SGOTM 10 - FuzzyWuzzy Psycho Bunnies

I likes ponies

Under normal conditions, so do I. But in the case, with the terrain like it is and with this small of an island, I prefer swords.

BTW: I'll be out of contact Saturday & Sunday

Here is the save.

550 BC Drop lux to 20%, increase science to 60%, currency in 4 at –10 gpt. Leave York on temple as a library prebuild. MM Hastings for gold, Newcastle and Dover for shields.

IBT Nottingham worker to horse, Hastings horse to sword. Ur completes Temple of Artemis, Barbs start Great Library, barb uprising near Richmond.

530 BC MM Hastings for shields. Lots of worker actions. Retreat workers and Zorro from barb horses. Settler can’t go to white dot, as that is where the barbs are. Byzantine and Inca have currency. They want 127 g for it, it would cost us 120 g to research it, so I buy it. We will lose money at Richmond anyway. The Byzantines have monotheism. Start lit – 4 turns at –13 gpt.

IBT Barbs move. London settler to settler. Warwick worker to barracks. Dover flips to Inca.

510 BC Retreat from barbs. Increase lux to 30%.

IBT Richmond is ransacked, lose about 60 g. Liverpool worker to harbor. Sumerians land by Richmond.

490 BC Drop lux to 20%. Sink barb galley. Lit in 2.

IBT Barb activity. Sumeria builds town on our peninsula. Inca start Hanging Gardens.

470 BC Worker actions

IBT Learn lit, start feudalism. Byzantines and Sumerians start Hanging Gardens. Oxford barracks to horse.

450 BC Lux to 30%, sci to 20%. Can’t sell lit for much of anything.

IBT Brighton worker to worker, Norwich worker to harbor. Maya start Hanging Gardens.

430 BC Build Exeter and Cambridge, both start harbors. Disperse barb camp. Science to 30%.

IBT London settler to settler, Hastings sword to horse, Birmingham worker to harbor.

410 BC Worker moves.

IBT Nottingham horse to horse, Warwick barracks to settler, Newcastle granary to settler.

390 BC Worker moves

IBT Coventry barracks to sword

370 BC Worker moves

IBT ---

350 BC Worker moves.

I haven’t sold lit because we haven’t been able to get much for it. However, we might want to sell it even for not-so-much to get the research rates of our neighbors who are not immediate targets to increase.

The Sumerians are going to cause culture problems. We need to build some of our own, get them to education quickly, or take over Ur pretty soon.

WRT to the Chasqui scouts. They do not have more than one movement point, it is just that they treat all terrain as road. They are basically half of a Conquistador in that aspect. So Horsies are still good against them.

From the review of the Inca by Ision and verified in Civlopedia:

Chasqui Scout, a 1-1-2, scout class unit with the ability to treat hills and mountains as regular terrain. Unlike a regular scout, the Chasqui has the ability to attack and defend, this increases their survivability from barb attack over long stretches of exploring

This is also a bump as we've fallen into the SGOTM 9 depths of posts.

Who's up?

What's the current status?

My memory has a hazy recollection of building a strike force to conquer the Inca and capture the Pyramids. At this point we seem to be wavering between a sword or horse based military. Research is on Feudalism, though I think Engineering or Theology would have been a better choice (Are there many beakers towards Feudalism so far?) There was just a barbarian explosion, any SOD of barbarians to worry about?

You are correct. Even still they would not be defending with them because they are low defence and they would still be attacking with spears and thus the retreat value of horsies is still a good option, but who knows, we might be the first to Knights and thus we will avoid this issue all together.

Here is the order and who is up now.

OK I just got back in town. I will play it tonight.

I think that theology would have been a much better choice than feudalism, but we don't have monotheism and can't afford to buy it. I picked feudalism over engineering because I've never had any luck trading with engineering, but we don't have that many beakers invested yet. Our troop support is killing our research rate.

There aren't any barbs that we know about. There was one camp nearby, it spawned 8 horses, and they took some gold from us, but it is gone now.

While I did build one sword, I think we've pretty much decided to go with horses. They need to be collected together and sent out pretty quickly, to either die or get us some more cities before their support costs kill us completely.

There are still some cities to settle and lots of jungle to clear, but we are reaching the end of easy expansion.

I started out last night and but got derailed so I'll finish tonight.

It didn't seem like there was a lot of space to settle and London would've grown to size 7 if I finished a settler there so I changed to rax. I also cut a deal for dyes and 111g for lit with the Byz. They have a harbor which can't be cut off so the trade route is safe. This also allowed us to lower lux to 10%. The gold will allow me to upgrade two vet warriors. My plan was to have a stack sent to the mountains of Cuzco. Cuzco also has spices so that will be a big help along with the pyramids. I hope to be ready by the middle of my turns.

@CKS were you planning to plant the jungle settler on the spot or move it one more south?

We have 5 turns of research in on feud so I think we should continue. Why are the barbs building the Glib? Don't they already have their own? :crazyeye:

If we've got 5 turns on Feudalism, then let's complete it. For some reason I thought we acquired Monotheism for Republic :crazyeye: My reasoning on Engineering was that we can be pretty sure that the AI will prioritize Feudalism (a government, a unit and a wonder) and we might be able to get a monopoly on Engineering. As for battle plans, we need to make sure we strike before Feudalism is available to the Inca. Horsie-Kabobs are not a pretty sight once he has pikes. Is there any AI without Iron or Horses?

I'd been planning on putting the settler either one step south or one step southeast of where it is. We also need a settler for south of Norwich on the grass and another for the other side of the volcano just east of this settler, and there are two more possibilities along the west coast.

