SGOTM 06 - Trash Team

Good stuff Pigswill!

I agree that jumbos really rock. They eat up knight and can even deal with Maces if they have shock promotion. Too bad they are not great city takers, but hey cant have it all.

Good stuff - this is a 'got it' but won't be playing it for a day and a half due to the burdensome pressures of RL getting in the way of Civ. I'm looking forward to Pigswill's report, but as always, pleased to hear opinion on strategy ... or else I'll go off on my own tangent !

Well, advice will have to wait for the report.

May I suggest going into "total catapult" mode?
w're still far away from maces, and we certainly won't be able to build enough elephants to counter our super teching friends' maces.

option B is to go into total scientist mode, but I don't think we can catch up on those guys.

Consider this a big vote for option A.

London/York/Nottingham/Athens can all pump out cats at barrage 2/3, and since longbows will always be top defenders against cats at the start of a siege, we can deal some nasty collateral damage to any maces/xbows/pikes before sending in the infantry.

I approach the set with a degree of trepidation

1322. Research 30%: MC in 8 turns at -8gpt.
Mansa is sneaking some HAs towards Notts, Ele moves out to protect stone quarry.

1328.
Hadrumetum CH>cat.
Athens LB>Ele.
Mansa's stack at Notts consists of LB, 2HA, Cat.
Athens LB attacks greek LB covering sheep and wins! Recall spear sw of Athens into BFC coz it doesn't seem to be doing anything much and adds to our unit maintenace.

1334.
York Cat>Granary
Battle of the Stone Quarry. Lose ele, kill LB, Cat, HA. Quarry pillaged.

1340.
Notre Dame BIDL (slightly irrelevant).

1346.
London Cat>Cat.
We declare on Ragnar the apparently vertically challenged viking king.

1352.
Attack Leptis to try and get rid of Hanny's iron. The iron mine is protected by a mace. Kill LB, Pike. Raze Leptis for 19g. Mace still protecting mine outside of Carthage's borders.

Notice that Hannibal has a city up north:
tw3d0000.jpg

More horses....

1358 zzz

1364.
Spear kills HA at Corinth.
Ele kills cat at Notts.
Get a Great General in Athens. Ponder. Decide to settle him as MI in Argos.

1370.
Hanny mace kills spear at Corinth.
Discover MC. Start machinery.
Hanny has re-settled on the ruins of Leptis. I guess he must really want that iron.

1376.
Athens Ele>CH
York Granary>Cat

(to be continued after supper)

(one delicious home-made fish curry later...)

An army has been sneakingtowards Hippo and finally arrives:
tw3a0000.jpg

Lose CR3 sword, lose C3 Axe, kill Knight, Pike and Sword. Just a cat to go.

Meanwhile ele kills one of Mansa's HAs near Notts. But there's another HA, a cat and a treb lurking with menace.

1382.
Hippo gets another LB to defend it but for the loss of another cat the LB and cat are killed and Hippo is razed. Our coffers gain 170g.
Meanwhile up north things ain't quite so good. We lose 2 cats and a LB near Notts, kill the cat and the treb and hurt Mansa's HA.

1388.
Ele kills a mace at Corinth.

1394.
Argos CH>axe.
Pillage the Leptis iron.

1400.
Surprise attack at Notts. We lose LB and archer at Notts, Kill NC and Knight. Hanny has a wounded NC but Notts is defended by a beaten up ele and a beaten up cat so I didn't risk it, which means that the NC will probably pillage the horses at Notts IBT. I've got a LB and ele heading towards Notts from York. Might need a couple of LBs in the not distant future.

We've had several tiles pillaged, mainly around Corinth which we weren't working. Notts has lost itsstone and rice, rice at York is up andrunning and Argos has got itself an iron mine.

Everything else just seems incidental!

But from the start ...

1400AD: A War Elephant around Nottingham defeats a Carthaginian Numidian Cavalry. Otherwise, start compiling a SoD near Corinth.

1406AD: York – Catapult > Catapult

1412AD: Mycenae – Courthouse > Granary. The SoD approaches the Carthaginian city of Thapus … it’s quality if not quantity … promoted Knight and Crossbow.

churchill_1400_thapsus_pre.JPG

Greece shuffles a ‘2x Longbow + Settler’ trio down near our Iron near Argos. We shuffle a second defender should the Greek Longbows decide to take on our Spearman.

1418AD: London – Axeman > Forge. Argos – Axeman > Forge. We tackle Thapus, and win without loss!

churchill_1400_thapsus_win.JPG

And burn it! Mali brings forth a Horse Archer up north – what will become a relentless theme for the remainder of the turnset.

1424AD: Hit a Carthaginian ‘2x Longbow + Settler’ party, but in our victory we nonetheless lose a War Elephant at 86%; at least we have another Worker. Greece continues to shuffle around the Settler party without attacking the units on our Iron tile.

1430AD: Unfortunately i.b.t with our ‘anti-Horse Archer’ units elsewhere, Mali’s Horse Archer knocks one of Corinth’s Towns back down to a Village. The pillager soon falls however to a redirected English War Elephant that was rushed to the scene. Nottingham – War Elephant > War Elephant. Two Carthaginian Catapults also fall near Nottingham to the English defence.

