SGOTM 05 - Misfits

aye if we keep vassalage, we atleast still get a double upgrade straight up, just wont get level 3 as easy, but hey, all good :)

Sorry guys, but at the moment I don't have the time to play the game. If you want to wait, then we are looking at about 36 hours from now.

I agree with cnwjr on all of those points.

I finally got my internet connection working again. On to the turnset.

1730: Misc pillage. Peace w/Qin. Got 220 gold & Education. Gifted Izzy horses, iron, dyes & silk. Changed dye trade with Asoka for 8 to stone for 14 & gems. Canceled Silk incoming trade. Revolted to Mercantilism.

1730-1736: Pillaged stuff outside out borders.

1732: Made most of the 'free' specialists into scientists. Took Chemistry down to 18 turns.

1732-1744: Built units & population.

1746: Barb bleed gives us Divine Right. We get GS in Old Sarai. Use it to make academy there.

1754: DoW on Qin. Move troops to Chendu & other city. Ooops... accidentally pillage furs. We should keep city anyway when taken and workers are available to rebuild camp.

1760: Chendu razed. Troops in position to take small city with furs. Others in position to pillage Qin's resources.

Christian Missionary landed near Nanjing. Should go to Beijing. Beijing about to finish Taoist Missionary for ship to take back to our mainland. We will not be able to spread Taoism until we change religions civics, though.

Spain is still alive, but Madrid was just destroyed. I think the war is about to end as Izzy just converted to Buddism. If so, time to cancel the gifts.

We are two turns from chemistry. We will run out of funds in a few more turns, so will have to cut back on research again. I had at 60% the whole turnset.

Asoka already has a number of frigates wandering around. Probably not a great idea to DoW him anytime soon. If we go after anyone soon (after Qin), it should be Cyrus or Alex.

Watch the micromanagement. When a city grows, the city manager tends to do silly things with the free specialist. Only a few of our cities are in happiness trouble or close to it.

you wanna finish your turn marow? i'm patient this turn :) let us know :)

cnwjr: nice work as always, good peace trade, lets hope Qin is researching something tasty for us now.

For our next tech research, we seem to have two main choices.

1) Steel for cannons
2) Printing Press for commerce

The latter would give us more research/gold to aid in getting techs faster and slowly leads to rifling. The former is best if we are going to war in the next 100 years.

My vote would be Printing Press. The added benefit of commerce adds up quickly and will be quite needed as we hit the more expensive techs.

I'll vote with you, cnwjr.... You seem to have pretty good logic there.

How we're ever going to get Asoka is a mystery, though.

I think we can get Asoka only if we can bring a strong attack against him. The only effective way I can think of doing that is to build a very strong SoD that can take a city in a single turn. It needs enough catapults/canons/artillery (I wish) to reduce city defenses to zero and leave enough to whittle the defenders with collateral damage (bombers anyone :) ) for the remaining troops to take the city. There also has to be enough defenders to hold against counterstrike. Also, unless we choose to raze everything (not the best idea), we need to take several cities in a short period of time to prevent revolts.

Another option is to build lots of horse units and send them in to pillage down all of his towns to drastically cut his research abilities as well as any strategic resources we can effectively take down. No point in killing off horses if he has 3 of them and we can only reach one. They would need to be 3-4 units to a stack. One horse, to move & pillage. One anti-horse (pike?). One strong melee type defender. A counterstrike cat type might be useful for adjacent defenders. A variant I haven't tried as often is to send just the horses to pillage. The main advantage to this pillage option is we can pretty much get it started long before a powerful SoD can be created.

ok guys i'm sorry about this, my browser didnt reload properly when i uploaded, however the filr did upload i can't post the turn log. And i didnt keep one myself = / but here is what i can tell you.

China have one lone city left (3 destroyed, 1 (fur city) kept), he wont trade anything for peace.

Traded dyes to cyrus for a measley 2 gold per turn

We have open borders with Cyrus (trade worth it?)

India cancel 14g per turn for gems. gee i forgot to retrade it sorry = /

We have a mighty military, overkill number of units near china's last city, 6 around mainland (3 on boat needing direction).

Grenadiers and catapults on build to support knights.

2 turns to printing press.

seemed sucessful. With our unit production and our lack of economy, we need to choose next target ASAP. India it is?

I won't be able to look at the save until later.

