SGOTM 10 - One Short Straw

Just some more thoughts. So we can declare and move the LB onto the FP, keeping him from heading in that direction. We can move the explorer up to block potential city sites as well and try to get him to put city #2 to the west. Of course we'll have to recall our LB if we take this route. Gandhi put out the first offensive unit after about 20 turns. Oddly enough, he'll take peace for almost free (actually he offered his map for peace even though I killed 0 troops and built 0 troops).

Do we agree on this team? I like that idea at least :hammer:

I would only support this if we are sure it will stop him settling to the East, otherwise an immediate war probably would not achieve anything worthwhile.

Well, I finally got in 15 mins playing time this morning, and I prevented the second city. Cheating a little bit, though (moved units one extra turn and sent north LB down right away). I think we need to know as much about the map as possible. If we can get his map, we should. If he has nowhere else to go, it might just work.

Here's Gandhi's map:

So it's likely that he will settle either 1S or 1SE of where his settler currently is. If we declare and move the LB onto the FP, we should at least be able to keep him away from the horses. Not sure if it's worth it though :( This map is annoying

At least we know that it wouldn't have helped to try blocking Gandhi by settling on the ivory.

I'm missing something. I tried doing a new test map, but I can't exactly replicate it. Gandhi keeps founding Bombay on top of the iron NW of Delhi, regardless of where I place his starting units... Why did he have to come our way in the actual game??? This map IS bloody annoying.

Our units haven't moved yet this turn, correct? I'm thinking we might need to go to the FP with the LB and declare. I'm hoping this forces him to pull the settler back.

On the larger scale, if we do choke Gandhi immediately, we'll really need some fogbusting... If the island in the north is useful, we might need to get out a galley with an LB or two there early to prevent barb spawn... Anyway, we probably need a lot more military production early than we initially anticipated.

BTW, I wanna belatedly thank Soirana for convincing us to settle StP at the ivory. We'd be majorly screwed if we went for the fish...

Indeed, St. P is in a great spot given how close Gandhi is.

I think if we declare, Gandhi will settle on the western FP. At least it'll leave space for our own cities to the east later. If he does proceed to settle Bombay, we can just take peace ASAP. We'll get a diplo demerit but Gandhi won't like us long-term anyways so I don't think it's much of a loss. He won't trade unless we're friendly (assuming no other civs).

The explorer in the south is the only unit that's moved this turn.

If we declare war on Gandhi I favour waiting until we can steal a worker as it doesn't look like we will gain anything from declaring immediately.

The land to the West looks pretty poor, it may be better to leave it to the barbs/Gadhi rather than put the effort into fogbusting it ourselves.

I did another test map, trying to replicate the actual game. I removed the iron and wheat until Gandhi started moving SE, then worldbuildered them back in.

I tried: south LB 1SW (FP) - DOW. The result is that he pulls back his settler to the tundra 1S of wheat (see attached). It's a repeatable result with my test map. I'm sure something small could be different in the actual game and produce a different result. With shyuhe's original test map the other day, I managed to prevent the second city altogether. I think the reason behind the settler pull-back is that the PH he's on would have too much overlap with Delhi, and he won't move past our LB once in war. I hope so, anyway... The other map probably didn't have a viable alternate site (wheat/fur in this case).

If we could somehow confirm that this is consistent behaviour, I'm in favour of pushing him away from FP's and cow, then making peace temporarily, then dow-ing again to steal a couple of workers in 10t.

Yeah, I just noticed the desert thing. Dumb. I'll fix it and replay...

I am wondering the same thing. I think Gyathar might have specifically revealed tiles to get him moving in that direction, so we might be hard pressed to replicate the exact same conditions.

Another thing to note is that his borders pop rather quickly, and he's positioned in such a way that getting a LB next to a worker might be tough...

Edit: I'm an idiot. Please ignore me. It was the desert thing... He does settle immediately on the PH... We should just let him go, and declare when we can steal a worker a bit later.