1436AD: York – Catapult > Catapult. Carthage moves a CGII Longbow towards Illinois past Nottingham.

1442AD: Our SoD that razed Thapus mends thanks to our Great General Medic and arrives at the fringes of the City of Carthage. Pikeman, Maceman, three CGII Longbows, with another nearby.

1448AD: The troops near Nottingham pick off the Carthaginian Longbow. A smaller second SoD that was developed near Corinth has made its way towards Carthage. The English Catapults begin their assault on the city defences.

1454AD: Athens – Courthouse > War Elephant. More Malinese Horse Archers make their way through the eastern forests and approach Nottingham. Another Carthaginian Longbow falls like its predecessor in the same area, but one remains.

1460AD: The Nottingham roaming defence stack of a catapult and two war Elephants is to be split.

churchill_1400_nottingham_hassles.JPG

The Catapult ‘just’ defeats the last of the Carthaginian Longbows, while one of the War Elephants takes out a Malinese Horse Archer. A Malinese duo of Horse Archer and Trebuchet reach Nottingham – defended by a single yet highly promoted Longbow.

Tell us something we don't know ...

churchill_1400_tech.JPG

1466AD: The City of Carthage’s defence is down to 0% (frustratingly only temporarily, it soon bounces up to 5%), and the second SoD has pillaged its Copper. Meanwhile to the north, Nottingham’s defences are eroded by the Trebuchet i.b.t.. One of the War Elephants however swoops on the Horse Archer, and our defending Longbow comfortably takes out the Treb’.

1472AD: London – Forge > War Elephant. In the distance, more Malinese Horse Archers are spotted including a ‘Horse Archer + Catapult’ duo.

1478AD: The troops are readied … we attack the City of Carthage.

churchill_1400_pre_carthage.JPG

From the smaller stack a 5XP Catapult gets promoted with Barrage II – it falls. A City Raider Cat’ goes in – it too falls. Yet another City Raider Cat’ – it withdraws! From then on in, all units win their battles.

churchill_1400_post_carthage.JPG

On the same turn, Corinth finds itself with notable unhappiness.

1484AD: Another Malinese Horse Archer falls to the power of the English War Elephant, but otherwise the turn has been largely left for tweaking. Our invasion units are (generally) healing in Carthage.

Good stuff :goodjob: . That should leave Hanny with the barb city in the north, hopefully no metals (unless he can trade or beg some) so no knights or pikes. Hopefully he's now same status as Alex: annoying, not a major threat but capable of recovery if left alone indefinitely.

Guess that leaves MM as the last major threat on our continent (though we can probably anticipate cyrus and raggy getting astronomy for seaborne SoDs).

Edit: Might be worth swopping some ele builds for shock axes coz eles are vulnerable to pikes even if they eat HAs and NCs for breakfast and so make good pillage protectors. As usual more cats are needed.

Nice job. Hopefully our economy starts picking up soonish. Muskets would be preferred when Cyrus' stacks show up.

Great work on taking carthage! :goodjob:

Guess MM is next when the stack is upto full strength...

got it!

Any advice before I crack on?

Started playing, captured Djenne (spice and dye town)

This more or less killed what was left of our economy. Thank god for representation and caste system. After assigning merchant things are not so gloom anymore. Apart from MM having musketmen... :(

Anyway, we got a Great Engineer in Athens. We can use it to bulb engineering. We currently have 522 out of 2145 of engineering, 25 turns left. Seems like a good plan to use him for that.

Another plan is switch to bureaucracy to help our economy a bit more.

We can crack on and capture MM's remaining (5-6) large cities.... Should be possible.

Let me know, I'll play more tomorrow.

Remco,

Good work on Djenne and pleased that you're confident on the rest of Mali.

I'm not that excited about lightbulbing Great Engineers (although certainly have done a Machinery slingshot a few times before), but being so far behind on tech' and not looking at any super WoWs in the near future, I can see some case for it. I'd still be inclined to settle him, but am happy to go with the majority.

I guess we must have machinery if a GE can bulb engineering. I'd say the bulb is worth it, it means any gold we acquire can be used to upgrade swords to maces. Maces and trebs is a definite improvement on swords and cats.

I affected the engineer in athens to make sure we get the great engineer to lightbulb engineering. I guess I should have said so :mischief:.
Anyway, my vote is for lighbulbing everything except prophets.

Go for the bulb. It'll open up chemistry in the distant future. I have a feeling we'll be desperate for grenadiers at some point.

Muskets aren't that much tougher than longbows on city defence, so meh to Mansa. Stomping him shouldn't be too difficult, especially with maces and trebs. Real units, hooray!

Also the extra movement point on roads will help get our new units to the front more quickly, to keep the war machine rolling, so here's another vote for the bulb.

Pikes are a bit nicer against mounted units than spears too, and are the same strength against them as War Elephants although the costs are the same so the WE's are a better all round build, so scracth anything I said about pikes!!!

Engineering Bulbed, Timbuktu burned to the ground (economy cannot support it and no wonders).

MM has 3 big cities left. It's almost time for mop up mode. Alex first to see if we can reach more land and build fish nets near athens.

Report to follow later.
