SGOTM 05 - Murky Waters

Sure, we all made some mistakes (yes, you too LC ;) )

But I think that these were mainly in the execution of our strategy. I guess we lost maybe 20-30 turns from a lot of smallish things. As I have been saying over and over again ( ) a small delay in the early stages will turn into a larger delay later. This is especially true for conquests, the sooner one can break the "exponential" growth of the AIs the easier the endgame becomes.

Considering that we are a team of eight people I would say that we did much better than can be expected. Mistakes are inevitable as it is very difficult to execute a long-term strategy without sidesteps when you get to play 1/8th of the game...

You're one to talk.

First, you don't even appear for the first 35 pages of our thread, then after the game is over you vanish again, only to re-surface after about 379 trash-talking posts with a DEADLY SERIOUS POST.

Frankly, I can't think of any other mistakes you made... ;)

The MW pessimism continues....

LC's post had me worried:
Before you let Big Pig introvert you any more, don't forget that none of these teams have read our thread yet, therefore, they don't know that you, Erkon, took over for Big Pig as Captain. Just the opposite, in fact--they're assuming BP's still Captain... Therein, obviously, lie their doubts.
Could all the other team's doubts about MW finishing early in a silver laurel position really be because they thought BP was still at the helm? (despite 2 consecutive silver laurels already to his name....)

Fortunately a quick trawl through the SGOTM4 thread, revealed that the knowledge the Erkon was captain was fully in the public domain:
After days of deafening silence, Erkon has bravely stepped forward to put his name forward as team captain. Hurrah - all hail Captain Erkon :king:
Hail, Captain Erkon!!!

And if there was any doubt that some teams may have been so insular as to not have trawled through all 2000+ posts in the MW thread to read this information, there was this in the SGOTM5 pre-game discussion thread (check out the sig)

No doubt about it - everyone is well aware who the new temporaryMW captain is

No point in taking shots at each other now. It won't change the outcome of this game.
I thought if we got LC's turns declared null and void, they would not be included in the total number of turns we took to win (after all, most of his turnsets were steps backwards anyway), and so we would win the gold ;)

I'm sure that there's lots we can all do the improve our game play. No point in taking shots at each other now. It won't change the outcome of this game.
Man, and I thought klarius was the serious one around here...sheeesh. :nuke:

Okay, let's try a different approach, since evidently our new goal is to change the outcome of the game. :p

I noticed that CFR is down to only 3 players. Surely that's against the rules. Might as well just call it CFB... :joke: :joke: :joke: :joke: :joke:

Oh yeah, and Balbes, before you get out your knife, you're too late:
LtC, All your internal organ are belong to us.

@ LC: Perhaps you had better get started deleting ~99% of the posts in this thread too ;)

The majority must fall into at least two of the prohibited 'spam' categories of the forum rules.

Does this post have a point?

On the other hand, one is usually blind to his own misconceptions, so only with the help of others can one improve.

I kindly ask all of you to point out my mistakes. You don't need to be too polite when doing so.

So true. Oh, that scout move! Sigh!

;)

this i loved:
Hmm, with all the cross posting I'm seeing in the main forum there are a bunch of teams finished one way or the other. I'll continue to monitor this, but at least 4 teams are done so far maybe 6. We either really suck or otherwise we'll be one of the few teams to actually win (hopefully).

the mystery for the other teams continues! it's cool that they're keeping optimistic tho, since the point is fun. for the other teams. i know your goal is trash talking and max posts in thread.

I am serious, we were extremely short of cathedrals, in fact we didn't even research Music.

I am fanatically against GPpool pollution. So a shrine or a prophet are out of the question. Only GA (I had a very interesting chat with WastinTime on this subject on the HOF forum).

amen on pollution! i laughed so hard when the Trash Team got a nice natural spread of religions in various cities and somebody made the comment "we have enough religions on our hands!" wouldn't that be something, the barb team winning by culture. the next time i'm in a weird mood i just might try that. not on deity, i'm not nearly as crazy experienced as you are.

Actually I think I'd prefer to remain unpasteurised. I'm quite fond of many of my bacteria (and many talk at least as much sense as LC....)

If this game did indeed defeat quality teams like CRC and MW, any victory is impressive :) We may earn laurels just for the victory.
Altho' Civicide clearly realises Erkon is captain as he beleives we have lost, he at least realises that there are still some quality players in MW. I can only assume he is referring to the ex-captain....

Hey now, I never really believed that you guys had lost, I just didn't see how a victory that early was possible. Mostly because we were roughly halfway to researching Agriculture by the time you guys were wiping off the last of your enemies. I said as much in a previous post, but my team believed you guys had lost, and I didn't want to bring them down with pessimism since we were close to our first victory in 3 tries :). Your subtle pessimistic hints in the Maint forum confirmed for me that you guys had won. I'm a poker player. The guy who shrugs and says, "ah, hell, I raise" always has pocket aces.

Congrats on a very impressive win. Not that I'm going to dig through your 2000+ posts trying to figure out exactly how you did it (because some of us, you know, have lives and jobs and stuff, a clear disadvantage).

You've gotta admit our power graph was kind of sexy, though.

Subtle hint!??

BP, LC and Erkon wouldn't recognize a subtle hint if it painted itself pink and danced naked on the roof singing "Subtle hints are here again".

(Mel: Happy days are here again)

PINK and naked?

"Oh no, not again, Big Pig!!!!"

 ;)

I found a new avatar for BP.
