulated surplus to upgrade many troops. You can see our large spike in power:

You may also notice something interesting about that chart, because this happened:

Thank you Isabella! So far no cities have been taken, but as you can see Mehmed's power rating is plummeting, in fact even more drastically than Isabella's. His defences in his border cities have become very thin, and I think it is time we take advantage of that. Especially because his tech lead on us is growing ...

techtree1834.jpg

(By the way, we only have those techs on Gandhi; we are behind everyone else entirely)

Lastly (and I didn't want to say this before the main theatrics because I figured it would be overshadowed and forgotten about), a GS was born and since he would lightbulb fission, is waiting fortified in Karakorum. We need one more GP for a Golden Age.

We have "modernized" troops positioned outside Mehmed's mainland as well as a stack on the border of his city on our mainland. My one regret is that I did not build enough transports, so there are still a bunch of troops at Old Sarai (South-Westernmost city on our mainland). Good luck to the next player, here is the save.

Looking good Mr Mahk :goodjob: .

Mehmed seems to have ended any debate about war. Let's get razing.

A golden age with a large empire is more useful than a third of a tech imo.

Cam_H is UP.

Had a look at the save. Gandhi is looking good. His empire with new cities are becoming quite powerful and his military strength is growing. I reckon he will come after us again soon enough.

I've had a look at the save too.

They've been at war for three turns, so we've got a bit of time before they talk peace - if not one vassalises to the other ... which would really cause some problems.

We're not ready to take out the entire Ottoman empire, although we could probably take half of his cities.

My inclination is to take our massive navy SoD and go straight after Istanbul and work our way backwards towards America/Carthage.

The other issue I have is New Sarai - given that Gandhi's now got a very solid footing in 'Old Carthage' do we want him in 'Old Viking Lands' at all? I'm a bit inclined to take it back and let him focus 100% on the other continent. I know that's I've been 'running against the grain' in this roster about conceding our cities to India in that I'd still like the Vikings to be strong, even at the prospective cost of India's expansion.

I'll play in a few hours, but any thoughts in the interim would be greatly appreciated. :)

[Edit] Images removed. [/Edit]

We've hit Mehmed hard and taken half of his empire - he's (just now) willing to talk peace (and more). Domestically things are a bit sad and smelly.

A quick summary;

Opening: I decided to hit Istanbul first and work back down. Several of the coastal city builds got switched to Transports. Increased :science: to 80%.

Turn 1: Naval SoD moves closer to Istanbul. Dropped :science: down to 70% to pick up Industrialism on the next turn. I kindly asked for 350:gold: from Mehmed and got it! :backstab:

Turn 2: Industrialism in and :science: down to 0%.

Declare on the Ottomans, and take Istanbul - although lost six Artillery and two Infantry in the battle - sorry!

Turn 3: Diyarbakir falls. Upgrade several Cannons to Artilleries.

Turn 4: Mehmed sends a Tank towards Philadelphia! Ooops!

Turn 5: A rushed Marine knocks the stuffing out of the Tank and an Infantry finishes off the job. Bursa falls, but the Artillery numbers are falling too - sorry, again!

We pick up a Great General - unsure what to do, so he's sleeping.

Turns 6-8: Rushing units, healing troops, moving stuff around.

Turn 9: Edirne and Izmir both fall.

Turn 10: Samsun falls.

The save.

Good progress there and Mehmed is probably out of the space race with his research and production ability tanked. The best outcome we could hope for is him vassalising himself to Gandhi, but they don't get on that well so it probably won't happen.

Don't worry about losing units, they're essentially disposable now that we can rush-buy replacements immediately.

We may as well either get peace now or crank up the culture slider as WW is biting hard by the look of that map, but judging by our progress Mehmed's gassed and no longer a factor in the game so we may as well ease off and regroup. Personally I'd have razed his cities to avoid bumping our power rating up too much and having to waste units defending them, but keeping them will limit any other AI expansion. We must be getting fairly near the domination limit now though, so we definitely shouldn't acquire any more land in any future wars we have to fight.

Patagonia,

Thanks for your thoughts. :)

You're right about Mehmed II vassalising to Gandhi - I see Isabella being the most likely candidate.

On razing, we're at 43.8% landmass and require 62% for Domination - even with Bursa and Edirne coming out of revolt we'll still almost certainly be under 50%. I was obviously hoping that Gandhi would continue his :borg: of Carthage and move onto America - of which there was 'zero' movement in my turnset.

As you suggest, razing these cities would in liklihood see Spain or Celtia swoop upon the free spots in no time if the Ottomans didn't beat them to it after a peace deal.

If Gandhi fails to expand as hoped and takes land from us, I agree that our next battles should be "scorched earth". Brennus is powerful, but like Gandhi is missing Plastics (Gandhi is also missing Steam Power). Our ally in Isabella is arguably looking to be the biggest threat to Gandhi's victory at this point.

Apologies to the next player who might like to do some domestic management - I've left some bucks in the bank for any emergency fixes.

(a.) We can - but then he's at war with Gandhi, which I suspect we don't want.

(b.) ;)

Good progress guys.

I suggest we spend 4 turns researching facism at 70% and switch to police state to reduce war weariness.

That's only necessary if we're going to press on against Mehmed since the WW is down to trashing his empire.

It's probably worth trying to extort Fascism from Mehmed as part of any peace deal (he's offering to capitulate but I can't see what techs we might be able to extort without playing on). Then we can focus on mass upgrades to our navy and scout out who our next target needs to be. We can theoretically raze 4 Spanish cities or 7 Celtic ones on the turn we declare.

Who's up next?

What ineffectual captaincy. Mutiny is always welcome ;) .

Looking through the last few pages its gone

So Patagonia is UP :goodjob: .

pigswill is on deck  .

Then carry on with roster as above.

Looked at the save. We could cetainly up the culture slider and make less money per turn. Let's finish off Mehmed, razing as we go. He'll probably capitulate to Isabella given half a chance but that's ok.

Bit of a shame that Gandhi didn't try expanding, maybe he's afraid of us, maybe something else.

We could always try clearing the continent which would pretty much guarantee Gandhi a win. It wouldn't be fast but it would be succesful.
