SGOTM 07 - Unusual Suspects

You missed out 'Anything Goes' although now I'm liking 'Anything Joe's" :~D

I have updated the voting choices. Your vote has been tallied. And as for the hybrid...sorry, no reloads allowed.:nuke:

1.) War declaring
This is so strange. I've been playing that test game at least 5 times the first 50 turns and no one ever declared on me. I have always had just one starting warrior, explored a bit and fortified him in the city. Anyway, let's hope our first neighbors in the real game won't be too aggressive.

Maybe it has something to do with my HOF installation ? I've got Civ IV in c:\games\civilization 4 (rather than the default program files\firaxis\sid meier's civilization 4 ... etc... i had to create that directory to open the saved game file). I could certainly do with some diplomacy hints though!

Anyway I just reloaded at 3000BC and tried a different tact, I missed out on Parthenon for some growth, was looking alright until Spain wiped me out again... reloaded and I tried being a nicer to Spain and then Bismarck declared war (hrmm... so thats 4 civ's in various games killing me!!!) about he didn't have a big first wave assault and after having ravaged lands (and just when I'd almost gotten a road and mine to the Iron) ... it was only by pushing out archers with city defense, barracks and walls could I hold out against the Axe, Spears and Swords. Got a small bit of peace and now Huayna has come after me, but my defenses still hold... now into 175AD and at peace again and almost got a road to my Iron again!

2.) Wonder building
I've never succeeded in getting all three Wonders. I have been ignoring the goody hut nearby on purpose for game comparability every time.

Without the war I would have had it... I also neglected to mention I was chopping as much as possible (I never like having a forest next to my city square for defense/counter-attack).

3.) Cottages?
Never built them, grassland is needed for farms and SSE. We are given a financial leader, but farming is still the why to go

I find without cottages getting any techs past your first dozen is too tricky and I rarely get much leeway for much tech trading... My natural tendancy is to play for research and city building above all else.

One thing we definitely need is to get the mids for the first wonder. So it is a no brainer that we research Masonry first. Also getting the Parthenon is good, but I don't think it will be a game breaker. Literature will be a key tech since we can get the Great Library with it and the National Epic so that we can get massive GPP boost. SO getting Mids Parth and GL are a must for our team, getting the Stonehenge is a luxury that I think we can afford to go without. We these are for those right at the start.

Our ultimate goal for civic is to have these civics. Government :Representation, Well that on is a given. Legal: Bureaucracy. Again that one is a given. Labour: Caste System since we have no need of he others, since we will have built the Globe by then. Economic: Mercantilism, since a free specialist is very handy, Religion: Pacifism. Well this is OCC and you have to be crazy not to go for this civic.

For our name, I will say Unusual suspects sounds like a good name for us.

One of the good things about this gam is that I am playing a OCC team game in a pitboss, so I have learned things from that game t put into practice with this game, but the AI still reacts differently to humans, plus the start is much better than this since you have much more room to grow.

For the names, I don't have a preference so I will abstain and go with what you guys decide.

Diplomacy
How do you get early good diplomacy with the computer? You don't really have anything to trade with them so how do you make them happy? Just curious as I never really get good relations with the computer. The only thing I can think of is we get lucky and get their religion. If we are surrounded by all Aggresive civs that don't research religion how do you get one to make them happy?

Don't think that it matters where you have Civ4 installed. You just load the HOF mod first and then the save I've posted. You also need to have BTS installed or corresponding BTS dll's. I suggest you download the current GOTM and try loading it. Test game I posted will open without this requirements, it isn't protected.

Anyway, we have a problem here with this war declaring. Like I've said, in all games that I played with this save AI leaves me alone. Monty declares on somebody, usually Capac. Izzy founds a religion and spreads it around so we have a lovefest.

We should make more tests with different saves, but with the same starting location. Somebody cares to make a new test game? :nuke:

Important thing is beeling to Alpha and to Literacy. GL is a key wonder. Some WFYBTA appeared in in my game after 10 trades, but there are lot of civs there for trading. Farms are needed later for tons of specialist under pacifism, COL and Representation. Every one of them is like a town producing more towns with GPP.

Well, paying tribute helps when they ask for it. We have two crabs, one goes to tribute for 10 turns. Same religion is very important. We'll really get into trouble if our first neighbors are really mean. But what I think matters the most is the number of spiritual civs on the continent! Just imagine it, lot of different religions crowded on the same continent. Lots of wars and danger.

No, Unusual Suspects got most votes.

I nominate ourselves to be "The Unusual Suspects" but any name is fine by me.

