ok i emailed it in to em instead of uploading again, i've got a copy of the submission success page saved anyhow. I guess we just have to wait to find out if we get the spoon or not?

Did we win?! Post a screenshot!

Piko, you will have to explicitly give us the final details. The final save is NOT available and won't be until every team has finished.

I also want to know for a fact that we are done so I can look at the other team's results.

Can he post the final save in here?

Woo hoo! Thanks Alan!

Congratulations on your victory! I think you're pretty safe from the spoon - one of the teams who actually lost should be getting it. Instead you deserve the Spectators' Special Award (ahem, if there was one). You made a very focused effort both for the deadline and the one victory condition that was still realistically available - and succeeded. All in all, you've hung in there. I hope to see you again in a future SGOTM.

Well done, Guys :goodjob:

We win?

:woohoo: :band: [party]

Good job guys:goodjob:

Now, time to go to the other threads and find out what we did right and wrong. However, this is my list right now:

Right:
  • Go warmongering
  • Managing to win at all
Wrong:
  • Attempt to go after Qin with Sal still alive
  • Let Asoka run away with the game in the industrial era

maro: rather spot on there, i always regretted not just hitting sal first, being hit by him first really put us on the back foot, we werent the only ones with this problem, but we should have lined saladin up immediately. We also didnt focus enough on strengthening our economy, it was weak all game.

Well done guys. An exciting finish. So did you have to attack Asoka or not? I thought he was over 6000 points?

Was tech worth twice as much as expected since your score was combined with the barbs and you shared techs?

:goodjob:

Congrats on stylish finish and respect for not giving up to the end!

Congratulations to the win!

Wrong:
  • Attempt to go after Qin with Sal still alive
  • Let Asoka run away with the game in the industrial era

I am of the opinion that the best strategy was to go for Qin before Sal, although this opinion is disputed. Sending an early pillage tripplet (axe, spear, chariot) would have been enough to keep Saladin at bay until at least 500 AD, at which time Qin would be defeated. We (Murky Waters) did not fully manage this strategy, and decided to send a larger stack to kill Sal earlier than what was actually necessary.

jimmy: yer tech points got us there, even before population boom (had 10 cities grow on second last turn hehe). and yes, barbs got tech points also, so that gave us the boost as our scores are merged.

I made a (very) quick survey of the other teams last night. So far, I see one team that has lost, a few that are still playing, and the rest are conquest/domination wins.

We did way too much infrastructure building and not enough combat in the very early game. We were badly hurt by Sal early at a time when we could have taken him out. I'm going to go back and do a very thorough analysis of the top three teams to see where we can improve. Mostly, it looks like whip!, whip!, whip! and kill, kill, kill. :) I can live with that. A big difference was how the barbs did things. Some teams actually had the barbs take out cities in the early game. At least one revealed the short way via Greece to the mainland. Our barbs were good for research help and not really much else. It might be because we made peace too early with some folks. It might be other things. That's some of what I plan on looking at.

In any case, it was fun and I'm glad we scraped out a win at the very end, even though it was a near thing.

For those who might be interested, I did a test to see the results of the attack on Calcutta.

I landed a gunship, armor and infantry in each of the three blocking tiles. I put a gunship, both sams, a few arty, and a couple of infantry in the next tile. The rest in the final tile. Asoka was able to destroy two of the blocking stacks and wound the three in the third. He managed to reinforce Calcutta with a modern armor and an arty. The modern armor was slightly wounded in an attack that killed an infantry. He also send a ton of aircraft at every stack (including the empty transports). Those aircraft that couldn't reach enemy troops instead carried out an intensive attack on farms, mines, towns, etc. He had a couple of battleships that attacked and killed a couple of transports, then the battleships retreated into Calcutta. In his first turn, he also took Tianjin. I hadn't bothered to upgrade the units there.

On our attack turn, we used 4 wounded arty to bombard Cal's defenses to 0. Then, about another 10 arty died taking out the modern armor. The remainder of the defenders went down to an arty each as they had been wounded by the previous 10 attacks. We razed Calcutta. Net point gain 55 points. 20 (Calcutta) - 9 (Tianjin) = 11 pop lost. Obviously, for future reference, revolting pop still counts.

His second attack turn (which would have been his final one had it actually been necessary to play) was involved in attacking the remains of our stack (22 units survived) and again carpet bombing the infrastructure.

Edit: Interesting. I did a 2nd test, upgrading the units in Tianjin first. It wasn't attacked at all. I also landed all of the units in a single tile (#5). The bombardment continued, but only a couple of units actually attacked the stack. Only one additional defender in Calcutta (Modern Armor). It was quite easy to take out. I captured it instead of razing it. It held quite easily to the very minor counterattack. I guess there is some critical level of units that the AI refuses to attack. SoD, anyone?
