SGOTM 10 - One Short Straw

Well we're all in agreement for this turn so I'll be hitting enter tonight  We do need to map out the next 20-30 turns for city/empire development though, assuming nothing weird happens on the Gandhi front.

I settled St. P and moved the units as discussed. I did not hit enter as we need to decide what to do about the specialists. I'm inclined to forego engineers in both cities so that we can pop GS faster. I don't think we have any need to adopt caste anytime soon, so our scientists will only come from a library.

Here's the land:

From the looks, I think we can fogbust with our current units. There is a river to the SW of Moscow that we should try to grab before Gandhi if at all possible.

Good turn!
I think we should be as agressive as we can settling wise, and cut the peninsula from him with our third city. Need more scouting, but it would allow a quicker war. Ideal situation would be that the river ends near Gandhi border.

The only problem of going settler earlier is that it sets our library back. So I would still stick with workers (cop out 2 more) then library for moscow, and WB WB library for St. P. Or we can try swapping one of the worker builds for a settler. The only thing is, renaissance settlers cost a lot of hammers...

I was more thinking at the placement of the third city... not the timing... let's keep as per the plan for now ;)

Agree on engineers... Caste isn't just good for GP's, though. With Merc, it's a free border pop for new cities, which is nice with Gandhi so close. And free merchants can cover some of the rex cost...

they will if they haven't metals (though I guess you were asking for the first two, so go check yeah )

They start with four LB's.

I think we only need to generate GP's in St Petersburg allowing us run an engineer in the capital. With 3 workers + serfdom we will run out of improvements to make in the not too distant future so we can easily convert to caste system later.

I think this will leave us far too few military units to choke Gandi. After the workers/W.B's I would build a few more longbows, and then probably a 3rd settler in the capital even before a library. Blocking Gandi early should enable us to get far more beakers in the long run than an early library.

If we're going to run an engineer in Moscow, then it won't need a library as soon. But we don't want to put it off too much since it'll run two gold mines.

So how is this tentative plan (good for 8 turns) :

Moscow: worker -- worker (with a warrior build tossed in while waiting for chops)
St. P: WB -- WB

Explorer continues to hug coast, northern LB fogbusts the north, and southern LB heads west towards Gandhi?

Or do we want to stay with only 3 workers? If we're going to break out longbows early, I'd prefer to go 4 workers so that we can chop out a LB or two.

x-post with Soirana.

Ok, I'll stay with 3 workers. So next turn, we get a second worker. One goes to farm the corn, another goes to chop the tile 1W of Moscow. Moscow builds a warrior until the chop completes, then swaps to a worker to complete the worker. St. P builds workboats, working the highest hammer yield tile (I think the ivory tile). Moscow runs an engineer, St. P runs a citizen.

Serfdom to build workshops before switching to caste sounds good.

sounds good to me, though St Pet. will be working unimproved tiles for a while :( (size 1, then one size 2 + clam...) so maybe another worker in St pet after the WBs, and a LB in Moscow after warrior <-> worker, or do we go directly for library after wbs in St. Pet? (sorry if it's obvious, I still haven't read all the pages of discussion I missed)

St. P really needs 2 workers on its own to keep up with its growth. Clam + crab through a lighthouse = 2 five food tiles. Plus the FP makes it grow very fast. We can try to get by with 3 workers but it'll be tight...

I usually played with switch. Mostly making workshops under serfdom and working them under caste is rather profitable:lol:
Without workshops we might run out of good tiles while building library and longbows.

Yes, of course. I knew there was a reason I liked Caste, just couldn't remember it.:D

[Currently I spend most time working than drinking to forget work than sleeping to get out of drunk... luckily i can squeeze some internet action between drinks...]

That's me exactly.:mischief: I can barely keep my eyes open at the moment...

Coolness.

That's pretty much the micro I had done when I played my test runs.

Do we want to chop out a library in St. P once the workers are free?

Ok, I started playing some turns as discussed (Moscow worker, St. P WB, continue scouting, Eng in Moscow and citizen in St. P). Until I get this:

So.... What do we do?