If we want to go after India, we will have to land all of our troops first. Since Cyrus was nice enough to give us open borders, land there near India's capital.

Remember we want to check for special stuff before razing cities. In India, he has a number of wonders and at least one holy city.

We are probably best off if we send lots of troops to pillage.

If we do DoW Asoka soon, remember to squash his city on OUR island. :)

We have chemistry, so we should be able to build frigates of our own for protection and attack.

Next tech? Replaceable Parts on the way to Rifling (riflemen)? Or Steel (canons)? Or Nationalism on the way to Military Tradition (cavalry)? This last also is on the ultimate path to Constitution and Democracy, which will be needed when the computer civs finally get there to combat Emancipation.

Should we take the fastest? The most powerful? I think cavalry, canons, and riflemen are all quite useful, though cavalry has the edge due to speed in my mind.

Okay... I've looked at the save. Guess what comes next? :mischief:

If you guessed comments, give the man a cigar! :smoke:

As expected, we are about to finish off Qin. A few more turns at most it seems. This is very good as it will regain us a lot of happiness. :)

As I expected, but not this soon, we are suffering from Emancipation envy. I feel that we are thus required to research Nationalism next.

If we go into a rebuild period, we should shift to Representation instead of Police State. This will double our 'free' scientist research. We should probably do this until we have Nationalism, Constitution, and Democracy. In the meantime, build units, move them to Persia near Asoka, and prepare to begin a massive pillage against Asoka. It might be better, however, to take Qin's last city and stage our units there to keep the away cost down.

Izzy is down to one city and the war is over, so we should probably cancel our gifts to her. Of course, nits make lice, so it might be a good idea if we take her out ourself and keep the city.

We can sell sheep to Asoka for 17/turn.

I notice we got a gift of a gem mine. :D

Do we want to build the Forbidden Palace? Beijing can complete it in around 17-18 turns from start to finish.

More later? Probably. Let's hear some discussion. Dissent. Something.

I think I'm up... I'll DL the save later tonight. Just got done a 13 hour day.

Edit:

Shangdong has 2 fish... death? Dacca can also die with the city on our continent.

Asoka will give 17 for fur, too.

So... want me to plan a sneak attack on India? I can do that!

My concern is west of our mainland. I don't want to find 8 frigates... I need to make a few.

Just looked at the save. Since we have emancipation unhappiness, that is obviously bad, but killing off China will free 5 unhappy faces in our capital. How close is Asoka to rifles?

Democracy is obviously needed soon, since we don't need to whip anymore and emancipation is close. I agree with cnwjr on preparing for Asoka(since he is our biggest threat at the moment) while researching democracy(what about steel?)

It is usually better for us to trade away health items to potential opponents than happiness or strategic items. It does less for them.

I'm more worried about galleons than frigates. If we preposition our troops to attack, the frigates won't do a whole lot to us. If Asoka brings troops to our homeland, we have little defense of our own.

We won't be able to see if Asoka has Replaceable Parts on the way to Rifling until we finish Printing Press in a couple of turns. He is so far advanced in research that he might have already. That's one reason I suggested the multi unit pillage I had before.

We also can't see if anyone has Military Tradition yet as we have to get Nationalism first.

My suggestion for this turnset is to build for pillage or attack (whichever we decide) and get as many troops close as possible. A few frigates for protection of our transports is good. Concentrate heavily on research and growth to try to catch up.
We have to finish Qin, of course. If someone feels we simple have to fight, go right ahead. :)

No one has Steel yet. It is a possible line of research which might be a good choice if we decide we simply have to attack Asoka in strength. Of course, it will take time to research, then to build canons, so we still need the buildup and pillage strategy in the interim.

Noted, cnwjr... Good info.

I'm more of a builder, but I can prepare for the war. I suggest we attack (either pillage or go after cities) right in the middle of his land near the capital. We can draw troops from the Qin campaign, and augment them with pikemen. Didn't you mention a couple pikes and a knight would be the best pillage patrol? (Maybe add a grennie to the mix)

I think that Toku might jump in on Asoka... India seems like this loooong country, and if we can split it in half, it sure couldn't hurt. If Asoka continues with his techs, we'll never get him. I'm already worried he has cav... I suppose we can hope he's low on units.

Looks like Izzy is stuck out on an island.

You said to look at the cities before razing them. I know how to check for holy cities, but is there somewhere you can see the wonders?

Raze the last Qin city or keep it?
