SGOTM 10 - England vs the Barbarians.

The Civ3 Barbarians have looked with envious eyes on their Civ4 cousins who have been granted new powers to build cities, research techs and build wonders.. so they have decided to do the same. You, in the guise of Elizabeth of England (currently celebrating your 80th birthday), will take up the challenge of cutting them back down to size.

This game will be played in Civ3 Conquests only, by as many teams as we can muster. The winner will be the team that destroys the barbarian nation by the earliest game date. All victory conditions are enabled.

The information required to place you in a suitable team is as follows:-

1. Which level (regent, monarch, etc.) are you comfortable playing in a solo game?
2. Are you new to SGOTM?
3. Do you have any preferences as to which team you join?

The game will start on May 7. Thanks again to Gyathaar for the concept and map.

Here's the start.

Map Parameters
Playable Civ - England
Opponents - Six: Mayans, Byzantines, Dutch, Inca, Sumerians, Barbarians.
World size - Standard
Difficulty - Emperor
Landform - Mystery
Barbarians - Non-standard

The map is handbuilt, and therefore may not have a standard configuration.

Game mods:
The game uses the default rules as defined in the SGOTM Reference Thread, with the following modifications:

- Galleys can never enter ocean tiles.
- There are some unusual advanced/modified Barbarian units.
- The Barbarians have research capabilities, and can build cities and wonders.

The SGOTM Mediterranean resources are included, as you can see from the starting screenshot. If you have played SGOTM 9 then you will be ready. Other players may need to download and unzip a small graphics mod pack linked in the Reference thread.

Please visit the following links to ensure that you are adequately prepared, skipping references to PtW or Vanilla versions of Civ3.

Notes:

A. ONLY Conquests version 1.22 (C3C) is supported for this SGOTM. All teams will compete for a single award set:
The Crimson Laurels:

... and the Wooden Spoons
woodenspoon10.gif

B. All teams must play the sponsored variant - victory will be awarded for the fastest destruction of the Barbarian Nation.

C. All saved game files uploaded to the server are parsed through software that extracts and archives data about your save, including reload count for each turn set.

D. Spoiler information will absolutely NOT be tolerated in this thread.

I look forward to seeing you exercise your creativity in this game. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. May the best team win :D

Groan..guess that leaves me out unless someone wants to buy me Conquests. My finacial advisor (wife) has limited my civ purchases to PTW. :(

Have fun all.

wow, such a good starting position! :) 5 bonus tiles within the capital area!
will AI fight against the barbarian nation also?

1. Monarch/Emperor
2. No
3. Any team that will have me.

It seems to have been a good decision spending €10 on eBay for Civ III Deluxe. :)

What I lack however is any conquests experience. :(

1. Demi-God?
2. No.
3. I don't know whether the team will re-vitalize from its current state...

Great! Space dumbo's end is near :D

1. Deity (with a good start  )
2. no
3. Although I liked playing in my team Jeffelammar in SGotm 9, I'd love to have some European / Asian company for more discussion during work hours (while america is sleeping)

Looking forward to that one. :)

I already feared that no SGOTM would be started. Thanks Gyathaar and Alanh. :worship:

1) Demigod
2) No
3) Team Hagar preferred. (new name has to be found though :twitch: )

Sign me up, please.

1. Deity in Vanilla. Dunno about C3C.
2. No.
3. Team Smurkz!

CF, sorry to see you leave. But C3C should be rather cheap these days...

I'm in. Sounds like a cool variant, and one that should (hopefully) play a bit quicker than the two last marathons. :)

1. Can't honestly say Emperor any more, so even though I've never played higher I'll say (PtW) Deity. Very little previous experience of C3C.
2. No
3. Team Smurkz all the way, though we'll be looking for a few new recruits it seems.

@CF: I found Conquests on Amazon from $14.50 used, $18.99 new. But then again, maybe your financial advisor isn't primarily concerned about the price... In any case, it would be great to have you around for another round, if possible.

Are the barb units in the civilopedia, or is it supposed to be a surprise?
Kind of... You can see their stats there, but I used text descriptions of other units so you would not have to download a special mod just for that.

I wonder a bit about those barbies. They can research and build cities - can they capture cities too? And will there be (possibly non-aligned) barbarians in huts too? Goodie huts?

I'm in :)
1) Emperor
2) :nope:
3) If there's going to be something built on the remains of Peanuts, I'd love that one. If not, then some other nice bunch.

edit: Do we lose if an AI civ kills of the barbs?

They are basically another civ with special abilities (units, buildings, government, tech)
They can capture cities yes.

There are goodie huts too, and they can pop normal stupid barbs.
