SGOTM 11 - ChokoMisfits

Hope you enjoy(ed) your concert. I'm totally out of music these days. Last concert I went to was a group called the Buzzcocks earlier this year. I first saw them in 1977(8). At least my tastes don't seem to have changed much. :)

Okay team, I have my plan and assuming I am not dead tired when I get back from my bro-in-law's concert tonight (he is a drummer), I'll be playing per the turnset

One thing that was not specified. Do you guys want me to play nice with Yara or evil? Other rivals?

If we are thinking of a future dow, being slightly mean now might help Yara dow us later, saving us a dow.

Lemme know!

What can Zara actually demand at the moment? He can't ask for a technology, as we don't have Alphabet. He can't ask us to switch to his favourite Civic, as we don't have Theology. If he demands our spare Corn, we simply say no.

A slight watchout is that Zara has a 10% chance of DoWing from Pleased.

If we meet someone else, take note of whether either the new person or Zara happense to have a Worst Enemy.

Good luck with the turnset, and Alive by Pearl Jam just started playing on my iPod shuffle - perfect timing!!

Of Import that we did not discuss. We can sign OB with Yara. Should we?

We should if we want Yara to be building to friendly.

We shouldn't if we want otherwise.

Regardless, I should make this decision NOW before my turnset.

I would tend to think that right now Yara is best used as an ally. He can watch our flank.

Ergo, I would sign.

Thoughts?

I am in favor of Open Borders with Zara Yaqob in the current turn. In other words, Open Borders now with Zara Yaqob now before ending the current turn. I would also promote our Warrior (to Combat 1) with a pending promotion immediately before ending the current turn.

From previous comments on the topic of Open Borders with Zara Yaqob, I believe that a majority is in favor of Open Borders now.

Dude, that's when I was born. You're old!

It depends if you mean actual age or maturity age. Being 47 one is about 30 + years different to the other. :)

@Ozbenno

Yep I saw the Buzzcocks 3 times back in the 70s. Although a lot older the sound was the same last time as well. Also just seen the Stranglers, old but great as well. Guess you can see what my early influences were.

Back to the game. No problem with opening borders with Zara but we should be prepared to close them if he tries to settle behind us. Hopefully he has some land to his East across the sea he could settle instead.

OB with Zara may give him TR income with us from Sailing, while we do not get a TR yet. But I think longer term this is still a good idea -- Zara will become friendly over time and will serve as a "safe" trade partner. OB will also allow us to check what is to Zara's east, which could be useful information.

If we do end up fighting him, it will probably be due to border pressure -diplo. Thanks to ianw1610 for the note about 10% DOW chance at pleased -- very important info! We must keep a careful eye on Zara, and not tempt him with uncovered workers or weakly defended cities.

Off topic: about 2000 BC in a personal game, just ran into Monty. :( Why does this guy always seem to start close by when I am thinking about peaceful victory conditions? :hammer2:

Weighing up the options, I'd say yes to OB with Zara.

As Mighty Dwaarf is still away on honeymoon, and McArine's computer is broken, it looks like Jericho's turnset will be the last of this rotation, so after this we will return to haphazard1...

Turn 0
Promoted our wounded warrior to C1
OB with Yara
Trade surplus Corn for Cow with Yara (diplo purposes)

Turn 1
Move Warriors that are free towards Yara
Move workers to Prechop

...Interlude...

Turn 7
Monument Whipped
Stonehenge Built somewhere by someone we don't know
Library Whipped, 3 POP lost

Turn 8
StoneWheat starts Granary
See some barbarians, Scary!
Fast Growth in capital, prechopping and pre-mining

Note: Because of open borders with Yara, I made a tactical decision to get the monument out ASAP, as culture discourages settling.

I stopped here because, while we had discussed this if the opportunity occured, it actually hadn't

We have a warrior on Yara's border next to a worker. We can worker-steal. There is an archer nearby that would follow, but our military strength is otherwise equal to yara. There are two barbarian warriors currently spawned on the map

TO steal in 2075 or not to steal, that is the question.

Thoughts? I'm hitting the road for 3 hours so I'll be away, finishing up today or tonight after feedback

My view would be NOT to Worker steal from Zara at this point.

The game conditions require that we need to be in possession of 4 specific Resources, and at present we neither possess, nor have identified the location of, any of these 4.

Therefore I'd save our 2 available DoWs until later in the game, in case we need them to obtain 2 or more of those 4 Resources, from overseas...

Highlights
Warrior survived a barb attack in the open. Yay! Medic Warrior.

Yara is BOXED IN by us. Must know someone beyond the water.
He is so nice he gave us clams! whatta guy!

Zara got buddhism, obviously from a sea route.

Can't grow when we get to 1 turn before 6 pop due to happiness, so I start a settler. We have enough warriors

Saved and exited on the turn before we get the GS. CowWheat borders are popping

We have 5 warriors, a settler with 3 turns build in our capital.

Yara has 1 city, hasnt grown in awhile. So he is building a settler. Save uploaded, more later.

I gotta prep for a bbq!

Interesting that Zara is boxed in, but has contact. I will have to look at the save, see what can be seen. Is there a clear path across the water, or does Zara have a culture bridge we can not match?

Buddhism spreading to Zara is good, hopefully it will spread to us. The more religions the better, at least for now.

If our capital is happy limited, grow to size 6 and then whip the settler. Probably faster than building it turn by turn. I will check once I have time to open the save.

OK, from ianw1610's post it sounds like I will be up. I will look at the save later today and post a plan, aiming to play probably Monday evening. Due to a big push at work I will spend most of Sunday in the office. :(

Turnset sounds good, JH! I agree on not making a worker steal against Zara. We need to conserve our liimited DOWs.

Only 6 more GPPs to get our Scientist, so just the 1 Science specialist needed this turn, right?

I note from the Score graph on the progress page that we have the lowest score of any team at this stage... presumably the other teams have a 3rd City by now, or maybe they did not switch to 0% research and have more Techs...

Do we want to aim for the Oracle? If so, we will need to push our Research in that direction...
