SGOTM 07 - Fifth Element

Culdeus, you can go ahead and play.

Team: There is some kind of technical issue with my save, maybe resulting from me playing turnsets from two different machines. Until and if we can figure out what happened, I will have to recuse myself from playing in this game. I will still participate in the thread and discussion. Many thanks to AlanH for his support.

The problem is not fully resolved, as I need some feedback on the status of Merum's PC, which is on a different continent from Merum at the moment!

Meanwhile, please continue from his uploaded save. I've asked Merum not to play another turn set until we can sort out the issue, to avoid any further complications.

Wow, two more days and once again lots to catch up on. Looks like we've made some good progress though.

It seems a PA makes all techs 50% more expensive
link

This was an excellent catch, dutch! It explains a lot. If I can fend off real life for a while maybe I can play another test game or two of my own again now...

I am still stuck without my computer until probably next Monday - it is in Sydney and I am in Newcastle waiting for a few items in the mail as I lost my wallet on the weekend. Hopefully the bureaucracy won't take too long. (Who could ever believe that it gives +50%:hammers:?!) Anyway, I can't play until then, but hopefully I'll get another TS in.

It also means I can't check the save :(, but all that has been said sounds good for increasing global tech pace. Have we settled on Liz as PA? It seems like everyone is for it. If so, have we decided not to give her Washington?

notes

Spoiler :

Turn 0

Noted we are trading stone for 3gpt with asoka. Marble not traded and no food available for trade. Will put the big fan on the marble first.

In other news Max Ramirez just raked the Astros for a 2Run HR.

Turn 1

Trading

Sci Method to HC for 60 G and WM
Corp to MM for 50G and WM
PP to Izzy for 40G

Everyone else was totally 0 Gold or else was on a no trade list which included Louis Alex KK and Fred.

Turn 2

Catherine demanded Elec. Let her have it now she's just cautious from annoyed. May not have been best decision ever, but would rather not be counterfeited late because of a stupid -1 tech demand.

Now building research.

Turn 3
Hatch asks us to go to war with Catherine. Declined.
NYNY is now down to size 4 and is pinched on all sides. Has access to only two tiles now.
Worker moves to marble to windmill it.
Washington is massing lots of troops on our border. Oh crap. I think he might try to breakout. I went ahead and traded for rep parts and chem for upgrades because it's a #$!#$% load of rifles.

Turn 4

Nothing from Washington. We popped a GA? Whaaaa? I guess from NE pollution. I'm gonna let this puppy rot for a bit. Inclination is to bomb him. The 1500 for mass media won't help us will it? You know what, screw it I'm bombing this guy. No reason to eat a -1GPT from this point.

Bombing the GA gives us the cow and knocks NYNY down to one ocean tile. Not only that it gave us one town from Washington. I move in to pillage it.

Turn 5
Corp to JC for 110G
MT to Fred for 160G
Nothing from Wash

Turn 6
The washington town reverts before we can raze it as does the cow. NYNY at size 3.

Turn 7
Windmill Finished on marble. City growing again
Going to move worker to stone and wait input on next move (cut 3gpt from asoka?)

Turn 8
Reasonable place to stop. Need to figure out worker turns and regroup. Trades available are not noteworthy.

Turn 184/460 (1240 AD) [25-Jun-2008 21:13:04]

Nothing eventful happened. Washington has to be viewed as a threat. He's totally pinned in and in danger of getting wiped out. Netted a few hundred gold from some old techs, but fear of "worst enemy" trade plus the bankruptcy of many AI prevented more widespread tech dumping.

We popped a GA? Whaaaa? I guess from NE pollution. I'm gonna let this puppy rot for a bit. Inclination is to bomb him.
I was thinking perhaps of gifting him to Liz for a post war bomb, but whatever :)

It sounds well played (can't check save), but could you be more descriptive about Wash's forces?? Also, we seem to be on the cusp of cautious/annoyed with Salad, Alex, Cathy. Will this be a problem??

I'm really sorry guys. Real life has been hectic the last few months and I just haven't had the time/energy to play lately. I've kept up pretty well up to WT's last playset. If I can be skipped, things will be much better for me after the 1st. Glad to see things are still going well here.

