SGOTM 07 - The Real Ms. Beyond

What's up guys?!

Ruff_hi has mysteriously vanished and it seems the summer holidays seem to have taken hold of the rest of the team. I myself am leaving around 25ish june for a long trip and I'm not able to play then (I'll be able to view and discuss), so it'd be nice to do some playing before that..

Ruff has posted in another thread today afair, so he should be (back) around.

The situation needs us to discuss a bit for the extremly short term then play until next GP (3t at the present configuration) and then have a major discussion.

I don't know if RL is hard for most of us right now (work/school/...) but we started with good debat and are slowly losing the tempo (ok, our situation is not as good as we would have imagined in the beginning and mainly for 'unfair' reasons, but we need to hang on and take a revanche).

Jabah

PS - I will be out of the office (where I posted most of the time) and with no internet connection during the day between the 9th and the 20th. I will still be able to check and post from home every night (but will have seriously less time).

hi - still here. Been following but not much to add. Will try and look at this game later today.

Compromise needs to confirm, but this looks like the roster. I suspect some confusion going on as Ruff_hi didn't post a got it.

because he didn't know he was up. I'm travelling today / tomorrow and time is limited. Can I get a swap?

Hello TheArchduke! Glad you're hopping along.. sounds like a good idea to me. Actually if you feel like you're on track of what's happening, I don't see any reason why you couldn't play the next turn..

I will probably have time to play tomorrow night. I just need some discussion about how to proceed. Here is the current situation:

Firstly, Cyrus will trade optics ...

Also, Cyrus and Asoka (and probably others, only checked these two) will trade maps but want a small amount of our gold (Asoka: 30, Cyrus: 10).

Commentary:
  • I'm a bit disappointed that we didn't finish off the worker I started in my last set - someone mentioned that I should have MM'd to get that worker out before the GLib. In hind sight - definitely true. We need that worker now for infrastructure repair.
  • We are light on the defence side: need to build some defensive units (archers, axes).
  • We have forest near our city - perfect hiding places for invading armies - we should look at which tiles we can chop
  • Do we trade for Optics and go meet the other Civs? I think YES if we aren't gunning for liberalism and NO if we are.
  • Are we gunning for liberalism?
  • I think we should become Jewish and swap our civic to pacifism. Our whole play to date has been GP inspired and we are missing GPPs per turn by remaining religiously neutral.

Suggested Play
  • Builds:
    • Finish Granary
    • Build Worker
    • Build some Axes and Archers
  • Tech:
    • Education
  • Tiles:
    • Max Growth while retaining 2 scientists
  • Trade:
    • Map to Cyrus
    • Optics from Cyrus
  • Religion:
    • Swap to Judaism
  • Civics:
    • Swap to Pacifism
  • Stopping Point:
    • Next GPP, most likely is a scientist that will probably bulb a great chunk of Education for us - IIRC, the number of beakers is related to our city population

Ah! Things are moving again. :)

I would trade to get Optics and start exploring ourselves. We should try to trade world maps around and sell them as well. If no one has the circumnavigation bonus, we could get it by map trading.

With religions... I am somewhat wary of switching religions to incur negative modifiers, but I think that it is necessary at this point if we want to be competitive in this game. I would convert to Judaism and Pacifism + Caste System?

The build order I agree with, except we should get some LBs out there rather than archers.

Good luck! :D

Welcome back Archduke.

I just want to give a quick update of my RL situation. A colleague at work had to take emergency medical leave and three of us have been trying to fill in for him. He's been gone longer than expected and I think it'll still be another couple weeks before I have any free time to do fun things like Civ.

And as soon as I'm able, I'll be back, and this will be the first place I'll put my free time. Until then, I hope the team can continue keeping it moving forward.

Playing Roster:

Compromise (ooa - out of action)
Jabah

We probably need to designate a team captain / nagger / turn order driver while compromose is ooa.

Add possibly a few trade of relatively cheap and well known tech to backward AIs to be able to upgrade a few units.

For trading to gain Optics, Rome wants CS+Philo, which is possibly better than giving Philo to Cyrus (Cyrus is more hated and more advanced iirc).

Jabah

PS - I have very limited access (time wise) until next Monday.

I'm playing this tonight, in about 2 hrs - basic play is outlined above with the following additions ...

- will be careful re trade of philo for liberalism run purposes
- will swap immediately to worker, optimum time for completion of granary is when food bin is 50% full, will try and get max food into hammer overflow to complete granary

- will be careful re trade of philo for liberalism run purposes

Sounds like a plan! Good luck!

rats - didn't get to this. Will d/l the game and play this afternoon during my travels.

quick update:
  • reconfigured city to build worker in 3 turns - thus turning the overflow food into hammers and being able to finish the granary in 1 turn after worker - food stuck at 50% so granary will finish at optimum time
  • swapped to pacifism and caste system
  • swapped to Judaism - no obvious relationship changes
  • traded philo plus 50g to Cyrus for world map and optics
  • swapped maps with Asoka (he threw in 110g)
  • sold our map to Alex for 70g
  • we got the +1 circumnavigation bonus without leaving our front door
  • Kublai came demanding Civil Service - checked his location and his open border situation - ha! he is miles away from us, rejected
  • Alex came offering OBs - no, not at the moment, maybe in a few more years
  • Fred swapped maps - he threw in 70g
  • worker finished, granary in 1 :D
  • we popped an artist - pausing for team input!

[INSERT PROFANITY] THE RNG!

At this point, I would say we should keep it to help bulb Military Tradition.

Good trading Mr. Not-So-Experienced-At-It! :)

The GArtist was a 20% possibility.

GA happens :/

Oh well that's life. Had a look at the save..

-Next GP comes in about 10 turns and it's a possible GS, so we should research education, but not so much that we can't take the max bulb value out of the potential next GS. (does anyone know how many bulbs a GS generates?) At this point winning the liberalism race seems unlikely as asoka very probably beats us (but this needs to be decided upon) so diverting maybe few turns to nationalism right now isn't bad I think.
-We should upgrade our defences with the $$$ we got and build some more next. Also work boats at some point.
-Workers should quarry the marble soon, also the forest east to city could be chopped and a farm built there.
-Agree that GA should bulb mil.trad. We need to trade those older GAtechs before that and it seems that right now Cyrus is our only trading partner, even Asoka is in WFYBTA. We have paper which could be traded for drama but I'm not sure if it's a good trade. Actually maybe we could research it now before the next GP?
-Kublai has 50 gold and we have optics.
-

Yea ruff_hi I think you can continue with this if you have time.. maybe until the next GP pops or so?