My name-votes go to (in order of preference)
1. Average GI Janes (anything tinged with sarcasm and/or irony is always my favourite :) )
2. Unusual Suspects
3. Anything Goes

NAME:

I suggest each give 3 votes, in priority. First place vote = 4 pts, second place vote = 2pts, third place vote =1pts. Name with most points by midnight tonight wins.

I vote: Average GI Joes (4pts); Other (2pts); and Team 14 (1pts).

Edit to add: In the event of a tie, the shorter name wins. (Never hurts to be nice to organizers)

That would be:

Unusual Suspects: 15
Average GI Joes: 10 (14 if we count in shikhee's Average GI Janes)

Well, this is close!:crazyeye:

Testing, testing....:scan:

It feels to me it comes down to pure luck.

Having some time at the moment, I've made another test game. Tried the same strategy as before. Built Stonehenge, have been building Pyramids and they got built on turn 40 this time in a far away land. On the same turn my first neighbor declared war and game over.

Time for some rest and *cough* strategy revising.

Here is the save, have fun!

I tried your first upload, I finally quit at 1050AD --- My borders were crushed by culture and Hasput had me reigned in and wouldn't go to peace with me. Computer was in industrial age and I had archers.

Early on, I didn't get any wonders, I tried chopping out two workers at the start. Hyan cupac declared war on me shortly after that and I defended again him. By the time he was done with me all the wonders were built and every tile I had improved was destroyed. I have no clue how we are supposed to get this. It appears we have to get some type of wonder early but I don't see how.

This is going to be rough and I believe I'm going to have to leave heavily on you guys for this.

Edit: Your 2nd save is paused --- how do you unpause it?

There are some helpfull readings:

War academy:
# Deity - One City Challenge (OCC) Strategy by Phyacis

There are some important differences with that article: we have very poor food, and a fin/ind leader, not philosophical. Phyacis suggests low tile improvement and almost no wonder building, we'll see.

Permanent Alliance Guide by WastinTime. Some usefull tips from our competiton.:)

The OCC strategy guide is an excellent read. I would encourage everyone to look it over. The methodology seems sound and with our relative inexperience at this challenge, I seriouslly think we should consider it for our strategy. i.e. we don't need an early wonder but we do want the Globe theater asap. We want to cultivate a PA from the beginning etc.

No need to reinvent the wheel...

By my count:

2) Motley Crew 5pts
3) Average GI Janes 4pts
4) Perfect Strangers 2pts
5) Unusual Suspects 11pts
6) Anything Goes 1pt
7) Team 14 7pts
8) Other 3pts

Note, I counted Marconos voting for Anything Goes instead of Unusual Suspects... perhaps I missed an update (or not). Also, shikhee clearly voted for Average GI Janes, not Joes- Now... did he really mean to vote for Pat Buchanen? Was there any hanging chads? Sorry, the supreme court (me) declares this count final.

Deadline is passed.

All hail the Unusual Suspects !!! :goodjob:

They are good articles, and I also recommend them. I read them a few months ago when I tried my first OCC (Monarch level) and have reread them now. Lots of ways to screw it up, but if you stay focused it really works. Should be easier to keep focus in a succession game as long as the team sticks to the same plan. Go Team! Rah rah!

Hit "pause" key! :)

This is in excellent guide, but every game is different. Like I've said:
1.) Low food
2.) Wrong leader

And 3) We do have that stone for The Pyramids.

Burst concept from the article is very important.

I think we can get away with one wonder, The Pyramids.

Bursts:
1) Building Pyramids in 40 turns, while stagnant at size 2
2) Building defense at size 2, let's say walls, barracks, 6 troopers
3) Growth
4) Research (or more troops if AI declares)
....

A few other administrative things we are going t ohave to tackle before we get too far along in the strategy discussion:

Anybody willing to be team captain?

I would recommend that for Team Captain we elect someone who has preferably lots of experience playing SGOTM's and is comfortable playing on Emperor level or above. I am disqualified on both counts.

Anybody want the job? Please nominate yourself then.

After we have the Captain, it will be easier to settle things like who will play turns and in what order, and to provide structure and frame the discussions of both strategy and tactics.

Just my 2 cents.

I'll have you know as soon as the Modern Age rolls around, I'm calling for a recount!

Hit "pause" key! :)

You know, I never even thought about the pause key ... assuming it's the one on your keyboard with the word "pause" on it ;).

I'll read those strats tonight and try another test run. In my test run the computers culture was chewing up my land, it was nasty. I built every building I could find that would generate culture and it wasn't enough to stop the computer from soaking up my land. Heck my capitol even had "We yearn to join the motherland".

As for team leader ... not me, heck I'm still trying to win on Prince difficulty.

After tonights test run hopefully I'll have some better input.
