SGOTM 05 - Mac Team

There are no units in the fog between Saladin's city and our own.

Clever idea about gifting the beleaguered city to Cyrus! That wouldn't have occurred to me.

As for promotions, I would hold off. Unless you plan to removed the chariot with them... maybe not a bad idea. :hmm:

We will likely lose one, but that still leaves a second archer to perform guard duty. I would check the odds first - if they're over 85%, I'd save the promotion. Under 85%, and I give combat1.

Hmm, let's see. Turfan autorazed, so that was a loss. (Edit because of xpost with peter: unless gifted, but I wouldn't have thought of that either!)

Both cities can whip their libraries. That would get them back to building units faster. The forest being chopped could go to a galley.

Personally, I would give the Drill I archer Drill II and the other combat, but I don't know if that's best. Then attack first with Drill archer, followed by combat archer, if necessary.

I would work the gold mine instead of the stone. I would farm the riverside tile next to Beshbalik next, so that we could work both stone and gold. Then get him up to Karakorum to fix the horses/pigs.

I would do math next, which takes us toward calendar, which we need for the bananas and (sooner, hopefully, rather than later) the dye. It also moves us toward construction.

The scout should make his way to Beshbalik, if possible, as a defender of last resort in case there's a second landing.

Good luck, dojo!

ok i'm thinking finish archers/chariots and maybe 2-3 more in each cityand take Saladin's city and... should we keep it or put a new one where we want it.

start on galleys for border patrol

what about war with izzy and/or qin?

anything eles to pay atteention to?

let me know i'll play tomarrow after work.

I'd say raze the city. The War  from "we long to joing the motherland" will be intense. It really sucks that we're having to invest 200 :hammers: in settlers, plus 2x the usual worker turns to get access to copper

I'm not convinced that border patrol galleys are worth the hammer investment. Galley vs. Galley is less than 50% success rate.... we have better odds (and fewer hammers) hitting Saladin's forces once they land. :groucho:

As for war with Isabella or Qin, I have no opinion... it seems to me like we have our hands full with just Saladin. Would either of these characters send ships to us? If so, I think we should stay at peace for a while still. But I could easily be persuaded with a factual argument :mischief:

Remember, Saladin has copper, so it won't be long before he's landing axes and chariots, not archers and chariots. I think we have to build some galleys to try to bottle up/destroy his galleys. I don't see how we'll be able to fend of axes if they land in force. (And for all we know, he's teching his way to HBR!) If we're lucky with geography, we might even be able to trap his galleys inside his coastal city. (Not that we've been lucky yet this game.)

dojoboy, there used to be a barb axeman down near Beshbalik. What happened to him?

I think we ought to keep Najran, assuming we live long enough to capture it. It's in a good location, and we need all the :hammers: and pop we can get.

a_man, we can't build chariots now, only archers. I agree with Peter that we have enough on our hands right now. Worker should finish farm, fix up stone, and then start building roads to help with troop movement.

Of course we should make peace with Saladin, if at all (reasonably) possible.

I don't know where the barb axeman went. When Saladin landed the second time, the coward was moving north from Beshbalik.

ok i think ive got it
try for peace hook up stone and roads
and that may be all i get in maybe an archer or 2

http://gotm.civfanatics.net/submit/civ4sgotm_submission_list.php save?
No luck with peace with anyone
Salidin set up a new city over by the copper, with one archer defending it + we have our 2 new archers heading in on his borders(currently fortified) started another archer in both citys and the worker is 3 turns from the quarry

We really need to hook up the horses.

Play order:

dr_s - warming up
peter grimes
dojoboy
a_man - just finished
willpax - up :whipped:
Welnic - on deck

I agree about the horses, that should be next.

What happened to the chariot next to Karakorum? Did we (or the barbs) manage to kill it, or did it wander off?

What should we do about Kufah? It's in a crappy location (no food), but I don't really think we can afford to raze it. That means we should wait until it grows to size 2 before taking it.

Karakorum has no whip unhappiness but is about to grow into unhappiness. I think we should insert a galley into the queue right now and whip it.

I would move the fortified archer 1S or 1SW into the woods/jungle for better defense.

Can we trade our cities for the barb cities on the big island? ;)

Got the save and looked over it some.

We need to either whip or cap growth in Karakorum, but a single galley only helps us a little right now. We are also short on workers, need to get the horses going ASAP, and need to claim some metal almost as quickly. If we don't want to raze Turfah and build anew in a better spot for the copper, then we might think about building a settler for the iron in the southeast, or a worker to get going on the horses (after one turn of work, or whenever the whip would be most optimal). Our defense becomes much easier with axemen, however counterintuitive it may be to work on expansion in this dire time.

Razing Turfah might get Saladin to consider peace, although we need to have a settler not too many turns away or we lose the site again.

I will move the archers into better defensive positions and prioritize the horses with our single worker. Should I follow the earlier suggestion of whipping a galley (speeding our archer somewhat), or shift into a worker to speed infrastructure construction, and/or a settler while we are waiting for our horses to get hooked up?

I will wait for some feedback before playing my turns.

I will move the archers into better defensive positions and prioritize the horses with our single worker.

Be careful moving the worker, if there is a chance Saladin lurks in the fog.

I didn't think of whipping a worker or settler. Worker is probably more critical right now to hook up the horses and pigs. Then build some more archers/chariots for defense, then a settler? Or do we have enough defense to start right on a settler after the worker?

As per suggestions, I whipped a worker, applied some turns to a settler, then switched to a chariot once horses were pastured. The worker then started on the pigs.

I also started Beshabalik on a galley (we'll probably want two) and started to move the completed archer closer to Turfan.

No developments on the war and diplomatic fronts: Saladin wants Beshbalik for peace, which I will not give. Still a single archer protecting Turfan, but I don't know how long that will be the case.