Good deal on finally getting a decent trade for lit. During my turns the best I ever had was about 130 g total from all the AI combined.

I don't think that Technology Thieves acts much like the Great Library. Even if it does, though, why shouldn't the barbs build it to keep everyone else from it?

The Mayans and the Dutch had no iron at the end of my turns. The Incans do have it hooked up, but it is right on the edge of their territory, and we can pillage it easily.

The Mayans, the Byzantines, and the Dutch had no horses then.

I don't mind the Barbarians getting the Great Library, but I would like to have the local AI build us Sun Tzu and Bach. Combine those two with the Pyramids and we've got the most important wonders before the end of the Middle Ages.

As for research, I'm thinking we need to concentrate on the top tier to get to Astronomy ASAP. A couple of scouting Caravels will be able to help us get a better feel for what's in front of us.

I will start the war on my turns.
As CKS said the iron is on the Incan outskirts and a reg spear in the city. They have horses but the AI isn't the greatest skirmisher in the world.

Preturn: Switch London from settler to rax since it won't finish the settler in time. Trade lit for dyes and 111g from Theodora. Upgrade two vet warriors and shift down lux to 20% and science up to 40% Feud from 18 to 15 at -1gpt with 40g in the bank. MM for growth in the core.

IT Liverpool Cat--> cat
330 Research to 13 on feud and gpt to +8. MM to +10gpt and hire two scientists for happiness and feud to 12.
Reading is running high as a flip. Short rush a worker for 8g back to sword at Coventry.

IT York lib -->horse Warwick Horse--> horse Oxford horse --> horse. Maya start Glib
310 Demand Pachy to leave. He agrees. Dang. It moves a spear/settler away.

IT warrior moves towards Sumeria and spear/settler heads east of volcano. London Rax --> horse Hastings Horse--> settler Coventry flips. FFFF! Horses, 2 swords and a cat too. This can't stand. Cuzco is too strong culturally.
290 Declare on Incans. At Dover lose a horse without a dent and promote a spear. 2nd loses taking 2hps off. 3rd takes a reg spear flawlessly.

IT Incan sword pops out of Incan iron city.
270 Lose 2 more horses at Coventry but take the city back with a horse and sword but finish with a horse. At Dover take a spear but lose a sword. Take a slave. Get feud to 5 at 60%.

IT horses coming.
250 Take back Dover with a horse.

IT Horse hits a fortified warrior and wins. Another horse hits our archer on a mountain and loses. Newcastle rax -->horse Brighton worker --> worker Reading Temple --> worker
230 Retreat the horse. Fortunately there are a lot of horses finishing next. I'll need them. Byz get feud. Crap. Turn research down and will get it next.

IT Redlined horse hits our redlined archer. Feud comes in to mono. London horse-->MI York horse--MI Warwick Horse-->Lib Oxford horse--> lib Resistance ends in Dover. Birmingham worker--> worker
210 Move horses to Leeds so they can use the mountain towards Cuzco.
Trade Sumerians Feud for mono and 66g. Start on theo.

IT 2 archers and a horse appear on a hill at Leeds. Leeds rax --> worker We are deposed at Reading. Wt...f. There goes our wines. Richmond harbor--> cat
190 Take horse and both archers out.

IT Hastings horse--> lib
170 Short rush a pike for 40 back to lib at Oxford cuts off 2 turns.

IT another archer appears at Leeds
150 4 horses and a MI are on the mountain at Leeds and 2 more are in the city awaiting orders.
Satelite view...

Summary
Some horrid RNG early and 2 flips. Pretty rough. Once we get Cuzco we'll have spices which will help but the culture pressure from the nearby capitals is brutal.

The save

Good deal on getting the war started. There isn't much we can do about bad luck in battle, but we've got to do something about our culture. Removing the Inca will help, as will building some libraries. Sumeria is going to be a problem, as they have the Temple of Artemis. If we take Tiwanaku we'll have wines again, though, and we won't miss Reading as much.

Losing two swords and a cat to the Coventry flip was a pain but I think we're in decent shape to take the Incans down.

I left all the units near Leeds with movement for Cuzco. There are 6 horses and a MI that can be ready next turn or 4 horses this turn. It looks like the Cuzco is without rax so hopefully there's only 4 spears in the capital.
I'm sure Goz will figure something out.

The placement of the AI capital's to our cities is not helping the culture situation.

Once we have conquered the Incans, we need to build up some culture because we are being killed in that way and thus we will continue to lose cities that we have gained. Here is the order as it stands.

I'll probably need a swap with someone if my turn comes up Friday to Sunday.

Once we start adding libraries & universities our culture will improve. I've got the feeling that once we get our military rolling, it will be our choice on when to stop.

A couple of questions for the team:

1. If we get an MGL, what's the best usage? FP or Army (I prefer army with #1 and FP with #2)
2. Where is the best place for the FP? (I prefer Cuzco)
3. Once the Inca are toast, who's next? (I prefer Dutch unless he gets his Swiss Mercs on the board then the Mayans)
4. What to research after Theology? (My choice Education to Astronomy)
5. Should we try to build any wonders? (Let the AI build them for us)

I agree with this.

Cuzco will be a powerhouse.

I would suggest the Sumerians. They are giving us huge culture pressure, have our wines and another lux IIRC plus they have ToA. I don't think the Dutch are a factor and are too far away. IIRC they don't have much in the way of resources (no iron?). The Byz should be our research partner.

Agreed.

The only one I could see a huge benefit from is Leo's. We'll need to upgrade a lot of our units when we prepare for the Barbs.