Well done, culdeus, mainly to hold a bit Elec.
I probably have settled the GA, i don't like culture bombs, anyway...

Sabre, nice to see you're not MIA. I'll put you floating in the roster, so you can inform us when you can play a couple TSs before.

Merum i suspected you was in Texas, i'd like to know which is the problem. It doesn't be so big.

Roster
dutchfire - UP for ten turns - try to not be eliminated by Russia (or much likely America)
Sweetacshon - on deck - if he can play
Balthalion
Sabre - floating until news
greatbeyond
WastinTime
Blubmuz - eliminated by Spain, but in another game - vacations 07/01 to 07/09
Merum
culdeus - resting

Good "big fan" on marble, but don't we have another mine to convert before stone?
The culture bomb is way more culture than the settled GA would give (with a small loss of gold/turn which we don't need.) And the culture is immediate, so I like the bomb, especially since it got us cows. Those are +2 with the grocer, right? Very nice decision.

 Did anyone notice the Culture graph!

Looked at the save. I seems the cow is gone already.

We have 5 forests, so we will want to put a windmill on the river/hill. The forest will go into the lab.

Rifle and Steel are available! Get Rifle from Cyrus for Physics. Maybe Steel for Radio soon or wait til someone else has it. Best reasons to just take steel now from Liz are IronWorks can be started and then we can see who has Artill. If no one, then maybe we should get that and Rocketry next. No one ever trades us Rocketry, but we could get Artill free. By getting these and gifting them quickly Apollo can be started.

Got it

Look at Murky's powergraph!

Hopefully some people'll think we're trying for culture

Excellent turnsets from both Merum and culdeus. :goodjob:

@sabre: I know what you mean about real life. Check back when you can.

@ BLubmuz: Nice catch on the Grocer/Supermarket thing -- I missed that.

Looks like we're in good shape. Let's get rifling and cannon in case GW decides to go postal on us again.

Washington is in a bad way. I don't have the screens, but opening the save and you can see how screwed he is. NY down to size 3 and DC down to 7. Thing is he showed a moving stack of 14 guys with 10 rifles and 4 cats or so and NY holds a garrison of another 11 rifles and a mix of other stuff.

Asoka is putting tremendous pressure as is everyone on him. Thing is I wonder if he had to disband his army? What are the carrying costs for a diety ai?

Also LOL at the culture graph. Also jumped up our score quite a bit.

Murky is vastly out in front on the power graph. I wonder what they are up to. Thing is CRC is at the other extreme.

So:
Build research (until we finish Computers?)
Upgrade some units to cannon/rifle/grens? How many, which etc.?
Gift which techs, to whom?
Research Computers - (Stop?) - Refrigeration
What to do about general diplo?

Looks like GW popped a culture bomb of his own in Washington.

I'm just going to float this out there for consideration... How about a quick trip through mass media and build the UN once computers are finished? With our relations, a backdoor diplo isn't outside the realm of possibility, and even if we don't get it, control over the vote would be especially handy for denial and civic manipulation through resolutions.

I thought about this when the GA popped. Would have been 1500 beakers towards MM. I mean we aren't building anything else at the moment and who knows might get lucky.

Plus I hate not being able to build :nuke: pretty much every game I click the "one more turn" and build a nuclear arms program and turn the world to glass. Call me old fashioned, but I loves me some mushroom clouds.

We could be shooting ourselves in the foot with the UN. By activating it, we could end up with someone else running the show. That would be a disaster...losing Bureaucracy. I can't see how the votes could ever work out. I don't think we can "get lucky". The voting is pretty cut and dried, not much if any randomness to their behavior.

We have many turns left and only computers-fission-Refrig-genetics-(maybe)ecology that are "normally" researched by the OCC. There is probably time to take the detour to artillary/Rocketry, but we would need to do it starting next turn if we want to do artill. Maybe just finish computers, then see if we can get Artill free and research Rocketry to give to Liz. Be sure to give steel and rifle to everyone immediately so they will get Artill. These are not techs that we should hang onto. Also, make sure they all have the pre-reqs for Biology so someone gets that soon.
