SGOTM 07 - The Real Ms. Beyond

To start with, I have two smokes for this report - very sorry for this.

Turn 171, I set our city up with 2 scientists and stagnate growth. I start building troops and by the end of the set (turn 186) we have 6 cats and 8 musketmen. The downside of this is that we are running -30 gold at 100% science. Turning the science down to 80% balances our bank.

Various people turn up trying to offer me Divine Right for various techs (some throw in gold, some don't). All trades are turned down. Issabella asked for open borders - no.

We teched Liberalism and Scientific Method.

We popped a great artist at about 40% chance. I think that we should flog Liberalism around for gold. There is 990 on offer for that tech alone. That will help us run at 100% science for a while.

The two smokes: I forgot to change civics until turn 181 ... our science jumped to over 400 (up from 275 or so). Really sorry about that. I guess it just cost us some beakers. The other smoke ... I clicked the wrong button when scientific method came up ... I settled the scientist instead of lightbulbing. All I can say to that is that I shouldn't play these critical team games on the train where it is difficult to see the screen sometimes. More lost beakers.

I've set the tech to communism (8 or 9 turns). After that, should we turn science off completely as Asoka has all the techs we could research. Thus amassing a large amount of cash for upgrades?

I think we are only friendly with Asoka now we have the +1 for sharing a defensive pact. If we get one more - modifier for any reason then he will go to pleased and cancel the pact. I think we should go to US to give us a buffer.

We have beakers invested in Democracy - it is only two turns. If we revolt to US, should we also revolt to Free Religion? What religion is Asoka in - if any?

He revolted to Free Religion during your turns!
hmm - better up my smoke counter to 3 then. And, ok, ok, I won't play this game again on the train.

Minor smokes.

The civic changes will have given us earlier boosts, but its probably not too crucial.

I think we meant to settle the GS rather than bulb Scientific Method... since getting to Communism earlier won't do anything without having the necessary 40 turns pass.

Let's just be a little more careful next time ;)

sooooo is up!

I started by changing research to democracy, which was only 1 turn away after I hired an extra scientist.

Next turn I revolt to US and then hire a load of merchants since I figure money could be useful. I'll mainly be building cats and they don't need much production so I fire the miners.

On turn 190 HC declares war on Alexander.

Turn 191 we finally control the furs again.

I decide to build a bank. We have quite enough musketmen and catapults and our settled artists mean a bank would be quite good. Also we can only afford 90% science with the unit cost.

We get a scientist who is settled.

I trade for chemistry from Cyrus (for democracy) so we can build grenadiers.

Sparta is taken by the Incans!

Communism comes in. I sell it to Asoka for 500 gold (he was researching it anyway because he wouldn't give me any techs for it). Still building grenadiers. Research into biology since it's the only tech Asoka doesn't know.

Turn 202 Catherine declares was on Alex who is getting wiped out. Washington gets rifling and upgrades everything.

Incans capture Athens, greece is no more!

And finally on turn 211 we sign a PA!!!!!!!

Asoka's troops in Bombay:

And in Delhi:

Our techs:

I told Asoka to research Biology, it is only 1 turn away now. Nothing else moved.

Time to figure our war plans!

Good work. A very important note when teching in a partnership. I you are researching a tech with a Great Person attached, you must finish the tech to get the GP. By finish, the tech progressbar must read (1) and there must be no black after the light green. This means that when you press enter, your beakers are added to the tech, you finish it and you get the GP.

If there are important wonders attached to the tech and you want to built it (as opposed to your PA), you must let the PA finish the tech. If you finish the tech, your PA gets a chance to build any of the associated wonders. The best way to let the PA finish the tech is to swap away when the counter says (1), your beakers go somewhere else and your PA finishes that tech for you.

It feels absolutely amazing to see ourselves at the top of the score chart. :)

And it looks like its now a space race with Cathy.

Some questions:

Do we want to complete our Factory and Ironworks before continuing with unit production? (Yes [?])

Do we want to make any last civic changes? (No [?])

Do we want to eliminate Washington first or steamroll Tokugawa for target practice? (Tokugawa [?])

Besides the previously mentioned AIs, who else do we want to remove? (Lizzy, Izzy [?])

Tech Order? (Biology, Electricity, Industrialism {for Aluminum}, Rocketry, Radio, Computers [?])

Do we want to shut off research at some point to mass upgrade units? (Yes [?])

Worker Orders? (Lumbermills [?], Connect Oil, Uranium)
**Note: No easily accessible sources of coal for Railroads

I am still around.

Can't look at the save from work.

I would say go after GW first if his defence are not too strong compare to our (mainly Asoka) armies.
edit : but TOku might be better while we are upgrading our troops (what kind of defence is in his city)

Since Asoka research is much higher than ours, I would say run 100% cash for upgrades.

We also should put our navy N of the Iron to pretend we are blocking the path for AIs that want to sneak attack us (since it doesn't cost anything to put them here).

I say Yes to factory and Iron Work (caould we build it if Asoka had it ?)

Workers : lumbermills first (noeed production for factory/IW) then (rail)road uranium/oil.

Jabah

We can't railroad.. no coal

And (IIRC), National Wonders are not affected by a PA partner.

Kyoto is defended by Longbows.

how many coal does our PA have? He will give us one in a few turns. If he only has one, we can steal it short term, rail our tiles and then give it back.

I think:

Build factory but not coal plant or ironworks until Asoka captures a second source of coal. After factory, build military (artillery). We don't want to steal coal until our lumbermills are done and the oil well built.

Don't declare on Toku before GW. If we declare on Toku, Asoka will take Kyoto but will pack troops into the city to prevent it flipping to Izzy. I think we should just attack GW first. We can direct which city he attacks by going to Let's Discuss Something Else. Pack the troops into the furs forest, bombard the defences and then sit tight for Asoka to attack. Maybe retreat after the bombard is done.

Electricity after biology sounds good. Tanks will be excellent.

In terms of mass upgrades, I think only a few muskets to rifles should be necessary. I wouldn't take too long to declare.

Lumbermills are the priority for workers. No pressing need for oil until industrialism.

So Jabah is up and Kodii on deck, right? When are you planning to play Jabah? BTW the deadline is Aug 24th.

When I checked the game, I don't believe Asoka had coal at all, and there isn't a source nearby.

And yes, Jabah is up.

If I am up, I could try to play either tonight or tomorrow. I need to check the save and post some plans if I get some funny ideas, otherwise I could just play following our last instructions:
- biology->electricity
- upgrade some unit when possible
- attack GW first then Toku. (being carefull not to let GW pillage our lands again).

When I checked the game, I don't believe Asoka had coal at all, and there isn't a source nearby.
Oh sorry, that was iron not coal I saw.

I don't think the ironworks is worth the unhealthiness if we only have one of the resources.

In the medium-term we need to get to a stage where we can take on AI armies by ourself. We cannot rely on Asoka to defeat AIs with tech parity like Elizabeth. I'm wondering whether it's worth revolting to theocracy and/or serfdom? I'm expecting with the emphasis on production we won't be hiring many specialists. Serfdom would get our mills build faster but may not be worth the anarchy.
